  1. Ok, picked up some Weldbond after work today, and applied it to the problem area. I didn't like how crumbly the surround was getting and I couldn't find any foam backed adhesive anywhere, so I decided to get creative. I requisitioned some used dryer sheets and coated them with glue, then applied them over the torn surround areas. I thought it was brilliant.... guess we'll find out tommorow.
  2. Thanks for the tips guys, I'll give a go at repairing the original before attempting to replace it. I've went ahead and removed the driver from its enclosure. Is weldbond the only thing I should use or would something like gorilla glue or loctite be appropriate as well? Sorry for all the annoying questions, this is my first attempt at DIY speaker repair.
  3. Thanks for keeping us grounded in reality, jacksonbart. []
  4. Yeah, it's looking like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and replace the surround. That kit is not a bad price at all. Thanks for the link, Ace.
  5. The best way to add a single picture is to click on the "options" tab and then click on the file attachment browse button, and paste in the file name you originally wanted to show.
  6. That's not a very accurate representation. On closer inspection is appears that the damage is a bit larger than I had originially thought. Unfortunately it looks like the surround is torn. []
  7. Hey guys, I've searched the forum but didn't find any info that really related to the problem that I'm having. I bought a Velodyne VA-1512 from HudsonValleyNoah about six months ago, and just tonight during a bass-heavy listening session, a 2" portion of the foam surround detached from the cone, causing an extremely loud flapping noise. I'm not surprised it happened, the sub was built in 1997 and I was flogging it fairly heavily. I'm hoping a full surround replacement isn't needed. Anybody have ideas on how best to cheaply and effectively repair it? I can take a picture if it helps, but I figure it's a pretty self-explanatory situation.
  8. Let us know if you hear those Focal Utopias... I've always wanted to hear those monsters.
  9. I assume my youth is causing me to not understand what anyone is talking about.
  10. I'm willing to bet that you will always "notice" a difference with different recievers, whether that difference is a good one or not remains to be seen. Around here we usually recommend that you take a close look at the listening room before switching out any electronics, specifically because a "live sounding" listening room can be made to sound worse when you throw more power/SPL at it. On the electronics side, I would put my money on using a system of seperates, which can be done for not too much more than your original budget. Integra does indeed make some nice units, especially their Preamp/Processors (which feature all sorts of video wizardry and Audessey MultEQ, etc.). This would then allow you to get a seperate outboard amp, which will afford you much more headroom than 99% of the recievers available. I personally think Emotiva has a hard-to-beat deal in their XPA-5 amplifier, which can be had for under $1K, but there are hundreds of other good brands and models out their to choose from. It would also help to know which speakers you are currently using. Hope that helps!
  11. HTPC = Home Theater Personal Computer
  12. Nice to see you posting again, Bill. That's a nice TV, and the best price I've seen on it so far.
  13. I couldn't get into it... I currently am addicted to Farmville. So very pedestrian of me!
  14. Nice and clean looking, bailz. How does that center sound so low to the floor?
  15. Shut up and get them, you will be happy with them! [] I own the 82s. They aren't the sleekest, highest quality speakers I have ever touched. The P-39Fs were. But they are in no way "cheap" feeling. I've never torn my speakers open, as that would void their warranty, but I am convinced that they are sufficiently braced inside. I did the classic "Nickel test" when I first got them, by placing a nickel on edge at the very top of the speaker, as far foward as possible. I played a bass heavy song at a VERY generous volume level for several minutes and the coin didn't so much as quiver. I put the nickel on a nearby bookshelf, and it fell in less than 5 seconds. How's that for sturdy?
  16. The main difference between the Image X10 & X5 and the S4 is that the X10 and X5 use an armature-type driver to produce sound, while the s4 uses a type of "micro-speaker." I have the Custom-3s, which use the armature-type driver. I have not heard the S4s, so I can't say just how big the difference is. I can say that my Custom-3s are far and away the clearest, cleanest-sounding IEMs (or any type of headphone, for that matter) that I have ever owned.
  17. That's yet another path to go down, arguably more effective than electronics or cable switching, but I would still hold that the room itself makes a bigger difference to the overall sound of a speaker, regardless of the size or type.
  18. Just throwing this out there, but you might attempt to perform some acoustic room treatments to cut the "edge" off of those RF-7s, before spending $260 on an XLR cable or swapping out all kinds of electronics. Very often people will say that Klipsch speakers sound "harsh" or "bright" when in fact it is simply the room interfering and causing havoc on your ears. It's not like accuracy of reproduction necessarily comes easily, right? [*-)]
  19. What other subs have you compared it against to come to that conclusion?
  20. I agree, that size comparison is quite hilarious. If I was put in that situation though, I would keep the Bo$e system connected. Then when I had people over to watch a movie, I would turn on the acoustimass and ask them what they thought of my speakers... then I would switch to the Klipsch and ask them "Now what do you think?" 21. LED backlighting, in my opinion, is a significant improvement. If given the opportunity, compare a CCFL (conventional backlight) LCD to an LED unit. Black levels and depth of color are substantially improved, in general. Samsung has a gorgeous model out, the UN55B7100. Nice size and great picture for a little over or under 3K, depending upon where you shop. Sony has their XBR8 line, which I have not gotten an opportunity to see. Everyone says it's the bee's knees. Expect to pay around 4-5K for the 55", however. The best solution, as far as I can see would be to snap up one of the last Pioneer Elite Kuro plasmas before they go bye-bye. PQ is pretty much unrivaled. Let us know what you think.
  22. Willy, you're quite the home-spun iron chef. Where do you get all of your ideas from? That frittata made the ol' tummy grumble. I, for one would love to try me a slice of this: http://www.bbqaddicts.com/blog/recipes/bacon-explosion/ Vegetarians, healthy people, women and children, look away.
  23. Alex, without having heard that Hsu Ventriloquist system, I feel confident in saying that any speaker that can be keyhole-mounted to a wall is going to be at least a thousand light-years behind in performance from an all-heritage theater. I'm sure it probably sounds nice, but I'm willing to bet that it would noteven begin to approach the level of visceral sound and amazing dynamics that an all heritage-system is capable of. Just my $.02
