Groomlakearea51
It's a great story, I'm even thinking about the picture as an Avatar!!!!
oldtimer
Urban myth, but there was the prototype Chrysler jet car as featured in a sappy 60's movie, I think called The Lively Set. Called the turbine car, and the female lead was a very fetching Pamela Tiffin.
Islander
There were actually 55 of those turbine cars and they were used by a group of selected members of the public for what we would call "beta testing" today. Four of the cars are still functional. Islander
Here's a photo of a U-2 from this year's Oshkosh air show, showing the "pogo wheels".
Bill W.
Sounds like the fuel tanks are in the wings, jettisoned wheels are needed for support of heavy, drooping wings until there is sufficient lift for takeoff but upon landing, the weight (and drooping) are no longer a factor. BEC
If you notice the landing gear, it is similar to a bicycle. The pogos keep it from falling over and dragging a wing at slow speed on the ground.
Marvel
The SR-71 on display in Hunstville was flown in, and landed on the highway, and then moved over to its display position. I think it is a two seater. They used them for weather tracking.
oldtimer
I think that's the one I've seen in person Marvel. It is a gorgeous plane to my eyes.

BEC
For something truly wild and crazy, look at this variant of the A-12/SR71 called the M-21 with the D-21 drone attached. The M-21 (M for mothership) would fly close to an area considered too dangerous for a manned aircraft and launch the very fast D-21 Drone. The D-21 would gather the information then go over international waters where it would eject a film canister to be recovered then self-destruct. BEC
Then there is the trainer version of the SR-71 called the SR71B

Man, if that was giving rides to the public, it would be booked for years to come! Photoshop, bringing dreams to "reality".
