DIY garage project - brazilain rosewood veneer

Recommended Posts

After I posted this pic, there were many questions, so thought I would start a thread on it.

I'll post a few pics here but you can see the entire project on my website: Wardsweb's Corner Horns

The veneer was glued on raw with wood glue and in some places 3M stray

adhesive. It was then hand block sanded starting with 320 grit, working

my way up to 1000. Then a couple coats of DEFT semi-gloss laquer

finish. That's it, nothing special. It's just very pretty wood and the

DEFT is good stuff.

Oh . . . my . . . goodness. The mind reels.

This reminds me of Forbidden Planet. It is only later is revealed that Morbeous has found the Krell lab and increased his own IQ. They he builds Robbie the Robot, and decodes the Krell language. Then finds the under ground civilization of the Krell.

When the earth men arrive, he says, "just something I tinkered together in my spare time, child's play."

You built a magnificent Hartfield. This might well be described as the lost civilization, and you had your IQ boosted.

I trust this is based on the second Hartsfield? Please tell us more.

Many congrats.

Nothing as lofty as Hartsfields. Just a design I saw in my head. No

major calculations or than reducing the cabinet volume for the woofer

and making the right port sizes.

Now my new project is a little more grand in design. These will be

filled with drivers out of my old A7 voice of the theater and I'm

adding a JBL 077 slot tweeter.

Wow - Thanks for postig this. But your pic of the veneer strips above, is what scares me. Do you have to recut the edges on all those strips or are they ready to go and can just be butt up to each other? I wonder if they sell it in pre-done sheets.

Curious - about how many square feet of veneer did it take to do those?

They are not square strips, they must be cut, but for enough to do both

cabinets I spent less than $100 for pre-ban brazilian rosewood. Any 4x8

sheets still around command a very steep price. Check places like Oakwood

for types of veneer and prices on 4x8' paperbacked sheets. Easier to

work with than raw veneer and you don't have to do butt joints.

Those look a bit like Widget's speakers. I love the curved sides, which will make them very strong. The slot tweeters are so cool.
