Tom Adams
Just announced......Juan Pablo Montoya has made the jump to NASCAR to drive for Chip Ganassi Racing. In the interview JP commented that F1 was great, but how tough is it to pass in F1. He said, "You touch wheels and pass and you're a animal in F1." JP also commented that he felt was NASCAR was more exciting to watch than F1. So...... To all you F1 folks that bash NASCAR......I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. oldtimer
The cars are so cool in F1, I wish they would modify the tracks to allow for more passing. Nascar is somewhat less boring to watch on TV, but the sound of the cars is more boring. Nothing beats the sound of those F1 cars. So I guess I'll have to keep watching both..... That would have been something to see . But wait , in a few years we could see a scenerio like this - ( Montoya and Schumacher are trading paint comming out of the 4th turn heading to the tri oval . Schumacher takes Montoya to the wall , and Collin McCrae running 3rd takes the checkered flag for his first Daytona 500 win ! Gilbert
Lets look at this intelligently......JPM's contract with McLaren ends this season, where he currently earning about $7 or $8 million for the season, BUT had mentioned to F1 Magazine that he would love to stay with McLaren, but would consider moving to Renault or possibly BMW. Now, some Yahoo ([]) here on the forum says he's moving to NASCAR, where he'll surely earn peanuts (by comparison).....HA! NO FREAKIN WAY JACK SPRAT. Once in Formula One, you never move backwards, unless your name is Andretti. Anyone wana make a bet on this ???? Sunburn I don't understand you statement "This guy will make Kevin Harvick look like a saint !" What incident are you refering too, that makes you think ole Juan is a dirty racer? Currently, Micheal Schumacher is the only dirty racer in F1. JPM is a clean racer, with huge, HUGE cojones.

My bet is one years' salary. Time for you to put your money where your fat mouth is. Oh - and FWIW, I got my info watching the live press conference where JP and Chip Ganassi made the announcement and took questions from race media persons. Oh, and BTW, JP hinted that there are other F1 drivers interested in NASCAR. And for your information (not sure why I'm even bothering with you), JP had options with his current F1 team for three more seasons and they were all but certain he'd stay on. When he called them to tell them of his decision, he said they were shocked & surprised, but had no hard feelings. And that the negotions with Chip Ganassi took literally ONE HOUR to conclude. There must be something along the way of sponsorship and endorsements to be considered . Now, some Yahoo () here on the forum says he's moving to NASCAR, where he'll surely earn peanuts (by comparison).....HA! NO FREAKIN WAY JACK SPRAT. Once in Formula One, you never move backwards, unless your name is Andretti Hmm. , you must be refering to Michael Andretti . His dad Mario was very succesfull in every form of racing he competed in . But off the top off my head the names Zanardi and DeMatta come to mind . Anyone wana make a bet on this ???? Oh Yeah , I'll take your bet !!! "What do you wanna bet ?" Montoya announced it this morning to the press and all the drivers . He also announced it at the begining of the race today to the veiwing public . Sunburn I don't understand you statement "This guy will make Kevin Harvick look like a saint !" What incident are you refering too, that makes you think ole Juan is a dirty racer? Currently, Micheal Schumacher is the only dirty racer in F1. Shirley you can't be serious ! He has caused many wrecks and seldom if ever takes responsibility . You put this guy in a full bodied race car and I gaurantee you he will be spending alot of time in the NASCAR Hauler . "And Michael Schumacher is the only dirty racer in F1 ?" Shirley you must be blinded by Idol Worship or just plain blind . That has got to be one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard ! Get your head out of the sand ! It looks silly ! JPM is a clean racer, with huge, HUGE cojones. I agree about the cojones part but Anyone that gets into one of those land based fighter planes has those as well . Along with some of the most rigorous physical conditioning of any athlete on the planet ! Clean racer JPM is not . Thats why having him in NASCAR is going to be soo much fun ! Moderators Travis In Austin Posted July 9, 2006 Moderators Share Posted July 9, 2006 I don't think Juan is going to be very sucsessful in NASCAR. I don't think the format fits with his style of racing. I might be wrong, and we will just have to wait and see how it all unfolds. colterphoto1
I live in Indy. It has been nice having all three major race types here, but frankly a majority of the population here at Race Central could care if F1 stays or goes.
3dzapper
JP will no doubt gross 30 to 40 million a year in Nascar including salary, purse share, memoribilia sales, sponsorships and commercial endorsements. Mush as Gordon, Stewart and Junior do. He will be a huge attractant for the burgeoning Hispanic market. Sponsors and other companies will be busting down his door. oldtimer
Yeah there is money in both venues. Different kind of glamour though. I am impressed by both because of the driving talent involved in both. Most innovations that filter down to the average guy have come from F1 historically, sort of like the innovations in sailing trickling down from the America's Cup. Jay481985
then again most safety/convienance factors are banned in racing. i.e. traction control (lets not go there with ferrari cheating and F1 allowing it since everyone was doing it), abs, most races ban awd aka quattro, variable front and rear spoilers via ferrari's approach to not using rear spoilers anymore, xenon lights, etc Also most car innovations came from LeMans not F1 due to the race being alot older in origines, they saw the first supercharger (in a bentley), the first disc brakes, the first in alot
jheis
I'm not a WWF, er sorry, Nascar basher, I simply can't stand oval track racing. Oval track racing in phony cars with phony "yellows" to bunch the field and make the "racing" closer for TV has zero appeal to me. (I know they do two road courses a year - I live close to Sears Point & its fun to go out and watch the roundy rounders fall off the road when they have to link a left with a right...) There are some great drivers in Nascar. It would be nice to see what they could do if the financial rewards didn't prevent them from moving beyond the "good ole boy" hokum. Gilbert
(not sure why I'm even bothering with you) Because you love me; and you shouldn't get bent all out of shape over this. It's sports Tom, clam down. Besides, I really thought you were joking, or trying to get a rise out of some F1 fans. Weren't you the one that did this last time? Anyway, not much to say, except that I was wrong. How much do I owe you? Wait, we never shook hands, never mind. I'll send you a CD or LP instead. What ya like? I based my statement on JPM's comments to Matt Bishop in an F1 Article from earlier this year, (June or July 2006 I think). Based on JPM's comments, it clearly looked like he was desperate for someone in F1 to sign him on for a long term contract (3+ years). All he could get is a 1 year contract, which apparently wasn't good enough. Between that, and Ron Dennis's (JPM's boss) decision not to resign him, has resulted in JPM making a major career change. I try to stay on top of F1 by reading my auto magazines, and all I can say is No one In F1 saw this comming. No One. Should be interesting to hear what the regular F1 commentators have to say during the next race. I was also wrong about JPM's salary too, it's actucally $12 million. Don't know what NASCAR principals pay their drivers, but I don't see Ganassi Racing paying him anywhere near that. Should be interesting, and I'll have to watch NASCAR races a bit more closely next season. I will remember where I heard this late breaking racing news story first, on the "The Klipsch Forum".
