  1. Here is a link which will walk you through the DIY http://www.swhowto.com/Structured.htm and here's a link to Leviton products which may be helpful. There are many companies with similar products, but this pamphlet is pretty comprehensive for ideas and equipment. http://www.leviton.com/lin/pdf/productcat/structured_media_systems.pdf Indy: Did you do your own setup, and whose products did you choose to use?
  2. OnMedic, Are you looking to do a server for your CD's and DVD's or are you just looking for a tivo-like device? Are you wanting to go wired (better for video distribution) or wireless and are you including any other computer traits in your system (access to word processing, internet and games). Once you have a list of things you want your system to do it should be easier to come up with a solution. I originally went wireless and am now seriously considering wiring the house with cat5e and coax in each room and switching from a wireless router to a mains system with antenna, cable, satellite and phones all begining at one location and routing to each room. Then I'll put a thin client or similar set top box for PVR (tivo) duty at each set and run the music and video off of a server in a central room (my office) wireless will still be available for the laptops to surf or save work files, but the server will be firewalled from the internet and backed up to avoid losing any CD or DVD's on its hard drives. Here's one thought: http://interact-tv.com/ they use a Linux software which is smaller than MS Media Center so they can use a smaller and cheaper processor and memory. Best of Luck!
  3. Sounds like Dave has the right idea, make friends, it's easier. Our locals are pretty good about that, but then I live in a neighborhood where (like in the olden days) people aren't afraid to knock on your door and ask you to turn it down if it's bothering them. The PD takes it a step further, by noting on their outdoor large party permits that it's a good idea to notify people a "few blocks around you" about your party to prevent noise complaints. Sounds like they like their music at "live levels too". So far no one has complained here and I like to get every watt I can outta my PA-7's and Heresy's.
  4. I'm with Michael (Colterphoto1) on this one, just finished watching/listening to "The Strat Pack" DVD and am getting ready to put in AC/DC.
  5. Coytee, Of course the young man will be in our thoughts and prayers, best wishes for his swift recovery.
  6. Marc, Congrats on the Heresy II's, been running mine since 1990. Unlike my brother (Silversport) who is beginning his tube journey (and very well, I might add) I have only use SS gear with mine. I started with a Nakamichi 50 watt tuner/amp (TA-2) and now use a 200 watt PA-7 system. Nak's have a tube-like quality to my ears and go well with the Heresy's. Best of luck with your decision, like most of us, I'm sure it won't be your last.
  7. Mine sounded best on the angled riser placed on the carpeted floor a few inches out from the wall on the closest side and toed in toward the listener.
  8. Michael, Are you talking about the "cocktail table" style rather than the arcade (stand-up) style? If so, there if one on e-bay now : http://cgi.ebay.com/Pong-Cocktail-Arcade-Game-1-2-4-player-plays-great_W0QQitemZ130009277228QQihZ003QQcategoryZ13716QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem But I would think with some wood working skills, a little art (if necessary) a plexi or glass insert, and an old desktop style computer with a nice LCD monitor mounted underneath, you could make or modify one like this one below, but load many more games. Here's a game site for popular 1980's games: http://www.1980-games.com/us/ EDIT: 7/25 2pm........Since the above is no longer available, I hope you were able to get it for your friend.
  9. Either pair of the Oakley's you are looking are are fine, I looked at them for a prescription pair and they seem well made and durable. As alternates, I've got a 15 yr. old pair of Serengetti aviators with the cable temples you can't shake loose and the orange lenses (with the copper flash that changes to dark brown in bright sunlight) make them year 'round wearers. And my latest are a pair of Maui Jim's Kapalua GLS copper with titanium frames which are waiting for prescription lenses to be made, they are almost as indestructable a my regular titanium prescription frames and very comfortable for wear. Sounds like you have a lot of choices, best of luck!
  10. Sid, I guess the first question is are these for IR controllers or is this a flat wire for something else? Without knowing that or your skill level it's a bit difficult to give a better answer. Presuming they are for an IR flasher, and not a large gauge interconnect or speaker wire (like a Nordost type) and if you are handy at soldering, you might try some 8-pin printer connectors on each end of the cut and a (as long a length as you can find or need) printer ribbon cable for you middle extension, since they have screws attached you can put them together and not worry about them pulling apart. Or if you know some one handy in installing computer networking, you might be able to try 8 pin RJ-45 extenders and use 8-wire CAT as your middle splice. Hope this helps.
  11. rplace, VERRRRRRY Nice! Looks like I'll have to go rooting through my old albums just to see who else has copied whom? Thanks!
  12. Pretty much anything by The Cramps, but in an effort to "keep it clean", I'll use this one....
  13. Sounds like a bad pc board. Certain year RCA/GE/OTHER Brands 25-26" televisions all had a pc board solder problem, in addition the EEPROM chip can easily be fried causing partial or total loss of sound, picture, ability to change channels or program the television. Sometimes a tech can resolder (carefully, as overheating the board will ruin the other chips) and other times the whole board needed replacing. I had a similar problem and ended up just letting the television just wear itself out since the board was over $100 plus the tech's time to repair. (BTW, mine was a freebee from a bank for a deposit) You might try finding the model # of your television and "googling" it to see if there were any recalls or tech tips which may help you get it repaired. Best of Luck!
  14. Actually it's #3, but it's a long drive to Taipei and Kuala Lumpur from here......
  15. Sounds like everyone has had some fullfilling experiences along the way. Edit: I'll just say that I've met the famous and the infamous, from paupers to Presidents, that some of the "most ordinary people" have had the most profound effect on my life and that along the way, I hope I've left some of those positive effects on others. All in all a pretty good life so far, with only more yet to come.
  16. Congrats on reducing your blood pressure! A little weight loss certainly can help, and I use "the machine", it stopped all of that tossing and turning. As always, Best of Luck in getting it squared away.
  17. Probably don't want to use this one hmmm....... Dr. Frankinstein: "Igor, will you give me a hand with the bags"? Igor: "Certainly, you take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban". Credit and appoligies to "Young Frankinstein" by Mel Brooks
  18. Anyone consider sleep apnea? Colter that 10hrs. for 4hrs. of sleep sounds like me up until a few months ago. I'd wake up every few hours all night long, got to be a real bear when I went to 12hr. shifts overnight and had 6-8 hrs. on most days to get 2 or 3 of sleep. Here's a site with good resources about apnea: http://www.sleepapnea.org/ Best of Luck!
  19. Tlbor, Scooterdog has given some great advice and Fgarib has an extensive review of his use of Avia which I can only second. As an additional thought, you may want to look into Spyder TV (one of several software devices which use a clip or stick on sensor) to tweak your picture, look around as several places will have it on sale for a reasonable price from time to time. It's not a replacement for a professional calibration, but it's about 1/3 the price and reusable. Best of Luck!
  20. First, welcome to the forum, it's always good to have a fresh point of view! Colter has given your great advice about protecting your hearing (as well as keeping complaints from the neighbors down) and like Coytee, I too have frequently been told that I don't act my age, especially when I'm around large wooden boxes emitting vibrating harmonic tones and the heavy metalic objects which provide their source of wonderment. (drooling begins, Oooooooo pretty shiny objects) Sorry, got sidetracked for a moment. Again, nice to have you and keep on your parent's good side, you never know what else might fall your way. Best of luck!
  21. Hmmmmmm, Tom could it be "Kelly's Heroes", after they entered the town and the "privy" exploded. And since no one guessed on my 6/23 quote it's from "I'm gonna git you sucka" and here's a new one to chew on: I'm not the first guy who fell in love with a girl he met in a restaurant, who then turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist, only to lose her to a childhood lover who she's last seen on a deserted island, and who turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French Underground". "I know. It, it all sounds like a bad movie".
  22. Sounds like everyone has been giving great advice, I'll add one more piece, I have the HP 5p a B & W LaserJet and it does the same thing. Fixed it by running a cleaning program supplied by HP from their website, not sure if it will work, but it only ate up a few sheets of paper and some powdered ink, worth a try if your model has the same software available. BTW here's a link to HP's support site about "smearing problems on printouts" and the cleaning instructions for a ColorJet 5 printer: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=25508&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25508&objectID=bpl02384 http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=125&prodSeriesId=25508&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25508&objectID=bpl02647 Best of Luck!
  23. Ok, so in addition to Guinness, I occasionally imbibe one of these, with the tall glasses I have, I only have to refill half as often...............
  24. The advice given has been very good, sounds like first you need to sort out your connections then choose the best method of connecting everything together. Blue Jeans has very good quality cables, as does Knukonceptz (they are built like a tank) and both are reasonably priced. Here's a link for Knukonceptz Video cables and changers http://www.knukonceptz.com/productMaster.cfm?Category=DVI%20/%20HDMI%20Cables# BTW, the usual not affiliated, related, etc. goes here, I've just been satisfied with their cables I use both the high end eKs and the inexpensive Krystal audio interconnects. Best of Luck!
  25. What Bobby T said.........that's how I started, wired the tv into my receiver and used the Heresy's for better sound, when I watched DVD's or dare I say it video from a VCR. Now I'm lucky enough to have a "Home Theater" Best of Luck!
