New member here - seriously thinking of changing my primary speakers system to K-horns. Need help

Hello all -

Current system profile is listed in my profile.

Previous experience with pre 1976 Klipschorns and a Quad 405.

Have a little $$ to burn now and am thinking of a set on stacked K-Horns as they become available off Ebay (top one inverted).

Room is big with a 9'-0" ceiling. May just use the midrange cabinet from one set leaving room for sub(s). Adjustable support for top bin is an issue as is spacer / cloth for gap to be removable / match.

Primary drivers and crossovers are all open to change.

Integrating Sunfires for only below 30hz is possible (L+R)

Image is very important to me (my VMPS years). Want to go back to horns for dynamics now.

welcome to the forum.

Sorry not to be of help offering advice on stacking the Khorns. Interesting idea, though.

groomlakearea51 has got some pics of his system on the forum, somewhere. He has got a sort of unconventional array of Khorns that he is quite pleased with. Hopefully he will chime in here and link to his configuration.

One thing I'd mention is that if your crossovers are original they need to have the caps replaced. Caps over 20 years old get resistive and have drifted off spec. It is an inexpensive fix to essentially restore to factory spec. The improvement in sound is like having new speakers.

Welcome to the forum......I'm not sure what stacked Khorns would do for you...I have a big room and my Khorns will about blow out the windows/ crack the foundation if I give them anything more than a few watts.... I ran a test / set-up disk the other day an I had to readjust all my pictures when i was done..Like Groomslake area51 I too play with an unconventional set up and run Khorns , Cornwalls and Heresies all together for fun...but the Khorns alone are amazing.

one thing to think of to upgrade from Khorns is to consider Jubilee's or MWM bass bins with K401 drivers....Coytee and a few others have Jubilee's and Mark1101 has the big industrial bins....

Where are you located? If you get down to florida you are more than welcome to check out my horns as I am sure GLA51 would be glad to audition his WALL of VOODOO

Depnding on how much you want to spend Jubilees could be an option. There is a forum memeber in England that owns a club that has stacked Klipschorns. The Khorns stand normaly with another flipped upside down on top of the other khorns. This ways the hf sections are on top of each other. It looked damm impressive.

Your idea of stacked Khorns reminds me of a disco installation I did back in the mid '70's in Lincoln, Nebraska. The bar owner wanted a killer Klipsch system so we stacked Khorns on the corners of the stage (tweeters together), used a LaScala for center channel in front of the DJ booth, and flew two pair of LaScalas along the back and sides of the dance floor. The dance floor was raised with all the lights inside.

As you might imagine, the system rocked. The stacked K's looked really impressive, but, . . . . . .they did nothing more than add a few db to the total SPL. A single pair of K's sounded every bit as good. Shhhhhhh, don't tell the bar owner. . . . .

If you really want to return to horn dynamics, the absolute best way to do that is with a pair of Jubilees. They are more efficient than Khorns. The 402/K69 hf is the real magic. You will hear imaging, presence, and dynamics like you have not experienced before. I owned Khorns for many years. I sold them after I bought the Jubilees.

I thought Klipschorns were meant to stand on the floor in such a way that the floor was part of the horn. If that part is in free air at the top of your stack, wouldn't you need a cover in the top corner to replace the floor? Wouldn't be hard to do, I guess, just a sheet of plywood.

He meant to say K402 horns. The K401 is the horn used in the Khorn, LaScala... the K402 is a touch larger... [*-)]

Where can I hear them? (tried sending Klipsch the question as to where, but no response as yet) ...... close to 54016

The mids and highs & x-overs seem to be the big improvements on the Jubilees over the Khorns, right? Can they Jubilee mids and highs mate w/ Khorn bottoms x2?

Also need a way of making them look house broken.

Bass horn on the Khorns is a lot bigger using the corners too, right?

Not trying to be a budinsky...far be it from me to be opinionated...But I'm still trying to figure out what your needs are and what you are trying to accomplish?

Have you ever heard upgraded Klipschorns with ALK es networks?...I have a pair that just blow my mind no matter what I throw at them ....smooth smooth smooth.....bass to die for ,...velvet mids and highs ...the notes just hang in midair like Michael Jordan....the 3D imaging is unreal!!!

They Are "housebroken"..look like beautiful furniture, and the foot print in the corners is actually smaller than my Cornwlls in the corner because they tuck in so nice.

I have 10'ceilings in a 16'X24' room that is open onto the kitchen and family rooms...and have yet to give them more than a few clean watts for fear off cracking the foundation...

I know the Jubs are reputed to be awesome and if I had a dedicated screening room in my house thats what I would want to do as they would be shoved in barley lit dark corners (don't hate me guys [:D] )

Me...Just me,and I had money to burn, I would hot rod,newer, mint Khorns......maybe get a laScala center for 3 channel stereo depending on your room....and then buy the absolute best sources and source material money could by. I would

1.)get a Tape Project/Bottelhead RS 1500 and a subscription to their tapes

2.) Vpi scoutmaster/dynavector cart and a subscrip to Music Matters Blue Note releases

3.) get a really really good cd/Sacd player

your source material is what is going to give you the best Sonic improvement by quantum leaps, no mater what speakers/amps you have

I won't even go into the great amp debate....hey this is just my opinion which really ain't worth crap because I'm not you...but bigger, larger, louder, isn't always better.

fender ... (and Klipsch Community readers) - my goals with this crazy idea:I lived with Khorns (mid 70's factory Khorns) with good electronics, etc. Didn't have CDs then but pretty good LPs and best table, arm, etc.

After going to my VMPS monsters in mid 80's I got image++ and an extra octave and a half of bottom end (really heard w/ some CDs) ....... but not as dynamic (or real). Khorns had SO much (their) bottom octave acoustic energy and mid / highs were first row center - albeit flat in presentation.

Had a chance to work directly with PWK and his then chief engineer GG in the late 70's so I guess I was then fully infected with the horns / physics bug. Unlike some Hope guys then I can have my beliefs changed - so modified Khorns is not out of the question (and a lot easier / cheaper / housebroken / etc.).

I'm wandering here.My goal is to get back to horns, KEEP my bottom octave and a half, and IMAGE w/o the aggressive horn qualities I heard before (even w/ very good Quad equipment!).

The stacked Khorns was to be bass horn loaded into ceiling and walls (inverted), bottom bass into floor and walls (normal), and one set of horn mids (mortited) / highs (T-350s) . The Sunfires (L+R) were to be my bottom end as was necessary. Thoughts of which crossovers are further down the road as well as exploring independent amplification and / or digital time alignment (I like that better).

Nope, haven’t heard the stock Khorns w/ ALK crossovers. Probably need to hear them.

Haven’t heard the Jubs either. I know they look ugly - but they are supposed to be behind the screen. Mid and high horns (Tractrix?) look impressive!

Just trying to get ideas in advance of listening and then buying and building.You are correct fender - I do need to listen ......... but still don't have a place / seller to do that with as yet.

My goal is a LAST set of speakers (for me).

No butinsky thought - heck that's why I posted.

My music is what I can get commercially that I like. Also (fortunately) I have a friend who was the recording engineer of the 60's thru 80's and he has some "special" tapes for CD dubbing / sharing too. I agree on how good really great source material can sound especially as compared to their commercial versions and certainly prior to the MP3 / Pro-stools generation.

I appreciate all input here. I do not know it all (despite my avatar) so any / all ideas and thoughts are very welcomed!

Hop in your car and drive 644 miles south on I-35 to Wichita. I'll crank up the Jubilees and barbeque some burgers. My sub-woofer (KPT-884) is good down to 18Hz with reeeeeally clean, tight bass.

Or. . . . . . .

Climb on a plane to Little Rock, rent a car, and drive to Hope to hear them in King Roy's lair.

Don't be messin' with modificated K's. Get the pinnacle of PWK's and Roy's design genius.

You gotta do it!! You owe it to yourself!!

Which means you want to do it right. your real decision is... do you want to tilt the teeter-totter to the asthetics side (Khorns) or pure performance side (Jubilees)

I'm presuming that Mr. Budget is fine with either outcome.

Yeah, they're plug ugly however, when originally designed, their INTENT was to be in the home as the replacement to the Khorn.

If that is really the goal (in spite of me quoting you in reverse order [;)] ) then that alone defines which way the teeter should totter.

UPDATE!

Haven't moved to go for the new speakers as yet - economy.

Replacing VMPS IIa/R Limited Editions soooo - it will be a race to get that depth of bass and image. Hard act to follow if you have heard them.

Still serious about going back to horns though - love the low octave energy of Khorns (or Jubilees) and live sound I lived with before the big VMPS.

Where are you located? (as in city/state).I saw the zip code but am currently too tired to do a google search. I never understand why people talk in zip codes instead of cities! Unless of course, you do or have worked for the USPS....then I might understand.

Regardless.... the BEST thing you could do is take some time/effort and go hear someones Jubilee's. If you want even more balls to the wall, go hear someones MWM setup with the K402 on top. Realize the MWM's are maybe 6' or more wide though? The Jubilees will be more space efficient.

Have you been tracking the Danley DTS-10 kit? Based on experiences with two of Danley's earlier designs--TH-SPUD--one of these will do ya (see profile).

I'm in the D/FW area if you're passing through anytime.
