  1. Kenratboy- I totally agree. There is a Pawn shop about seven blocks from my office and this guy wanted $1,100 for a McIntosh MC250 amp. Ya now the ones that LOOK like tube amps but aren't? I've seen these on eBay for no more than $500.... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  2. Sad to say I just had the real thing today and knocked out the electric. I'm currently on battery ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  3. Klipguy- See the reply I made in Home Theater.. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  4. Klipguy- I appologize if you already know this but here goes. The spike should have the biggest noticeable difference if your using the speakers on carpet. If the stock Nylon feet are used on carpet then there is the tendancy for the speaker to rock forwards and backwards due to the counter effect of the drivers pushing air to create sound waves. i.e.-A woofer moves out and adversley the cabinet moves back as well. Kinda like the recoil of a gun being fired. Now when the spikes are used, they intended to pierce the carpet and let the speaker rest on the hard floor underneath. Now that there is a more stable connection the speaker cabinet cannot rock back and forth as easily thusly pushing more air forward instead of pushing the air forward and the cabinet backwards. My 20's are sitting on hardwood floor so I didn't use the spikes; but bass-o-plenty when their placed in the right spot to use the side and rear walls to accentuate the resonance. 6. Just thought you guys would like to know. I havn't had the chance to poke around to see what their prices are like. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  7. Justin- Are you thinking of "School House Rock" from ABC Television in the 70's? Oooppsss! Just let the feline out of the burlap about my approximate age... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 06-13-2002 at 08:38 PM
  8. Although most TT's have a counterweight scale built in to the back of the tonearm you may want to get a Shure counterbalance scale for the cartridge. Most places have them from $17.50 to $25. >>Look here<< Good luck! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 06-13-2002 at 03:37 PM
  9. Has anyone seen The Seven Ups on DVD yet? It stars Roy Schneider and his unthinkably BAD Pontiac Ventura, well until it rear-ends a semi rig. There's alot of other Golan Globus releases that I wouldn't mind having!! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 06-14-2002 at 10:45 AM

  13. daemon47- Just about anything from Clearaudio will be more expensive than just about anything from Shure. My god! Clearaudio is making cartridges that run up to ten grand!! I'm using a V15VxMR and it doesn't sound that bad for under $300. It will definitley need some time to break in though. When you first listen to it it will sound soooo bass heavy. But after about thirty hours or so it will calm down to a nice even sound. It sounds better than the twenty-year-old V15V I was using till it finally wore out. Having a better phono stage in the current McIntosh C33 than what is in the Carver Receiver MX-150 (in storage) is also a step up. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  14. Anyone know if that mod is possible to an old Yamaha PF-800? When I first bought it new it seem to dwarf the quality of the rest of the gear but now I think it's being dwarfed. Any clues? I guess what I'm really looking for is an upgraded interconnect and maybe leads going to the cartridge. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit

  16. Kenratboy- Yes, we all adore Justin but......my thoughts exactly! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  17. The 500B unit should have the phono-preamp already in it. You could still use an external phono-preamp if you wanted to and run it in through a different input(i.e.- you don't want two phono-preamps in same input to the preamp). External phono-preamps usually sound better than the built-in ones. Compatability should not be a problem. The Fisher was probably intended for a moving magnet (MM) cartridges. So just be sure that if you use an external phono-preamp, make sure that it has the proper provision for the type of cartridge you are using, moving magnet(MM) or moving coil(MC). The voltage output is different enough between the two types to where they are not interchangable. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  18. So it's not Father's Day but the man is having a cook out with his sons and grandkids in the backyard. I started by cutting my backyard grass. Then after about 20 minutes Sheila came out to say that she wondered why I was mowing and that then she figured it out. She took the handle of the mower from me and began to finish the yard! Yea, Sheila!! After that was done she started to mow the rear most part of our yard closest to the same neighbor's yard. Gotta love her. In unison I began to play in the house Pink Floyd's "One of These Days" and am currently playin' "Dark Side of the Moon". Gee, should I just put that on 'repeat' and leave for a few hours while pointing the speakers out the windows? lol ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  19. O.k. so it's bit of a down-trodden movie but I like it. I really wish it would come out on DVD really soon! Anyone heard if this may happen? Other hopefulls are: The Wraith (early Charlie Sheen) and The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Omega Man (love old Sci Fi). ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 06-07-2002 at 09:28 AM
  20. Barbara Millicent Roberts!! I used to have my G.I. Joe's attack the Barbie house my older sisters set up. But Joe and Barbie always wound up being put in the same dune buggy for some reason.... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  21. Cluless- I did have that thought at first. But, a couple of years ago we were upgrading our electrical service (from 60amps w/fuses to 200amp breakers for 1,100 sq. ft.) when Sheila, me girlfriend, asked if we gould borrow one of their outlets for a flood light to see in the basement. He left us a message back that with their new air-conditioner he didn't think his house could take that much of a drain. This was in FEBRUARY! So not only is he not, well, neighborly, but he thinks I'm stupid as well. There is a silver lining to all this. His back yard (the biggest part) has just terrible draining. It needs to be torn up and have tiles put in under the lawn. He'll go nut's. Did I mention the service that comes to his house twice a week in addition to his labors. And the house is about 2/3rds the size on mine. "Gee, think he's trying to make up for something?" -The movie "Shreck" BTW- Are you anywhere near Caldwell, NJ? My sister lives up that way. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 06-06-2002 at 05:36 PM
  22. I got it!! Fill the mower's gas tank with nitro-methane! BOOM!!s> HDBRbuilder- Yea, a .50 Action Express or anything from SKS Hand Cannons does sound tasty. But I'm a svelt guy at 5'8" and 145lbs. But I'm hell when it comes to smallbores rifle. Dabbeled a little in IPSC Class C Unlimited about ten years ago. Got too expensive. (Yea right! Look what I'm doin' now!!) ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 06-06-2002 at 05:26 PM
  23. I have a neighbor that is completely over the top when it comes to mowing his lawn! He does it every other day. The constant noise durring my "relaxing time" is becoming un-nearving. Wait!! A blade of grass over there just committed cell-division! Cut them all to give the others a lesson!! You can imagine my point. I'm just on the edge of calling not the police but the EPA fro both noise and air pollution. Fortunately the speakers are on teh same side of the house as he. Here's what I propose. I'l wait till father's day and I'll either play some very annoying music (I have a disk from Nepal my brother-in-law gave me a while back) durring his Father's day get together when his kids and grandkids come over for a cookout. OR fire up the Stihl chainsaw and cut what's left of the firewood that I haven't done yet that is piled ten feet from the grandkids' tree swing. At last resort, and only as a nice thought, I could send a 22-250 Remington 55gr. slug careening 3,680 fps through the block of his mower! LOL Or I could be real civilized and suggest he get one of the old-time non-motorized push mowers with the helical blades. That is if he's really doing it for the exercise. Any other ideas?? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
