itsawomanthing
Ok we've been through just about every other part of a band - let's try drummers. This is a favorite for me since I am an ex-drummer. Who do you think was/is the greatest drummer of all time - a master of percussion. My top 3 favorites are (in no particular order) 1. Ginger Baker - Graham Bond Org, Cream, Air Force, etc. 2. Graeme Edge - Moody Blues, Graeme Edge Band 3. Paul Thompson - Roxy Music, Concrete Blonde there are others, these are just the first off the top of my head.

jheis
Not Buddy Rich - or Phil Collins for that matter. Two sides of a very obnoxious coin.
grog
That would be my top three pick as well. I did put them in order. 1. Ginger Baker - Graham Bond Org, Cream, Air Force, etc. 2. Paul Thompson - Roxy Music, Concrete Blonde 3. Graeme Edge - Moody Blues, Graeme Edge Band Greg Ok we've been through just about every other part of a band - let's try drummers. lovedrummin
My favorites: 1. Buddy Rich 2. Carl Palmer 3. Ginger Baker 4. Bernard "Pretty" Purdie (Numerous sessions: Aretha Franklin, Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, on & on) 5. Ringo Starr Buddy Rich was obnoxious, but also a great talent on drums. Ringo though not a technically great drummer, was the one who inspired me and many others in the early '60s to play drums.
Allan Songer
In no particular order-- Jo Jones Elvin Jones Kenny Clarke Max Roach Art Blakey Philly Joe Jones Art Taylor Frank Butler (my personal favorite) Tony Williams Tootie Heath Billy Higgins Shelly Manne Gene Krupa Jimmy Cobb Roy Haynes Louis Hayes Joe Morello But NOT NOT NOT buddy rich

ben.
I get you, Gary. Cool. I'll modify the topic by limiting it to drummers I've played with. Chris Smith. Followed closely by Jeff Mercel, with whom I experienced the most artistically creative 5 minutes of my life.
Allan Songer
Oh, if we're gonna narrow it down THAT way, I guess Joe Bowen. He was in a band called "Waitin on Joe" and lived next door to me in San Francisco in 1979. B*stard used to wake us up at 4 AM banging away stoned out of his mind. He was late to almost every gig--thus the name of the band. But he was a really nice guy and his wife Tess was perhaps the most beautiful woman I have ever known--and the most patient as well. She was a sculptor who liked to use cat skulls in her work. Got them down at SF Animal Control by sweet-talking some guy who gave her dead cats. Wonder where they are today? boomac
Thank you Gary but Im more of a guy who happens to hit the drums once in a while. Calling me "a drummer" is a stretch. Allan has it right, (as usual) but for some reason, he forgets Mickey Roker , Grady Tate and Art Taylor. I like his favorite, Frank Butler, for his great solo prowess but all those guys were fantastic in their own right. How about Donnie Richmond ? After only six months on the drums he was playin with Charles Mingus and Lordy, the dude could fly. Check out Mingus, Ah Um. Too tough to pick a favorite but Tony and the Joness are right up there! garymd
You're still my favorite drummer Scott.[] I've always been a Carl Palmer fan but I think you have to categorize drummers while picking favorites. I just don't think you can compare jazz drummers to rock drummers.
sputnik
I'll mention Pete Best again for missing out on the biggest opportunity of all time. Wasn't he thought to be a better drummer than Ringo too?
SteelerFan
I don't know anything about what would make a drummer the best...but I know my favorite was John Bonham[]

aviserated
I am no drummer but verygood drummers can give you a better idea of who they think is the most imaginative and fastest drummer combined? Eric Clapton thought he was good at guitar until he heard Stevie Ray Vaughn play.
