  1. What did Groucho Marx say??? I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member. Actually, this IS my favorite forum. I've learned a ton (and am still learning) and met some great folks.
  2. According to the specs, the ported sub goes deeper (18Hz vs 22 Hz). That being said, I might choose the sealed. It goes nearly as deep, has eq and the sealed configuration is nice for music. The ported sub will drop off sharply below the tuning frequency of the box where the sealed sub will drop off more gradually.
  3. What design is that ? An IB housing ? Actually an IB doesn't have a housing or a box. The drivers are mounted directly to a wall/floor/ceiling where the front wave of the driver fires into the room and the rear wave is sent to a different area that's at least 10 times the vas of the driver. The above box is a tapped horn with a 12" driver,
  4. There's one that I've been wanting to build but have no place for. I'll keep it under my hat till the time presents itself. It's cost you the price of a driver and some wood.
  5. My son is a bit of a bass head, so for his 16'th birthday I bought him a pair of Cerwin Vegas for his room. They're design goals were bass 1'st, SQ second. I couldn't live with them but my son absolutely LOVES them. I hooked them up to my 60wpc JVC integrated amp that I bought new in the mid 70's. The setup pounds hard. He's recently moved into an apartment and was tired of the JVC not being able to do all the switching required for his myriad of gaming and music inputs so........... We got him an 80wpc Pioneer receiver for his last birthday and after the move to the apartment we switched from the 35 year old JVC to the brand new Pioneer. Once we got it up and running he started complaining. "Dad, there's something wrong with this receiver, it doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as the old one did" LOL.
  6. Why? Dave Because he might end up back HOME!!!![:S]
  7. Nice. That SVS sub's a nice one. If money gets tight and you want one built, just holler.
  8. Rain in Beaumont but none in Corpus yet.
  9. So you'll be building this in the NEW house?
  10. What have you got left to do on the HT? Are you going to finish it now or after you get into the new house? What are your plans for a sub [6]?
  11. That was absolutely incredible, thanks for the link.
  12. I believe the Klipsch engineers wrung every last bit of performance out of that driver and amp. I'd be REALLY surprised if there was a ported configuration that could give you more. You might make a box that was tuned lower but you'd decrease overall output plus, the high pass filter built into the amp would cut output below the original box's tuning point. There's also the possibility of overexcursion of the driver if you could get a lower signal to it. If you build a box with a higher tune, it wouldn't be as good for HT but may get slightly louder for music. Your call.
  13. Neutral to warm, check out the offerings from NAD. No matter what pre-amp you settle on, be sure it has some sort of room correction software.
  14. Probably just some silicone composite cones if I had to guess, may look good but not really as good as original equipment. I'm not an audiophile nor a purist, they all work for me.
  15. In order to build a Sub-12 clone you'll need a Klipsch driver and amp. I doubt you'll do a better job at design than the Klipsch engineers, so why build one? The other issue I see is parts. There should be some drivers floating around but the amps on those subs crap out so frequently, I doubt you'll find a used one. If you did, you'll spend a lot of time fabricating a sub with a timebomb for an amp. You'd be better off buying a driver and fabricating a box using that particular drivers T/S parameters. Buy a new plate amp with a warranty and enjoy.
  16. Nah, he's in an apartment. I've got cut wood and a driver for a small tapped horn sub, but I've put off building it for him. I don't want him to get kicked out[]
  17. She probably did send it to the government. Nothing happened. Shocking.
  18. Wow. She has more restraint than I do.
  19. We'll have to get updates from Michael (USNRET) and my son. They're both in Corpus.
  20. AWESOME!!!! Congrats!!!! [Y] [Y] Welcome to the next phase of your life. Better buy all your stereo stuff now. Kids have a way of disposing of your disposable income.
  21. Lotsa gators down your way isn't there Groomie[H].
  22. OK dtel, we've seen the spikes, now show the equipment rack.
