  1. $1100-1300 each wow I guess I have been out for awhile, I don't normally look for retail heritage items, there is an abundance of used for reasonable prices and speaking from personal experience heritage speakers last dang near forever. I remember when you could get Heresys for $600/set.
  2. OK I am the other side of this discussion. I say go used. You can rebuild or replace the crossover but you should listen to them first. Another good thing about used is you don't have to do it immediately. You can enjoy them and do you mod's/upgrade you desire at your own pace. 80's vintage KHorns will sound fantastic if set up correctly. Al K sells the crossover parts for his ALK's for about $300 for a set of 2. You can refinish them to what ever you feel would look best in your setting. And as indicated by a previous post they virtually never wear out. I have had my 84 vintage La Scala's for 20 years now and I am just now looking into moving from series AL networks Al K's series A. You will save a ton of money over the new and even replacing parts is not cost prohibitive. Granted new KHorns are a beautiful thing but IMO so are the used ones. The thing you have to decide is how much you are willing to spend, new in my neck of the woods run about $6000-$7000.pair. Used about a third of that depending on their condition. Parts to make them sound new $300 for xovers and maybe a couple hundred for other misc. things they may or may not need. But its your choice.
  3. How does one display their jaw hanging to the floor. Q-Man you are the man!!! Superb work indeed.
  4. "Oh yeah? So what do you goons think of THIS Bose? http://www.bose.com/pro/dd/product/pdfs/97022t.pdf" I don't think of Bose.....ever!
  5. "I have bought dozens of Klipsch speakers..." =HE HornEd I would love to one day be able to say that.
  6. "I tore off the mid horn and tweeter cabinet and have mounted the 901 in a plastic Kleenex box the sound is unreal." I agree 100% the sound of BOSE is unreal, unnatural, unpleasing and any other unflattering description you can think of. Why would you waste a Kleenex box like that?
  7. I would look for Heresy's or another set of Forte's for your surrounds. May want to change the center to a Heresy also but its not shielded. You'll get a much better timbre match that way. If you get the Heresy's put them on stands. You'll need a good sub and might want to consider room treatments as well. Placement depends on how many discrete channels you have. 5.1 on the sides facing each other, 6.1 in the rear toe them in. Take a look at the link below. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3088641778&category=61378
  8. "used Heritage models will help him discover music again! Look for Heresys, Chorus, KG4s..." Ditto!
  9. Ooooh ...UR ... a cruel man and should be forced to listen to the Bose cubes at high volume for a week straight. Even the mere suggestion that the legend that Paul built could go away is constitutionally banned as cruel and unusual punishment. Happy April 1
  10. Welcome, sorry to hear about your house/speakers. You should be able to get a direct replacement for your Heresy's. Try going to the dealer locator on the Klipsch website and look for a Heritage series dealer closest to you. Then I would recommend getting a quote from them and feed that back to you insurance carrier. I am no expert in this area but I believe most policies are written for replacement value but you will need to double check on that. If all else fails try the auction sites like E-bay or Audiogon. Just because its older does not mean its bad. Mostly youll se cosmetic issues but sonically they are usually very sound. Ive had my La Scalas for 20 years and they still perform like a showroom set. Heresies are still made today. I believe they are about $600-650 ea. You may be stuck for a deductible but I would not recommend settling unless you get a direct replacement particularly since its available.
  11. 3) Connects: silver interconnects for your source(s); try Kimbers or such. Judging by the effect of silver interconnects, if I could afford it, I would get silver speaker cabling too, but I can't feature spending that much, so I can't recommend that; Get good, fat copper speaker cables at least 12 awg or better. This can be a very expensive tweak for silver but gives immediate results. Others on this forum will disagree about silver cabling, but I have experimented with all sorts of cabling and have owned 3 types and brands of silver interconnects in various lengths I will go as far as saying this: the worst silver is clearly better than the best copper cabling. It also unfortunately cost more, too. I would be one of those who disagrees with the silver interconnects. While the conductivity of silver is much better, silver tarnishes/oxidizes much faster and you would be removing and cleaning you connections more often. My recommendation would be copper wire with gold plated connectors. Gold is a self-lubricating metal and it will not tarnish or oxidize like silver will and yet has decent conductivity.
  12. This is probably too late since you are looking at RF 35's and were considering Heritage line but did you look at the Heresys? They are a fairly small package and deliver quite a bit of sound. I am not trying to persuade you but its an option. They are available used all over the Internet for $400/pr range. A used set of Heritage speakers is not a bad thing.
  13. I too am interested in this topic and was hoping you'd get a few more bites on this. My plans are to get a third La Scala and split it into two with the Squawker/tweeter box above my set and the Bass Bin below and the sheilding solution is of great interest to me.
  14. You may want to post your sub question in the "Powered Subwoofer" section. There is a wealth of information there. I myself am somewhat befuddled by which sub to get for my plans. But SVS seems to be a popular choice as does Paradigm and host of others but the folk hanging out in that part of the forum are fairly knowledgeable. I believe you will find this forum (Klipsch Forum in general) is very informative and addictive over time. The wealth of information here is exceptional.
  15. Beg to differ: P = ie which is watts (power dissapated = current x voltage) High current = high wattage. DM DM - Now divide each side by e and you get right back to YGMN's comment
  16. Welcome to the Forum, a $10G budget is a great start. Separates are a great way to go, clearly the best option, but the cost can be prohibitive. The newer AVR's (Denon, Yamaha, H&K, B&K, Pioneer Elite) are also very impressive $3000 spent there will give you a very versatile rig. I used to be exclusively a separate component type but I am very impressed with my AVR. You can get a good DVD like a Denon 2200 for around $600, its not the best but its pretty nice and will play DVD, DVD-A and SACD. If you want something like a Denon 2900 you'll be in the $1000 arena. I would Say $4K is fairly accurate for an RF 7 group. My recommendation is not to buy the RS-X speakers but instead stay with four monopoles. So that leaves you $2K for a TV, I would recommend you get a wide screen 16:9 aspect direct view. It will look very nice in a smaller room. You should be able to get a 34 for that. As stated above your speakers will have the greatest impact on sound so money spent there is probably the most critical. Although you dont want to upgrade later youll need a subwoofer. You may also find in time you want a rear center as well. But the systems laid out in this thread will keep you happy for some time to come. As for me I perfer the Heritage line across the board but in order to stay within my initial budget I run a mixed system. The Reference series is a very impressive line of loudspeakers and you'll enjoy them for many many years to come..
  17. "Poor misguided soul is just trying to justify his purchase of the wrong receiver for his Klipsch speakers. I hope he feels better. Denon laid back, what a laugh, I think a hearing test is in order. Want a demonstration of killer sound c'mon over I'll send you home with your tail between your legs! Oh by the way Happy Holidays to you too! Can't really say which is better, which is more accurate. I may change my mind when I get older / my ears are cleaned out / the weather changes...etc. It's all about individual preference. I will never attempt to shove my little old Yamaha up anyones butt, it as well as any other system out there just might sound like crap to that person. I think everyone here has read a review on gear by a "professional" that they totally disagreed with. I like brunettes where you like blondes... either way is GREAT! Go listen for YOURSELF............ Later ha ha ha ! What do you buy all your crap at Goodwill? Pete, how did you guess? However I left the RF's and the Yammi receiver for you to buy. The AVR-3300 is from my bedroom system. I got rid of my AVR-4800 and bought a B&K Ref 50 that I did not like and I am waiting for my NAD T163 Pre/Pro to come in if you must know. Whatsa a matter don't like a little poke? You can dish it out but can't take it huh? Boo Hoo. I have nothing against Yamaha at all, I think that they make an excellent product and have for years but what you need to understand is that it is all a matter of personal preference. But if you want to put that puny setup of your against mine, bring it on baby, prepare to be dessimated!" Didn't we just get spanked over this kind of stuff with a threat to shut down the forum as a consequence???????
  18. Q-Man, Indy, Edster, Drool, drool, drool! Excuse me while I wipe off my keyboard drool drool!! Wow your set ups look spectacular. Awesome!!!!!
  19. I have a mixed Reference/Heritage set up. While the sound is not unpleasant its not what I would prefer. I did it mainly to stay within my initial budget. First I use a RC 3 II, it cannot keep up with the La Scala's. I have to boost its signal almost 6.5 db to make them close and when I turn it up the La Scala's just simply take over. An RC 7 might stay closer but the timbre mismatch will be noticeable. If you can get a third La Scala you would be much happier. I know some of the forum members have split the bass bin and the squawker/tweeter box to put one above the set and the bass bin below it. That way you won't have your TV mounted up near your ceiling. That is my goal when I get the cash. Another option is the aforementioned Heresy. But I believe you will be happier staying in the Heritage family for your entire set up. As I said before my set up does not sound bad but its not what I want in the long run.
  20. mOOn, I believe all of eth Klipsch Reference and Synergy centers are properly shielded. I have and RC 3 II that sits on top of my TV. IMO that placement (On top of or directly underneath the TV) enhances the spoken dialogue to make it sound more realistic.
  21. Horn Ed, I was just wondering why you prefer the analog to a digital SPL meter. Unless you are referring to the analog's RMS indication which tends to give averages because it does not sample and react as fast as a digital. Mind you I am not critiquing your choice I am just curious. I have the RS digital SPL meter and I like it. Now I need to get the AVIA disk. But using the SPL meter and my AVR's test tone made a world of difference in how my set up sounds.
  22. If you have the means I would go with the RC 3 II. You would be guaranteed a timbre match. I have a mixed system that on the surface makes no sense but it sounds pretty good. Granted its not my end goal but it kept me within my initial budget and now I can take my time and work on getting what I really want which is an all Heritage HT. RC 3 IIs are no longer in manufacture and their replacement is the RC 35. You might be able to pick up one at one of the auction sites. And like everyone says its what sounds good to you and what you like. But if you want a recommendation get a RC 3 II or RC 35.
  23. I prefer to keep the way I like to read. I try to punctuate correctly and also enjoy having the option to correct my post if I see something wrong with it. To its just easier to read if you keep it like you would expect to read it on paper.
  24. An alternative you might want to consider is to look at the available used Klipsch Heritage items available on places like E-bay and Audiogon. Buying Klipsch new is not cheap unless you look at the sound you get for the money spent, and then Klipsch are very reasonably priced. 2K for a 5.1 or greater set up may be best done this way because you could get 3 sets of Heresys for that, you would still be out a SW but I think you would like the outcome and could save for your sub later. Also the WAF should be good because they are a relatively small package in terms of size and deliver a lot of sound for whats there. In any HT systems you will more than likely want a SW to handle the low frequency sound of special effects of movies but the Heresies are a good start and affordable as well. This will also give you the benefit of perfect timbre match. That way your systems will sound good musically as well as cinematically. I think you will like the monopole surround affect best as well IMO.
