Max, we're talking 1978, hardly current, how OLD are you anyway? Grammatically disasterous- LOL

Ok, I think I got that last one. Here's one for ya Max, I must insist that the wording be correct in the title.

Brezhnev took Afghanistan.

Begin took Beirut.

Galtieri took the Union Jack.

And Maggie, over lunch one day,

Took a cruiser with all hands.

Apparently, to make him give it back

Feeling good, feeling right

it's Saturday Night

The hotel detective he was outa sight

We're an American Band by Grand Funk

Ray, shame on you, that was a gimme for Max!

Here's another one from across the pond. Get ready Max.....hint, there's an oblique reference to a department store they call "Marks and Sparks"

Now Lucy looks sweet cause he dresses like a queen

But he can kick like a mule it's a real mean team

But we can love oh yes we can love

And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones

We never got it off on that revolution stuff

Michael

Interesting choice there Michael,

Actually written by Bowie for use on the Ziggy album but he gave it to Mott the Hoople when he heard they were breaking up. They had a devil of a job getting it played because of the trans-gender stuff - which was big news at the time once everyone figured out Lola - walks like a woman but talks like a man..boy will be girls and girls will be boys stuff.....

Oh - All the young Dudes of course.

OK - should be an easy one - although it was never a single - but as an album track it made quite an impression on the then young me:

"I dreamed i saw on a moonlit stair

Spreading his hand to the multitude there

A man who cried for a love gone stale

And ice cold hearts of charity bare"

I will accept album and group name if you cant remember the title - as I never can.

Max not only names the tune but gives a brief bio. Well done! Now for bonus points, give the stage name of Mott's lead guitar player.

That was a Queen number written by Brian May with round robin lyrics. In very bizarre choir boy fashion...

And two by two by..two by two by..two by two by..two by two by...two by two by
now i know, now i know,now i know,now i know,now i know,now i know,

I'll sort throught the LP's but should have the album title shortly.
Yup, it was my first guess, A Night at the Opera, song is 'The Prophet Song', same album as Bohemian Rhapsody, full of vocal gymnastics...

Here's the next one...

I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the
most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even
if you're not mad..."

Correct song title please

Try this one:

"Back in the back Of a Cadillac

Number one with a bullet, I'm a power pack

Yes, I'm in a bang

With a gang

They've got to catch me if they want me to hang

Cause I'm back on the track

And I'm beatin' the flack

Nobody's gonna get me on another rap

So look at me now

I'm just makin' my play

Don't try to push your luck, just get out of my way "

That was a tough one mate...my wife remembered it though.

That's Spanish Train, from Spanish Trains and Other Stories, 1975

Chris De Burgh

Here's another. It's a tuffy. I will give you most of the lyrics to the song...Here goes...

Wrong thoughts and emotions

Have blinded the eyes of faith

Misguided devotion kept a pilgrim

In dire straits

Where does one go

Where do you turn

The guilt and fear

Depression lurks

Just beyond your back door

Waiting for your

Decision

To live and learn

Deep in the valley

Caught a glimpse of the morning star

If we could just reach you

Get to know who you really are

Where does one go

Where do you turn

There's a place

A fortress high

And an open door

Waiting for your

Reception

When you arrive

Alright Colter, I won't make you guys suffer. My library of relatively obscure music could probably stump you guys for days...and most likely grind this thread to a halt...I won't do that...It is the Christmas season afterall[:D]

It's not a chick band, and the song is actually pretty cool...very Beatlesque.

It's "Stong Tower" from Phil Keaggy's 1988 Release "Find Me in These Fields"

Phil Keaggy..former lead guitarist with "Glass Harp"...25+years as a solo artist, 40+ solo albums, now back with "Glass Harp" Don't skip over this guy...most underrated guitarist in the world IMHO.

Anyway, a more mainstream lyric you seek? Try this...(hint--it's a band from my youth...early 80's)

Not long now till the ultimate experiment

He's breaking all the rules

He wants to cure all matter of imbalance

In this world of fools

He locks the door and looks around nervously

He knows there's no one there

He drinks it down and waits for some reaction

To all his work and care

Hey, hey he fumbles for what to say

He loves the world except for all the people
