  1. Typically horn flare rates (areas)are described by the term "cut-off" frequency aka "Fc"; at freques below this this the horn just about stops working. You put Fc into the exponential equation however, PWK often used the term "lamedh" (I'll use "Ld") to describe the horn area expansion; It is the lengh of travel down the horn in which the area doubles (or halves). Therefor the expansion works like animals / bacterium doubling every time period. If my math is correct, the cuttoff wavelength (I'll call it "Lc) is 18.1 times the length to double. We can examine the LaScala's two paths (combined) and notice the area at the throat is 0.5 ft^2; then the paths go across the back to the interior corners where the area is 1 ft^2; then toward the front for a foot to where the area is 2 ft^2; then another foot to the mouth where the combined area is 4 ft^2. Therefore we see the Ld is 1 foot or 12 inches. The Lc is thus 18.1 * 12 and we dived the velocity of sound 15,00 in/sec by that wavelength to get an Fc of 62 Hz. We can check the PWK article on the K400 horn and notice that the length to double is given as 2.75 inches. The math like the above shows that it's Fc is 270 Hz. PWK was really getting it to go as low as possible to where the bass bin on the Khorn is running out of steam! Good night all, WMcD

  2. It is instructive to look at US Patent 4,210,223 (Note this is corrected)which concers the big MCM bass horn woofer. The Length to double area is 23.3 inches which gives an Fc of 31.95 Hz. You can find the document at USPTO.GOV or Google Patents. There is in that patent document some design information. And Klipsch and Gillim use the 18.1 figure (so I was correct!) Many thanks toJames and also to John A for helping me through this stroke time. WMcD

  4. I doubled up last night @JohnJ. 😂 Bout 30 wimmen rolled in having a birthday party for one of them. Place was packed. Ya couldn't even get to the front bar so they had the back bar open. All kinds of food. Wound up w/a plate of ribs and about 25 amazing smoked devilled eggs. Figure that one out. Exactly, he's runnin on empty for sure. IF he'd cut Nils loose it would be a fantastic tour for sure imo. BTW @AndreG. that Di meolaio lp is great! 😂 Know you'll enjoy that!

  5. @Abomb Take it easy on me I didn't know it was Sunday til 2PM. I wondered WHY my lil meds tray that said Saturday was empty. So I took Sunday's just to be safe cause I thought I remembered taking them yesterday. The boys moved Jam Night from Friday night to Saturday night THAT started all of this cause it's always on Friday. One of the guys in the band called me about 2 and asked if I wanted to head to Columbus with them to see Springsteen. He and his wife had an xtra ticket. Guess her sister was gonna go w/her hubby and he bailed. I said well that's tomorrow night. He started laffin and told me it was Sunday. Yea, ok... @JohnJ knows the kinda crap that happens on jam night. Dazed and confused. Sometimes I really think I need a "Medic Alert" bracelet! 😂

  10. Actually had about 4. lol The guy who smoked the ribs had 50# so his wife made 6 dozen devilled eggs and he did those at the same time. Guess there were smoked scalloped potatoes somewhere. The women were eatin ribs while dancin, which was hilarious. Had to be a mess to clean up. See what happens when someone has a birthday on 4-20 around here? THAT'S why they didn't have jam night Friday night. Yea, Nils and the brothers are fantastic. He's short leashed every tour. He gets lil runs here and there.

  11. Whew! Two dozen deviled eggs? Glad I'm long gone for sure. Sure you meant Nils Lofgren without shortstuff would be a good show. Yea I've talked to him, and I'm taller! He did guess why I was antsy, and my hot date did wait on me. The fun that was being 20!

  20. We are very fond of our British Whodunits, in no particular order, Miss Marple (Joan Hixson), Midsommer, Endeavor, Poirot (David Suchet series) , Father Brown (the second series), Murder in Paradise...we also like Murder She Wrote which we consider an honorary British Whodunit because it fits the pattern so well. One thing we've noticed in all these is an eagerness for the perps to confess...unlike American shows of similar genre that are very lawyer-centric. Another is that there is rarely any mention of people other than the perp being charged as accessories, when that's a factor in almost all US "crime dramas". We used to watch Law & Order when Jerry Orhbach starred.

  24. Great band from the 80's. Started out with Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar. When he left they replaced him with a fairly decent guitarist. Steve Vai...lol. Now it's a new lineup but Graham Bonnet is still with the band and showing that he still has the pipes.

  26. Only read about the first half page then skipped ahead to see this post my first thought was to add a sub or two a stereo pair plus an LFE if you want to get extreme that should give you plenty of balance let the Heresys do their thing above 50hz without straining to get more or just trade them in for the forte iv which are similar footprint with lots of good strong bass

  32. Give 'em a listen before buying if you can. If not inspect for obvious damage and price accordingly. Don't worry about replacing anything that's not obviously bad. Leaking capacitors and damaged drivers if present should be accounted for in price. If that all works I would take them home set up and play some music. If there aren't any issues I'd listen for awhile before spending money. See what you like and don't care for before spending money so that when you do spend money it will be well spent. Good luck.

  34. For years I've had no good place to listen to 2-ch audio. Now, we've moved, and I've got an entire room all to myself where I can make as much noise as I want What I've got: RF7's QSC PLX1802 ENTECH 203.2 DAC Source will be PC w/FLAC, WAV, high-bitrate MP3's, etc. I used to have a conrad-johnson tube pre last time I had things setup, but I sold it a while ago, and now I've temporarly got the PC's sound card output (analog) going to a harmon kardon AVR5 I had laying around, with the RF-7's plugged right into that. The sound is "ok", but the AVR5 is underpowered for the RF7's, and the analog audio from the sound card sounds muddy and imprecise. I also have a PS3 hooked up to the AVR5 with a flat screen, but I'm not interested in any kind of surround sound. I have a whole other setup for that elsewhere. The Vision: I'd like to be able to use the RF7's and the PLX1802, as I think those two items are keepers. They sound great togther. I need a pre, and while I could use the entech DAC, I'm not opposed to acquiring a new DAC as well. A DAC/pre combo with inputs that could accomodate the PC (via USB?), the PS3, and an AUX source would be great. I'd love to have something that looked sexy on my desk with a usable volume knob. I liked the tube sound of the conrad pre, but I'm certainly not married to it being a tube pre. I found this: http://www.essenceelectrostatic.com/product/high-def-audio-control-center/ It looks like it would do everything I want, plus more. However, it's way too new to have any real reviews out there. I'm interested in hearing some suggestions for both things similar to what I have in mind, or something different. I'd love to hear from folks with a similar list of desires, and what you did and how you like it. I'm not afraid to spend money, but within reason. For all the great 3-5k pre's out there, I know there's also plenty for far less with wonderful reviews. I don't need to spend more to "feel" like it sounds better The HDACC linked above is ~$700. -Rich H.

  36. I have 6 vintage receivers. My Marantz 2215B is the smallest of my 6. It boasts a gargantuan 15 wpc, sounds great with my Fortes, and although I prefer every other receiver I own, I won't turn it loose. It's purty. (The others? Read my signature.)

  37. phase. . So, apparentely (and everyone else probably already knows this), most of the CJ preamps are not phase-correct. You have to reverse your speaker leads to correct the phase . . I read this and mostly dissmissed it since the majority of people claim you can't discern phase difference, but I tried dropping a track to mono, reversing the leads on just ONE speaker and using the balance to switch between the phase incorrect left, and the phase correct right. Big difference . . . beats sound 'correct' on the reversed channel and 'wierd' on the other. Since all my listening is mp3's, I'm wondering if something in the encoding or decoding process makes correct phase more important. . . The difference is obvious. . unlike very subtle as most people describe. Insights? -Rich

  38. You know it's hard to say. .. I really wish I had something to A/B it with. Some tracks sound soo full and amazing. . and others sound like they've just run out of steam. I guess it could be more of the recording quality showing through on the higher-quality of my components . . . I've noticed in general that live or acoustic stuff sounds really full and realistic, and a good portion of studio-recorded stuff that I liked before almost sounds harsh now. . Maybe i do have mismatch problems. . I dunno It's hard to describe. . . Again, really wish I had more equip to A/B with.

  40. the amp was awaiting me on the porch when i arrived home. . . Unboxing, first thoughts: WOW, physically much nicer than I expected. The photos really don't do it justice. I'm typically a good judge of build quality, and this thing is top-notch. I'm very picky in this area. It's solid as a tank and the fit/finish is very good. It's clearly meant for a lot of tossing around whether in -or- out of a rack. Sound quality: You're gonna have to take this review with a grain of salt, because this is my very first high-quality amp. I really don't have much to compare it to. The best I've owned before this was a Harman Kardon AVR5. The power is just simply clean and endless. Any amp/speaker setup I've ever had in the past I could drive to the point of distortion from either lack of power (amp shortcoming) or too much power (speaker shortcoming). This is not the case with the RF-7's and the PLX 1802. I kept goin higher and higher till I couldn't take it anymore (ohh c'mon you've done it!!!!). This sound was just crystal clear and full. I've owned a lot of amps in the past (HK, sony, optimus, kenwood) and they've all imparted some sort of "vibe" to the sound. This PLX doesn't. . . . everything sounds even and smooth across the frequency range. The cooling is exceptional. I can't hear the fan at all, but admittedly my PC's fans are fairly loud and are probably just drowning it out. When driven hard it warms up to the touch, but as soon as you back off it cools VERY quickly. I'm darn happy -Rich

  42. The PLX2 will power my RF-7's in a 2-channel only setup. I use my PC as a preamp with the sound card's optical SPDIF out running to an entech 203.2 external DAC. The DAC then connects directly to the amp. I'm currently using an HK AVR5 receiver for an amp. This PLX2 will replace that. The original thread in which I was asking for suggestions on what amp to buy is here: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/thread/808009.aspx Yeah, I called QSC and spoke with an engineer, and he told me that too. . and insisted that the amp circuity was essentially unchanged. . .. Hope he's right Thanks, -Rich

  43. First check Musicians Friend. They were blowing out the PLX series amps. There are two versions of the series 2 amps, designated by an "02" or an "04" One of the two, I think the "02" amps, does not have the current capacity of the other. This may not be a problem with klipsch speakers, but you shoudl know that one is a heavier duty version than the other. musician's friend's stock is dried up, but thanks for the suggestion. the 02 is actually the better model, with the 04 model not being 2-ohm stable or supporting bridging

  45. bad news, good news, and now I'm worried . . . . . The place I ordered from @ $680 shipped cancelled my order and refunded my money as they no longer stock it. This isn't a surprise since it's not the current model, but their website DID say they had it in stock. So. . I found another dealer that's selling for $559.99 with free shipping. I ordered from there, but now I'm worried they too won't *actually* sell it to me. I DO like the sound of $560 vs $680 though Finger's crossed . .
