  1. An old Thorens bought in 78 over in Germany. Sounds great with an Ortofon cartridge.
  2. No one has mentioned reflectivity of optical yet. It can have a most dramatic effect on the data path of a cable. Dull the edges of a cheap optical cable and watch what happens. Cheers.
  3. Bella Nota from Lady and the Tramp on 45. Flash Gordon and the mole people on 33 1/3.
  4. US- Get a Job/Don't/Sugartime by the Silhouettes/Elvis Presley/The Mcguire Sisters shared #1. UK- Magic Moments by Perry Como
  5. Is not JBL owned by Harmon Intl.?? And I believe Dr. Floyd Toole has made some significant research into the acoustics of the ear and how it relates to the blind listening test theory. Oh by the way, the IMAX at Edwards Cinema here in Houston has JBL and it sounds pretty good.
  6. I use an KV-2 for the center and 4 KG1.2 for the surrounds. As far as the subs go I used my SW-8 mated to the center channel and have gone to the SW-15 for the LFE. I would not sell the Heresy, in fact I would put them on stands to raise them off the floor. Better imaging. Keep the Heresy's. I have had mine since '78 and they never fail me. Cheers. Have a St. Arnolds
  7. You've got to go to Amsterdam to find the fillings. Sounds like a good album. New vinyl will be much appreciated. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers. Have a St. Arnolds
  8. Lucas is still better than Morelli Magnet I used to have in a 70 Porsche. Dual points that cost 75 a piece. Replaced it with a Bosch, nuf said.
  9. Welcome to the insanity and howdy from Houston. That sounds very familiar to a friend of mine. His new wife has Heresy's. Of course she is from Arkansas naturally. Get a sub and a dedicated center channel. Try a KV-4 and then get another set of KG2's for the rear surround. Cheers.
  10. As an older Klipsch owner and forum lurker there seems to be an inordinate amount of Nyah, nyah, nyah. This forum is for finding about new methods of amplification, TT tweeks and pre-amps. It is a 2 channel discussion only. It should not matter if you have solid state, tubes or what ever brand X. Technical discussion is theoritical at best as everyones ears are different to what one hears. As an owner of one of the finest listening devices I have heard it is amazing that the scriblings I see involve people that tend to have their own opinion and no one else is right. Of course we all think that we have the best sound system but there is someone out there who will better us. Maybe we should put up a fight club in the forum with no rules, no moderation and no holds barred and let these infantiles take their rants and accusations there. I have heard much better sound from other sound systems but it is not worth the matter to debate on who is right! Just enjoy the music and let people know when a new product is coming out, the latest tweek or when vinyl comes back with a bang. Or at least a pop or two. This is just an erudite opinion on what I have seen and read but the name calling has to stop! Cheers.
  11. Sorry to hear about your Onkyo. I have the TX-DS797B and absolutely love mine. Are you sure you don't have problems with your room? I run Heresy's and until I upgraded from my SW8 I thought the sound was excellant. I ran my sub in a corner loading and was amazed at the sound it produced. Of course the new subs are better and I can hear what I was missing. Try repositioning your speakers and see what happens. Then you will be tweeking for the rest of your life. Cheers.
  12. Ahh, Red Rocks. The Dead '79 what a show. Went to school at the School of Mines across from the Coors brewery. On Friday's we would slip out of Integral Calc and have a few. Luckily the teacher would also show up. If you get so inclined go to The Historic Mint restaurant in Dillon. Great place. Cheers.
  13. If you want the best bowl skiing you should go to Arapahoe Basin. Not to far from Breckenridge. They have a black run there that is called Pavalicinni. Right down the main lift that will let everyone see how well you can do. Talk about some pressure. Used to live there from 79-81. Loveland pass is not to bad as it is more for the locals. If you go to Idaho Springs there is a pizza place called Beau Joe's Mountain Pies. Highly recommended. Cheers
  14. Vinyl is the way to go. synthetic gut vs. cat gut in humid weather you can almost watch it unfurl. Remember the double albums that allowed you to roll your own. Can't do that with a CeeDee.
  15. I second the Thorens route. I bought this in 1976 and it has never let me down. The good folks at the forum here even recommended places where I got a new belt and cartridge. The needle doctor is a great place to find hard to get items for the TT. Cheers
  16. Remember Orwell's 1984. Fear and prejudice and I'm still loathing around. If you want to see a parody of rap music go rent the movie "Fear of a Black Hat". It is like Spinal Tap with a rap flavor. After I saw this movie my opinion of rap music changed forever. It is one of my all time favorite movies and everyone who has seen it damn nears pees in their pants. Cheers
  17. Hobby is the closest. You can get a bus that will take you downtown. I believe you can go to Metro.com and find the appropriate bus schedule. The hotels downtown are fairly nice. There is a hyatt that has a rotating restaurant. Too bad your not here right now as the rodeo is going on for 2 weeks. George Stait tonight. As for food there is the downtown aquarium, hard rock and various venues downtown. Good luck and go Astro's. By the way Roy Oswalt is the starting pitcher. Cheers.
  18. Welcome to the Thorens madness. Finally got a new belt and cartridge and it sounds better than ever. Amazing for something that's 28 years old and can beat the pants off of CD. Try a Santana Half Speed or the Maxell Jazz Sampler. Another progressive jazz would be Return to Forever-Romantic Warrior or Jean Luc Ponty A Taste of Love, maybe just in a Valentines mood.
  19. Go to www.dreamtheater.net they are releasing dates for their upcoming tour. 2 sets, intermission and no warm up band. I know I will be sitting in front of the mixing board. Also YES will be touring this year. 30th Anniversary with Rick Wakeman. This will be a very good year. Now if we can get the lads from Genesis out of the box. Cheers.
  20. The Astrodome originally had Klipsch sound reinforcement when it opened. Of course Klipsch could not help out with the acoustics of that place. Yes played there in 73 and it was pretty bad as the sound was a continuous echo. Thank goodness for Reliant stadium. The Superbowl will be fantastic but a word of warning for travelers coming to the bayou city, watch out for our new metro rail that goes down Fannin. We have had 6 wrecks with the trains and it is still in the testing phase. Jeesh. Cheers.
  21. I'll take LSU and the line anyday. What is it now 6 1/2 points? Any takers? OU should be favored but, what if Mich. beats SC, K state beats OSU. Who should be #1? We need a playoff. Cheers.
  22. I would scrap the Infinity tonearm and get something else. I have a Thorens and that was one of the popular arms for it but people just had problems with it. I would go for another TT and just use the cartridge recommended. I still use the standard arm for my TD-145Mk2 with an Ortofon MC20 and have been enjoying it since. No feedback or hum either. Cheers.
  23. Remember that everyone needs to have a Muffeletta, beignets and of course some chikory coffee. I live here in Houston and the last time I was there was when Texas got their arses kicked by Virginia Tech. One of the best cities to go to in the world. Maybe next year I will take the trek to the crescent city. Anyone on the board should go there. The food is the best and of course I should mention that great Dixie beer. Have a Happy New Year, shuck some oysters, peel some mudbugs and file' your gumbo. Cheers.
  24. THX is a set of parameters. There is no encoding going on. A reciever that is certified meets a requirement set by THX. This does not mean that non-THX equipment is anyway inferior. You can get all of the info at www.thx.com . There are certifications for home and cinema products. I use THX on certain movies and for some I do not. They even go as far as certifying cables. As I remember THX came about from one of Lucas' engineers tring to get better sound at movie theaters back in the 70's. I think his name was Tomlinson Holman and they called it TomlinsonHolman'seXperiment. Cheers.
  25. G3 Live NIN All that could have been Genesis The way we walk SRV Live at the ElMocambo Dave Matthews Listener Supported Rush in Rio Rush Exit Stage Left Cheers
