Center channels

Hi guys, currently i am running (4) Rf-3s front and rear, an Rc-3 and a

pair of Velo 18s. Power is supplied via an Hk-AVR 525 powering the

center channel and an HK PA-4000 bridged powering the fronts and rears.

HK's crossovers set at 60Hz for the fronts and rears and 80Hz for the

center.

That being said i am happy with the sound when things get going but

have constantly toyed with the idea of adding a second Rc-3 to augment

the first one or move on to an Rc-7. Now that the newer reference

series are out I am again toying with the same idea but have added

interest into one of the newer Rc-64s.

I would love to have a few recommendations on which of the three would

be the best path to go down, and whether or not the newer reference

series would still sound good with the older models that i am currently

using.

Any help is most appreciated.

-Eric

I have not heard the new reference series so no help there, but I would warn against two of the same center speakers connected together. You need to be careful with comb filtering. usually, you would only need one center. I am sure others can help more, I just wanted you to know your question was seen.

Thanks for the insight guys. I will stay away from the 2 center channel

setup and steer more towards locating an Rc-7 or Rc-64. Also i am

working on getting a better digital camera to post some pics though

right now the system is not set up in an optimal room for sound

(especially with the real estate the Velos take up).

Lastly westcott do you think it would be easier/better sounding to

raise the crossover on the Rc-3 to 80-100Hz, and follow up with the

Rf-3s in the same fashion (moving their crossover from 60Hz to 80Hz),

or lower the crossover on the Rc-3 to 60Hz to match the Rf-3s.

I have tried each and honestly it seems that there is very little

difference although I get worried that i might blow the little Rc-3 at

60Hz when the system is cranked.

Regards

Eric

RC-7. Do it, and never look back!

If you over do anything, make your center the best you can.

In a perfect world, they would all be the same..(Thats another topic... LOL) But for your situation, With reference speakers anyhow... a RC - 7 would be a fantastic upgrade IMO.

This is one area where it will take some time for you to get used to the sound before you will be able to determine what is best.

It took me almost 3 months of testing before I decided to stick with 60Hz for MY system, instead of 80.

My reason for going down to 60Hz was because my subwoofer has a hump at 70Hz and above that was detectible when set at 80Hz. This causes the midrange to be a little less accurate. But, it also created more ambient sound from ALL the speakers and this was something I did not like. It was a trade off but in the end, clearer midrange won!

I suggest you set them to 80Hz for now and listen to the system complete for a while. Then you can start on the critical setup issues like this one over time and when you are more familiar with the attributes of your system.

Good Luck and we can not wait to see your pictures when you have it all set up!

Thanks for all of the input guys. Joe, i eagerly await your review on

the difference between the rc-7 and your new rc-64. Both of these are

supposed to be vastly superior to the rc-3...now its just a matter of

which one to get.

Keep me updated.

Just for kicks, I compared the RC-3 and the RC-3 II and the Series 2 is a sligh improvement soundwise over the first Gen. I opened them up for the hell of it and the differences that I found were, RC-3II had better and bit more foam, better cabinet (series 1 has cap design on the ends, 14ga wires vs the 16ga in the series 1, visually beefier crossover in the series 2. The woofers remained the same model, but the tweeters were different model number.

Yes I was bored to do this.

Hey there,

While we're on the topic of center channels, what's a good match for the KG series? Dont wanna spend more than a couple hundred bucks...

What if I had an unlimited budget? Just for curiosity's sake?

-Fauzi

The KV-3 is a nice center. I have it between two KG 1.2's in my secondary ht.
