  1. Seriously, you need to look at Dr. Who's posts regarding similar questions regarding acoustics, posts by mas, particularly the thread regarding small room vs large room acoustics. and go through the threads in the "Architectural"section of the Forum. The room configuration, size, etc. are going to be the key to both placement, or how you will actually "hear" the music, and which surrounds you select. Two approaches... Overkill or the "terminator" approach (it's fun, but not efficient...), or think it through and consider how the sound gets to the "sweet spot". Later, gotta' run, grab a cold one, lay on AC/DC's Dirty Deed's Done Dirt Cheap, turn on all 6 amps, the 3 pairs of K'horns, the LaScala's and the 4 pairs of Heresy's in the 12 x 12 room.... Just kidding... the room's 24 x 16....
  2. We should not be discussing this highly classified subject here; I work for the government, you can trust me.....[]
  3. I live 'bout a 'hunert miles or so from Larry the Cable Guy (for real!!).... An evera' time I head up north (past Daytona...), I git a ration 'bout my "cracker boy" accent. Best "southern" accent I ever heard, though, was a long time ago from a girl from Charleston, SC. Mellow, smooth, had that husky "Klipsch Quality" smoky bass that made me smile just hearin' it. []
  4. PS: Given the conditions of operation, get rid of the TV, it's a distraction[]; move the amps over to the side of the bed so you don't have to ruin your moments...,[A] and think about a keg tap extension hose, and lest we forget, a small fridge for champagne (and iced mugs) next to the bed.....[D]. Contact Sam Adams about a contract, it will save you a bundle on those pesky trips for refills....
  5. "Aha! An honest man" said Diogenes.... Get rid of it all, put a couple "in wall/ceilings" on either side of the mirror on the ceiling (we must now assume that is there, along wth the strobe and black light...[6]); couple of Heresy's on stands with rollers at point blank range on either side of the bed[],... just to get some presence in the performance (yours or the music, be shall not go there...[li]); and lest you overlook the option, and seeing as you've got some unused wall space, sell off everything you own and get a couple of Jubilees and put the keg in between for those few breaks for breath you might get.....[<)][][ip]
  6. Is the "sweet spot" in the bed, (1) where you generally "rack out" and listen?[|-)]; (2) Where things we dare not mention happen....? [6]; (3) Where things sound good?[8]; or (4) where you want to listen, and hope things we dare not mention happen, etc?[<)]
  7. Absolutely agree with mas; I used Shure M97HE's until they stopped making them and ran out of my "stockpile". I now use to xE's. Great price (believe it or not, on eBay) and do almost the same job as the V-15 series (V=very expensive...). Reason that the xE is desirable is that the "e" means it's a hyper-elliptical stylus, and tracks very well at lower weights. Dependent on the TT (and making sure it's on a relatively horizontal surface...), it will track reliably at only 1 gram. If you have a lot of old vinyl, that's important to reduce wear. Hope that helps. Good luck. If you decide on a M-97, and you have trouble finding a reasonable priced one, email me and I'll dig up the name and email of the guy I get them from. He's very reliable.
  8. If I had a recommendation, I'd certainly look at a good used pair of Heresy's. New ones.. Oh well,... they are expensive, but on occasion, you can find a pair of III's for about $900-1200. As far as H-I's vs H-II's, I've had 8-10 pairs over the years, including industrial TH-SR-3's, and still have my original "store bought" pair of 77' H-I's (along with 3 other pairs of H-I's and II's of various vintage). They are a very versatile speaker, as many have mentioned in this thread and in others. At moderate volumes, they work very well, and I do agree with OB that for real "presence", a modern subwoofer will probably take care of any of your bass "needs". Placement is important; I've also found that at a "bookshelf" height (on top of a pair of K'horns), they need to be placed well into the corner, and dependent on the room and your "listening" area, might need "aiming". I have two pairs at 8' on top of bookshelves in opposing corners of the living room and they work fine. Little real difference between the H-I's and the H-II's sound wise (IMO), major differences are in the construction, different driver #'s, and driver placement on the motor board. Unless you take off the grill..., you'll not really see any difference... H-I's are, however, easier to work with for such things as accessing the crossovers for recaps (generally required if older than 20 years...); H-II's really need new gaskets if you pull the drivers, and personally, I think the original E crossover is/was better than the H-II's. If you get a pair of used Heresy's, you should also consider that you might want to refinish them at some point; and the Heresy's (I&II's) are solid plywood, not MDF, and thus take to staining or veneers much easier. Hope that helps, and good luck in your search.
  9. Agree on Heresy's, or KG's, you might find a pair of "cosmetically" challenged Heresy's, but otherwise "sound fine" pair on eBay. You have to look every day though, sometimes good "deals" posted there slip away fast. You do need to increase your "budget" though, about $100 to find something that's going to work well.
  10. Sympathy for the Devil Boudoir Stomp (with Ry Cooder on the Jammin with Edward LP) Blow with Ry (with Ry Cooder on the Jammin with Edward LP) Turd on the Run (Exile on Main Street) Ventilator Blues (Exile on Main Street) Satisfaction (original 63' 45rpm cut) Hear Me Knocking... Of course!!! Rest depends on (1) quantity and quality of the beer.... and (2) my wife's mood to tolerate the volume required to make it sound right....
  11. At the expense of "lowering the bar" even further by even mentioning this old SS stuff, I use individual Sansui AU-919's, rated at 110 WPC, 0.008 THD and IMD, for three pairs of K's and a pair of LaScala's in the HT room and the home office (listening room). However..., that being said, how one maintains SS amps (just like the tubes...), can play a large role in their reliability and sound quality. I'm the original owner of these amps, and have consciously made sure that every 2-3 years or so, that all controls, relays, etc. are cleaned; all pots, caps and diodes in the pre-amp section are checked and replaced if they are not to the exact (or better) factory specs. I also adjust the offsets, power supplies, idle current, rails, etc. The 919, IMHO, unlike probably most of the "run of the mill" consumer oriented SS's produced, is a very, very "flat" response amp; it's made without any loudness switch, etc., and if properly maintained is a very reliable, and fairly powerful amp. Only mods I've made are Dayton gold speaker terminal jacks/ binding posts, and a top chassis mounted 5" high volume cooling fan (very quiet but powerful). Wire runs are less than 12', all CL3/ 12/2 wire, and the speakers all have an inline fuse. The K's and LS's have Bob Crites AA's (my old ears need no more...), and the overall system certainly makes me happy! Do they sound good? Yes, they really do. Would I like tubes, yes, and eventually I'll go for Juicy Music when my kids graduate and move out of the house... MWM

  13. Outstanding!![] Recording the LP's, and/or just "moving them around" the forum is a neat way of sharing the collective wealth! Good luck with your project! I hope yours are not "scattered" between "bins" with the "lists" missing like mine are!! And let never be said that Ted Nugent (and the Amboy Dukes...) was not a collector's item for the nascient metalhead precursors...[]
  14. Can't remember![] It was in a post a day or so ago, and included a phone number to a "Dave", I think, maybe? I'm going crazy[8-)] trying to remember because I'd like to see if that company has the brown version as well; Klipsch does not have it anymore, and one of my K'horns has the factory brown, and one of the Heresy's, and I'd look to look at brown (WAF) for the living room for the other Heresy's. Anybody help?
  15. On the inspection sticker, at the bottom, what's the "copyright" date in the Klipsch company information, etc.? That could also help by putting you in the ballpark on the dates. Also, check the mid driver; there's likely a date code stamped on a metal "sticker" on many of the earlier K-55's; that might also narrow it down. Sometimes, the assembler wrote the serial number and date (in pencil) of assembly on the inside of the bass compartment. I've found that several times on Klipschorn's and on my LaScala's. That would require taking off the panel, new gasket, etc.
  16. H-I's it is. They are in minty condition and I've "steam" cleaned them. I'll be bringing them with me to LR on the 27th of December when I visit family. Per your email, I'll call you when "I git thar". Note: For DIY. Obtain some Dura Crest Fabrics # 17 black and simply making your own. It's not that difficult; all you need is a thin (1/16") piece of black flexboard, some circular velcro "spots" from Walmart, a router, or small jigsaw. There is also post on the Forum, I just cannot remember where, that has the phone number for the folks who sell the Dura Crest "spec" cloth. The emblems can be had from Klipsch Parts for about $4-$5 (don't recall exactly).
  17. .206, but now what do I do with all the extra rubber boots...[]My favorite one winked at me but she wouldn't run [6]
  18. M'already retarded[], oh, yes, the laquer stuff, Yup, use that too.... Right now, humidity outside the building is 92%, and it's not raining.... And I've got to do a transom repair on one of our rescue boats. Oh well... Gotta wait until next week until it gets down below 80%. It's really bad down here sometimes.
  19. Dunno', Everytime I see his collection, I get them' real cold chills just thinking about the myriad of great possibilities involving lotsa' Sam Adams, bunch of my rowdy friends, the back porch, pool and back yard. Then my wife comes in and slaps me back into some strange reality. There's also the "other" Klipschorn's in the garage underway on a restoration. Those will go into opposing corners in the living room. They gotta look real nice though, per WAF.

  21. Absolutely agree with Chris (Popbumper) on laquer being forgiving (I know from experience...); and when doing it by hand with a block, 180 is relatively fast and accurate. When I use an orbital, I'm just less "aggressive", thus the 200+ grit. Key thing though, as Chris said, is you must do the entire surface. We have serious humidity issues here in the "swamps", so we have to be very careful about water/clumping, etc. General suggestion for folks starting to spray: keep the lids on cans, only put as much in the cup that you will use; and clean up the spray gun very well after using. Chris also brings up a very good point for the DIY when starting to spray stuff. Folks new to spraying should practice with the gun they will use on a piece of scrap plywood to get the hang of it. Chris: Thanks for the helpful advice to him (and for all of us)! Your work is absolutely first rate!; On the Heresy project, Bob Crites posted a photo of the Corwall's that you did for him,. Eventually I hope I can learn how to do that! Amazing work!
  22. Why not... I'm remodeling and getting ready to build a new house so I'm just stuck with having to listen to this stuff..... "Thwack Factor" is there if required. Believe it or not, it works, and actually sounds fine. Amps are 3 x mint AU-919's maintained by Warren Bendler's shop; TASCAM CC-222 MkII, Technics SL-1200 MKII (Thorens finally died..) with a Shure M97EX at 1 gram; ESSC Super Connector, AX-7 to bring it all together and distribute it evenly, an AT-15L to wake it up at 0:dark 30 in the mornin'; a nice Samsung 32 LCD; all speakers protected with in-line fuses, and whole system protected at the wall by Fuhrman Rack Riders. Speaker cabling is CL3 rated 14 gauge; connectors are GL audio. Living room (not shown) has a 50" plasma, two more 919's and two more pairs of Heresy's (gotta keep the wife and the kids happy and out of my home office...)
  23. Do you have, or can you borrow an random orbital sander? If so, go to www.onlineindustrialsupply.com for some pads. If not, these sanders are not that expensive; I use a DeWalt DW 26451, which takes the "velcro" or "hook and pile" pads. It's a neat tool, and right after I got it, my wife gave me "the look", so I ended up doing my son's dresser cabinet and other stuff on the WAF list before even getting close to the Heresy's. Home Depot, Lowes, etc' has them fairly cheap, Good source also for the tools is www.maxtools.com . Theyve been of immense assistance to me on my "projects". On the sprayers.... For speaker cabinets (unless it's a godzilla...), check out DeVilbiss "finishing" guns, they are high end but will last you forever (all metal construction); and it was the best couple of bills I ever spent. I've used it for just about everything that otherwise I'd end up buying spray cans and doing a crappy job. It's sorta like audiophile stereo equipment though, once you get the gun, you gotta have a good compressor, gotta have the spare nozzles for the latex to paint the bedroom walls to make the WAF level ok, etc., etc., and it just goes downhill from there. Oh well, a good table saw capable of accurately and reliably doing furniture grade wood (speakers??) can cost as much as a Juicy Music Blueberry Extreme... Hope that helps.
  24. Speakerfritz is an absolutely outstanding Forum Member[][li]; Thank you very much for making this active again; I'm sure many of the newer members like myself will find this very useful, and fascinating!! x 2!! BRAVO ZULU/Well Done!!!!!!
