la scala build?

Hi all newbie to the forums. I have been talking with the good doctor and he suggested that I ask my question here. I want some la scala's for my ht/ music duties 7 of them to be exact. I have a brand new stage one and 2007 that im dieing to use. I have been looking for a while and there hard to find local and next to impossible to get someone to ship them to you. Also you really dont know what youre getting. Which got me to thinking I could just make some of them. The finish would be great and the components top notch. After a few hours of looking I found some excellent drawing on the site. Now this is where im looking for you guys expertise. What would you use for the tweets mids sub and crossovers? Would you go with the normal klipsch stuff k 77, k 55, k 33 or something else. Every once and a while you see that stuff on eBay, I could just get it piece by piece.

Carolinacat,

Welcome to the forum her is my recommendation

Woofer: Just get your standard K33E,

Squawker: I'd recommend the Altec 511b, w/K55M driver, other's have/ will recommend the Altec 902 driver as well for a two way rig.

Tweeter: Bob Crites new K77 replacement

Networks: Al K's Universal replacement or his ESN Crossovers and yer good to go

Doc the La Scala cabinet would have to be cut apart or built with the Trachorns in mind before they would work due to the additional height clearance required. The Belle is doable because the top section is removable.

It would be alot easier for you to drive to Alabama and purchase the multiple pairs of split section Pro La Scala's from the eBay seller than to have to build them all.

See my post & link in HT section.

I guess it's just a matter of how picky you are about your sound quality and how similar you want your clone to be...

Btw, I also mentioned to him in the PM's to start off right away with

the ported mod in mind too...It's just a few more pieces of wood and a

port so it wouldn't be that expensive (heck, it could probably be done

with all the scrap wood).

You could also use Altec 511B's with great results, the K-401K composite horn is available brand new from Klipsch parts for $50.00.

Many say the K-400/K-401 are like laser beams and the larger Altec and Trachorns eliminate alot of that and allow the sound to pass more fluidly and in larger patterns.

One thing to keep in mind: original LaScalas will keep their reasale value. Buy used ones now and in 10 years you will still be able to get what you paid for them. Make em yourself and you may be dissapointed in what others want to pay. There is always value in originals.

Do you think it is really worth paying about 200 extra for a trachorn over the klipsch mid horn. It seem you can find the klipsch for 50-100.

Without a doubt Al's trachorn or the 511b's are a very noticeable improvement. The difference is as significant as replacing an old set of crossovers with brand new ALK's or the like. IMO it is a very noticeable and very much worth it upgrade. I myself would build em. If you want to put different horns in a used set the value of having an "original speaker" is gone anyway.

Im still plainig to build them just not all at once. I plan to make 1 pair very soon. As far as componets, I am thinkin as of now to use Mr. Bob's k77 tweeter, k55 drivers, ALK Trachorn k33 woffers and the ALK universal crossovers. I figure roughly 1500 to build a pair like this not including the cost of wood or any other little things.

I'd say your pretty close with your cost estimate plus wood and materials. Should be a fun project. I myself would add a 2 inch riser on the bottom and maybe a 1 1/2 inch riser in between them bass bin and the HF cabinet. Kind of like Klipsch does with the LS II's.

  • 8 years later...

What about building the 1/4 pies that Claude has and then buying the EV horns Mark has? Mark has the EV horns for $400 for 4 of them with the drivers and Claude said it is around $400 a pair to build the 1/4 pie bass modules. Then get some miniDSPs for crossovers.
