Help me out..looking for audiophile quality CD's

Hey folks....especially stuff you can find at your local Record store, BB,CC..whatever. Just looking for seriously well done recordings or any links to websites that sell them.

With the addition of my new amp and it starting to burn in and sound really friggin awesome, I am doing some serious 2 channel listening. Hell, I'm even thinking of buying a TT.[]

I also find any in the stores that are REMASTERS are always of good quality...................CD's have come along way lately, much better than the first wave of them........they are regular cd's.............not sacd

4AD record label.......all bands superbly recorded. Dead Can Dance except for when the guy in the band sings quality can't help his voice.

I recently picked up Hank Williams SR 40 Greatest Hits and it is the best remastered Hank Williams I have ever heard. Perhaps not "audiophile grade" but it is the best quality hank sr ever.

Someone here on the forum went to go see Gordon Goodwin & his "Big Phat Band". He gave them a glowing review. So good, I bought two cd/s 'blind'. I gotta say, they are amongs my favorite recordings as far as showing off Heritage speakers!!! and I was never a big fan of "big band" music (I am now and these are mainly the reason why). These things are great. I try to make sure that ANYONE who comes here to audition the Jubilees hears part of them.

As for a DVD, I'm coming to belive that David Gilmours concert is pretty high up there (for me). I'm still a bit confused as it seems to be several shows spliced together. Regardless of that, I love the very intro to the dvd when it's just him on the guitar. The floor squeeks, his footboards click as he steps on them, you can hear him wiggle his fingers on his neck of his guitar. Later on, the intro to Wish you were Here (something like track 10) is in my view, the best sounding part of the entire cd. I don't know how much "snap" a big bass violin can have (is that a basoon or a chello????) but you can positivly hear and FEEL the snaps as that guy plays the bass notes. I'll put that dvd on just to specifically hear that intro, though the rest of it is good too.

Simon & Garfunkel (dvd) "Old Friends" sounds utterly fantastic.

Edit: It's David Gilmours "Meltdown concert" and track 10 is "Dimming of the day" (which sounds great also) and track 11 is Shine on You Crazy Diamond. It's the intro to Shine On that sounds fantastic. I got my stuff crossed up above, when I said it was Wish You Were Here.

"Audiophile quality CD's" to me means CDs published by labels that care about sound.

Maybe what we need is a list of trusted labels who consistently put out good sounding music.

You could probably start with the stalwarts:

Mobile Fidelity
Audio Fidelity (although they seem to be MIA for the last year)
Blue Note
Living Stereo (SACDs but they still have a CD layer so I'll count them)
Channel Classics (again, Hybrid SACDs)
Linn
Mapleshade
Telarc

Please add to the list because I'm sure there are more.

I usually find better sound in the used bins versus current remasters from one of the big five (Sony, WEA, BMG, EMI, and UNI). Their interests seem to be in reselling product by maximizing (squashing dynamics) and repackaging. [:@]

You could almost generalize that any CD not published by the big five will sound better than what they put out. It's sad, and they wonder why there is no interest in CDs (sorry, end of rant).

I value musical content more than production, but this will do it.

Also, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" will give your system a workout. I can't recommend a CD version as I have an old LP. Bruce Swedien is a MF. Sounds great, but the music is a bit out of fashion lately.

I'm more confident you might enjoy the music on these - check out fellow 'nuck Daniel Lanois' "Shine" and "For the Beauty of Wynona". He also produced Dylan's masterpiece "Time Out of Mind".
