  1. You're my hero. Dtel, we waved on our way back from Perdido Key this afternoon where we frolicked among the tarballs and got in touch with our inner mullets at the Florabama Lounge.
  2. Two things: Klipschorn bass can sound lean for several reasons. It lacks the distortion common on direct radiator drivers. Because of horn loading, the bass won't slam you directly in the chest. It's there, in spades. It's so clean it may sound lean. Also, walk around the room. Usually there are spots where deep bass doesn't show up and other spots where it's a bit out of control.
  3. Those are doubtless factory Klipschorns haling from, IIRC, 1980. What those numbers don't tell us is the veneer variety and the finish. Have you listened? They'll sound fabulous.
  4. Coupla observations... Taking the test as described (well above background noise but not uncomfortably loud) and using the Image IEMs the midband rested almost halfway up the scale. On 16khz there's almost no there there. I had to bump it to about 5 notches from the top. I could barely hear it, yet it hurt a bit. The last 3 bands down low curved up gently, two steps at a time. When retaking it for threshold, I was surprised that most of the bands were easily audible a -90db, except the 1kh, which needed -87 db. The frequency extremes needed a bit more boost to break the threshold. Age...
  5. Neat. Later, I'll try it with my Klipsch Image IEs. That will give me greater isolation than quoted as normally possible. I figure that at 55, I'll have a curvy curve that is curvaceous.
  6. I'll echo the preceeding and say "great account, well-told", Dave. Besides several fine readings of the New World, I also have a recording of the daring Kazuhito Yamashita performing his impossible arrangement/reduction of the entire symphony on solo classical guitar. No overdubs, natch.
  7. The opening track of the Telarc Time Warp recording will give any speaker a good workout. Hearing protection is recommended for some of the nasty high content. The organ pedal that opens the ensuing Also Sprach Zarathustra will max out the bass capabilities of just about any speaker. While direct radiators can do deep bass powerfully, the continuous demand of that pedal will gas most of them. Klipschorns like it.
  8. Speaking of turkeys, it's time for me to trot out my famous BBQ turkey recipe...yet again. First split the turkey in half, bilaterally of course. Saute in butter diced onions, garlic, bell pepper, celery & parsley with a pound of diced andouille sausage. For ease, get a pint of already cut up "creole seasoning vegetables". Now, cut deeeep pockets in the breasts and thighs. Stuff with the saute mix. Stuff some more under the skin. Reserve the remaining saute mix. Wrap each turkey half separately with at least 4 layers of large heavy duty aluminum foil. Place both on grill, bone side down. Meanwhile, combine the remaining saute mix with a small can of frozen limeade concentrate and a bottle of your favored BBQ sauce but NOT, please, KC Masterpiece or similar. The dark caramel sweetness clashes with turkey. Something like Stubbs original works great. After one hour, turn the halves over, open the foil, and pour BBQ sauce mix into each half and reclose as best you can. 30 more minutes and it's done. No need to carve. You'll be able to pull the bones out by hand. Excellent, succulent, decadent and fast. Folks will FALL on it.
  9. I do, how much do you charge per tube? If it's not too many, just the price of shipping...at least while I still think it's fun. What do you have in mind?
  10. LaScala or Belle. With patience you can find a single LaScala for pretty small dineros.
  11. Well the 600A didn't work. He had loaned to a friend who has a recording studio. Plugged it in this morning and no go. HOWEVER, his much nicer, unbelievable condition 6000A does work. He sold it to me for $100. It is gorgeous, works like a charm and is fully calibrated. I'm happy. Anybody need tubes tested? [H]
  12. Somebody locally is selling a Hickock 600A for $50. He says it works perfectly. Should I? I figured I'd bring along a few odd tubes to test on it.

  14. Beautiful job and such a high level of organization. First rate! (I'd say Top Notch™, but that's already taken) BTW, we home-schooled and enjoyed the rewarding experience. We have at least one friend locally home schooling grandchildren.
  15. Excellent review! I can see how the confusing "H1" appellation by itself throws off the comparison section of the review. Nice to read the whole thing.
  16. Love it! The best ever was the Honda of Europe Rube Goldbergian ad. Voila! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkzr0naZnZ0
  17. Just beautiful. I like the contrasting trim. If you wanted to go full Danish nuts you could do a couple of those butterfly joinery thingies where the trim joins.
  18. A few random thoughts...great story Many ADHD people are intelligent and energetic. They would have been our leaders, inventors, entrepeneurs, risk taker, our 'get it done' folks of the coming generation. While medication helps some, others it just dulls their fire. These kids are a gift and deserve whatever it takes to find a way to live productively without meds, if possible. I like that the doctor takes each case on its own merits. We home-schooled too. A number of home school parents have been successful in channeling ADHD kids without meds. There is hope.
