Don't know the tune, but looks like something Tenessee Ernie Williams did. Okay, who knows what song TEW did that was copied by a classic rock band?

You're close with the artist, but not quite on the money, and the cover band is more contemporary than classic.

Looks like the tune was done by a band who also did an old Merle Travis tune.

Not that I know of, but they do regularly cover a Bob Dylan song that

most people know better as a Jimi Hendrix song, and that cover appears

on the same concert CD and DVD as the Johnny Cash tune referenced here

Seems as thought I've heard those lyrics before. I'll be interested to see what the song is.

So lemme get the rules straigh. If someone gives these lyrics,

and I think it is this song, can I look up the lyrics to this song and

see if the given lyrics are in fact in the song I think it is?

And will that disqualify me? I think it shouldn't, as you're

still going on memory and experience when you're trying to decide what

the song is.

Oops. I re-read the first post. It's supposed to be classic

rock stuff, and since neither Dave Matthews nor Johnny Cash is

generally considered that, I'll give it up and post a new new

one. It's called "Long Black Veil," first recorded by Johnny Cash

in 1964 and very well done by The Dave Matthews Band on their "Listener

Supported" album.

Maybe this is closer to what you have in mind:

You're right, but I was able to identify the song with certainty. I fashioned this rule to keep people from disputing answers when it's clear the person knows the tune. Good to know the name, though. I knew it was the first tune on Hemispheres.
