That was a long time ago when my system was all SS. What I remember is the air created by tubes and the space between notes, that is what really stood out for me. Also the ability to change tubes to alter the sound slightly... At one time I was interested in the look of glowing tubes not anymore, now its all about the sound quality...

My Khorns are tri amped and I use a SS amp on the woofers and tubes on the mids and tweeters...

I had them built years ago for my upgraded Khorns, after going all active I sold them for roughly half of what I had in them.

Well do check it out, you will not be disappointed and you will not go back to 6SN7's!!! Oh I forgot to mention that the 6J5GT's are a lot cheaper than the 6SN7's....

So if your new pre amp uses 6SN7 tubes you can try the 6F8G tubes with an adapter which are better than any 6SN7 tube I ever heard. Or even better and what I use in my Rogue are the 6J5GT tubes with an adapter, they are the most linear octul tubes out there. You will need a quad though, they are exactly one half of a 6SN7 tube so 4 tubes and 2 adapters.

Well in that case I am not sure, I have a Rogue 99 Magnum and have used many different tubes in it and the two tubes on the right side are the ones that effect sound quality the most.

Would this be a Rogue 99 by chance? If so the two tubes on the right side will have the greatest influence on sound quality, let me know if it is a Rogue I can help.

What will be the primary use of the receiver?

Sure, the sound opened up qite a bit there is a much bigger soundstage and everything got really smooth. No more honking and edgeyness...

I am looking for a nice sound set of headphones that I can plug into my tape decks and listen, time I want to listen and not bother the wife watching tv. My budget is $200-$300.

I have his early Khorn drop in mods, 2" wooden horns and 2" BMS drivers. I could never go back to anything else hearing these in my quad amp setup...

To really get the most out of your FM antenna, you must use a rotor so you can direct it at the station in question. I use a FM 6 antenna mounted on a rotor and can hear stations clearly 90 miles away.

Jeffery, (1) In this case no I was comparing NOS tubes not the EML tubes. (2) I did run just the 45 amp with NOS and EML tubes by itself before I went to an all active setup. Nothing ever sounded better to me until I went active. Just so you know when I said quad amped I was including the subs, so in reality my system is tri amped.

Now you are on to something, yes it cost more but you get what you pay for as you stated earlier they other 45's were cheaply made. My system is quad amped so I have not trouble using a flea powered tube in my setup, at 118db the mid drivers in my system can be driven with a cell phone. In my system the 2A3 did not sound anywhere close to the 45 and that's what I was referring to when I posted earlier.

You should read my reply more closely, I did not recommend anything I said what I was using and what differences I heard between them...

The 45 tube is much more linear so the sound quality is much better...

I too run the EML 45 Solid Plates nothing I've tried comes close to them, they just do everything better...

I been using a Korneff 45 amp for years with my Khorns and nothing has ever sounded better to me. I had a 300B for years in the same set up then tried the 2A3, they did not compare to the 45 amp not even close...

My Khorns are tri amped the amp I am using on the woofers only is rated at 45wpc, and I am running it at half of it's max output....

Jeffery, I did all of this testing long before I tri amped my system, so it was all done with the amps playing full range and all of the drivers through a passive xover. I tried the NOS 45, 2A3's and 300B's WE and all others the 45 tube was always the best in my system and that's why I stayed with that amp... In staying with that amp I could see no reason to take out the EML tubes as the were clearly better than all others I tried...
