I am always on the lookout for new stuff and always trying to rediscover the old as well. My tastes are far and wide, so, while that affords me more availability, I still find myself longing for more. And yes, it does seem that what passes as musical talent is becoming a joke these days. Sirius has been a big help in my quest, but so has this and other forums.

Started in high school in the late 80s with a pair of Sansui 3ways with a 12" woofer that was white. Those got stolen while at college. Then a friend of mine in college bought BIC Venturi's and since he was going to be moving about the counrty, I bought them from him along with a Technics reciever. I still have both after 10 years, but use neither. I think BIC is the company that is now making the Klipsch knock-offs with the copper woofers. I held off as much as possible before taking the plunge for what I have now. I knew that if I didn't have the best of the best and settled for something else that I would be longing for more. So I waited, shopped, waited, shopped around some more, saved some more money, shopped around, saved some more cash...

I would say downconversion is a factor here, but its hard to say. The Mitsu TV (if memory serves, the WD makes it a DLP) is native 720p, and since ABC is also 720p there should be no issues in that regard. However, the cable box could be upscaling the 720p, outputting at 1080i and forcing the TV to downconvert back to 720p. My TVs native resolution (one of them anyways) is 1080i and I make my dish box send everything in 1080i as well (if its not 1080i it gets upconverted by the box). I've never experienced anything like you describe, but have had other issues such as horrible compression on standard def football games. All of the games I've watched in HiDef have been breathtaking and free of artifact.

The online version of the Wall Street Journal's "opinion page" will often report a "roundup" of good news that encompasses a few weeks or a month at a time. The article is usually very long (because there is actually quite a bit of good news!) and takes a while even for my speed-reading eyes to get through.

As mentioned before, the study is flawed ~~ it really does not meet statistical significance. When they come back with data representing 10s of thousands of participants across a diverse background, then I'll listen. Otherwise I'm gonna go with what I was taught: non-ionizing radiation (under 33eV) does not increase risk for cancer... (and there is data of 100s of thousands of people to back that statement up)

While many in the 2ch forum are purists, who will listen ONLY to that type of music, I embrace the new formats. I can appreciate the 2ch stuff, but I thouroughly enjoy 5.1 and 6.1 too. Granted, there is plenty of crap out there, but when multichannel stuff is done well (think DSOTM on SACD) it is a total blast. I also find myself more and more using HK's Logic 7 processing to listen to 2ch stuff in 7.1 -- I find it waaaaay better than DD or DTS:Neo6.

About a year ago someone on the forum linked to a chart that measured several different recievers' and their 'stated' wattage ratings and then 'actual' measurements for all channels driven. I remember it saying that HK, Macintosh, and some Denon products met or exceeded their specs, while most of the other companies didn't. Can anyone find this for me?

As well as "American Pie goes to BandKamp" or whatever the hell that was. I will give some props to Bubble, though, as it was completely original. If I had to, I would rather watch it than most of the dreck being pumped out of Hollywood now. The movie was shot on a shoestring buget, and used 'real' people as opposed to actors -- I'm just not so sure those are good qualities.

As it turns out, I did record the movie. I watched it last night. Blah. Some of the dialogue was painful. 50% of it could have been left out and it would have only made the movie better. I'm glad I didn't pay for it.

I thought the dialogue was extremely clever! The fighting between Brad and Angelina was hilarious, but the fighting at the end was a bit over the top for me.

This is from a (very sarcastic) friend of mine: I think someone at IMAX should really be tortured to death for their transgressions. Go to amazon.com or some such site and look at the dvd feedback. You may find 1 person who liked it, and every other comment is along the lines of "there is almost no underwater footage in the Whales DVD; were the IMAX photographers afraid of the water?" "why is the Yellowstone footage almost entirely stupid historical re-enactments of indians?" etc etc. Talk about the ultimate f-up to have access to the best multi-media setup in the world, and waste it in that fashion. They should just make a 1-hour "best of" DVD will all the non-BS scenes from all the DVDs, and I would buy that. I have two IMAX discs: Superspeedwaymach2 which has awesome sound, and the one about the International Space Station which is mediocre.

I saw this advertised on one of my HD channels... not sure which one. I set my DVR to record it (I think it did so last night) but I guess it wasn't the actual movie, but rather one of those 'sneak peaks' that movie channels like to do. I like the way Soderbergh does suspense -- I look forward to this one.

What a bummer! I guess that answers the question of if these amps were related to the cornwalls FS in the local paper: a resounding NO.

I actually replaced a bunch of Monster cable that had turned green. Very nasty stuff. My guess, is that happened as a result of using those wires when I moved from apartment to apartment. Windows were often open, etc.etc.... The replacement was the HD wire. Its been two years since I bought the enormous roll for cheap, and I've had no problems with it -- but I think that has more to do with the fact I keep my new house hermetically sealed now.

I think those are about 5-6 years old. It probably won't have the frills of today's (ex, es, thx, crazy inputs/outputs) recievers, but since most movies are DD/DTS 5.1 it shold do everything you ask. I'm steering a friend in the "used/older reciever" market as his Onkyo is dying: I like the bang for your buck! Lets hear some feedback/comparison info and then we can tell ya what to do.

That price range is quite limiting in terms of 'stout-i-ness' I would think. You might could find some cheaper amps, but the surr.proc would quickly bust the budget. Denon, Harm.Kard., and others would be decent 7.1 recievers in that price range (used, refurb, etc.) but don't know if they'd be stout enough for you. You may find a gem in a local pawn shop and then try to lowball 'em...
