Top Ten Amps of all time

Recommended Posts

Art Dudley, now of venerable Stereophile magazine and whose opinion on things like horns & tubes I respect in no way measurable, lists the ten greatest amplifiers of all that he listened to repeatedly, on page 51 of the September 2004 issue:

1. Naim Nap250 (oldest)

2. Fi 2A3 (sets the bar for SETs)

3. Conrd-Johnson Priemer One (first real superamp)

4. EAR 509 (me-pretty too!)

5. Audio Note Ongaku (terrifying level of purity)

6. Rankin (Wavelength) Baby Ongaku (DIY 2A3?)

7. Quad II (Ive heard these with classic Klipsch corner Khorns- as powerful as they look!)

8. Krell KSA-50 (80s)

9. DNM PA3S

10. Lamm ML2.1

That list is totaly useless unless we know what speakers he prefures , all those above mentioned amps could sound like crap or like gold depending on ones music and speaker choice.

The audio hobby is all about building a complete " COMPONENT MATCHING " system that matchs your listening habits and enviroment . All the this is better then that comparisions are BS and serves no usefull purpose to me.

A $50 radio shack reciever can and will sound like a million bucks on a pair of klipschorns compared to a $50,000.00 krell run through a pair of $35 candle speakers.

I like Mark's list.

Art Dudley's list is bizarre.

i have never heard the NAIM; but would add it to the list based upon length of reputation.

Some in order of the age I heard them

-Phase linear

-HK 730

-Scott LK-48 (NOS Valves)

-Scott 296

-Dynaco Mark

-VRDs
