  1. yes, pretty much sums it up... never heard Al's ES networks but can say biamping done right is very impressive. Greg
  2. crazy horns, crazy guy...go figure. Shawn, I look forward to your impressions of the horn. BTW,thanks for the help getting my system going,it does ROCK!!!! Greg
  3. here is a link folks. SAVE it to FAVORITES NOW!!!!! http://sound.westhost.com/articles.htm
  4. Yes,great site! His articles along with some fogg(crazy in a good way guy) inspiration got me to my biamp setup. Greg
  5. I seem to have that problem also, the speakers just disappear! Glad to see your Scala's continue to amaze! Greg
  6. What is ELF? ELF (Extended low frequency) was invented by Ron Wickersham and Ed Long and represents the first significant advancement in low frequency reproduction since 1953. The ELF system insures that the lowest 3 octaves of the audio and sensory spectrum are reproduced acoustically in the same time and frequency relationship as the electrical input to the system. Electrical frequency response of the ELF dual integrator Acoustical output of the ELF system Acoustical frequency response of the ELF loudspeaker in a sealed box Impedance amplitude of ELF loudspeaker in a sealed box A fundamentally new approach to low frequency reproduction, the ELF employs electronic compensation to the uniform response that a sealed box loudspeaker system exhibits below its resonance frequency. The resultant frequency response can be extended well below the audible range while at the same time greatly reducing the influence of the system resonance. An ELF system reproduces each note with precision and uniformity while maintaining a flat frequency and phase response, eliminating the tendency to emphasize the notes around resonance as in conventional bass systems. The patented ELF dual integrator provides both a very flat response below resonance and the high frequency roll-off above resonance, for crossover to the midrange driver, without the use of conventional low pass filters and the delay typically introduced by them. An inherent bonus of the process requires the enclosures to be small. For example, a double 10-inch ELF system measures only 13" x 22" x 13" (1.5 cu.ft BagEnd operates thier subs below the resonant freq.of the enclosure and the integrator provides a x-over to the mains.Looking at the graph you can see the freq rolls off at 12db per octive(for a sealed enclosure),the integrator adds gain in proportion to that roll off.The downside of this setup is you need an outboard amp with lots of power(SS watts are cheap),the integrator and the sub or subs.I run 2x18" BagEnd w/ELF integrator and a Bryston4B PRO amp. If you ask the Ear on the sub forum he will tell you its not his cup of tea LOL something about massive amounts of creative eq,wonder what he thinks his Velodynes are doing?I can say I have lived with this dedicated sub system for about 6 months and it walks all over the many Velodynes I have owned.I think alot of Velodyne and like thier products but I have never heard such a seemless blend with my Scala's as these BagEnds/integrator/crossover.The Velodynes bass was never as integrated as it is now.The crazy part of all this is the impact at low volumes, usually I was turning the volume up to get that. The bass is clean, tight and detailed. If you ever get around my neck of the woods on your never ending trek for KLIPSCH give me a call and you can hear for yourself. Greg
  7. Hello, A few years back I was bidding on a Mark Levinson #39 CDP.After not winning the auction I recieve several emails from different people claiming to offer me the ML unit for a ridiculously low price.I deleted them figuring it was a scam. Like yourself I cant figure out how they got my email or knew I was bidding on it.I did forward some of the emails to ebay, never heard back from them. I would ignore them as you would probably lose your money. Greg
  8. I believe that system would ROCK!!!!!!!!!!! I should know because I have the same. I saw no mention of the required ELF integrator for the subs but one can be picked up for a decent price. Greg BTW,you would need an amp for the subs.
  9. Charles, I run the 902's from 400hz up and they work fine.I cant tell much difference from the K-77 in response with the benifit of a 2way Scala.I have the 902-T's(T=Theater).From what I understand the A's are rated for less power that the B and T versions which have loading caps to limit excursion and protect it. Shawn, Have you ever heard the Altec 203B's?I missed my chance for a mint pair on ebay that went for $25 ea.I would think with a 288G driver rated from 300 to16K in a 2way setup would be sweet. Greg
  10. This thread is particularly quiet...somebody must be listening? Greg
  11. Rocket, I am also interested because in my biamp setup I have a Rane 2way.I am interested in the Marchand's and possibly going the one.The Rane I got pretty cheap on ebay to just get my system up and running in active mode.I hear alot of good things about Marchand and am particularly interested in his tube unit. Which model are you using? Greg
  12. I owned a pair of 86' Scalas with AL's and liked them but I was running high power SS gear at the time and tended to stand on them all the time LOL,only way they sounded good to me.They just didnt open up or get very dynamic unless you cranked it.I sold them because I thought I was gonna go deaf.Maybe it was the crossovers,my 2000' Scalas with AL3's are voiced way different, less murky sounding.Dont feel the need to stand on it.It must be the crossover as that is the only thing different. Listen to them awhile then definately make a crossover change.BTW congrats! Greg
  13. I hope you come back from your trip with perpective and fond memories. Greg
  14. Sounds like you found a component that has the synergy in your system you like. If you feel the same after giving it time then great, ultimately your ears are the ones it has to please. Greg
  15. This is Houston, your breaking up lots of static..sorry couldnt resist. Did you try a new tube or swap with each channel? You might try cleaning the sockets or retensioning if possible.Did you swap all the tubes from channel to channel? How old are the amps? Other than that I can't say much more, sorry. Greg
  16. Hello, Just recieved my Cunningham 345 globes manufactured before 1935(no codes). They have been playing for about 2 hrs and well...WOW!!! holyschmokes batman!!! Initial impressions are these are very open, clean, smoooothhhh and walk all over my RCA Cunningham 45's(ST mono blackplates made in the 40's).My RCA's are very nice sounding and have similar qualities but are more closed in,not as effortless in a way...dynamics?They remind me of my NOS RCA 2a3's in someways and yet are on another level entirely. Just think these tubes are older than probably everyone on this forum LOL.Hell PWK was a young man and could have heard these very tubes somewhere...yes now I am getting carried away. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9720148917&sspagename=ADME:L:AAQ:US:1 I keep saying and will do a post on my impressions of the various 45 and 2a3 tubes in my system.Last time I tried I lost an hour of typing due to my mistake.A bonehead move on my part.I will get to it soon. Greg
  17. Michael, Finally got some BASS for all those bass shy heritage speaks!LOL Amazing the power of bass and how it completes the presentaion on most recordings. Greg
  18. Welcome to the forum and yes it does. Greg
  19. LOL,think I'll stick with what I have.Maybe some Altec 311/288G's in the future or maybe a pair of 203B's same driver.115 db sensitivity with my 45 amp, cant imagine ever getting out of the first watt! Greg
  20. Well, that was interesting, thanks. Now I dont know what to think?I know what I hear and it is better imo. I guess in my situation I have the benifit of great SET tube amps for the mids/highs and SS for everything below 400hz. I have listened toScala's for almost 20 yrs with one stereo amp and after biamping felt I was finally hearing the music for the first time.I would suggest one has to see for themselves before passing judgment. Greg
  21. another one that might fit this category would be War. My musical lineup for the next coulple hrs is: BS&T War Lighthouse(from the RHINO series []Have a nice day/vol.6) and of course Chicago Greg
  22. I would like to read that as well.I have had great sound biamping my Scala's! Greg
  23. Craig, Sorry for your loss,he will live forever in your memories. Greg
  24. Almost forgot, post a pic of your fathers ride as well. Greg
