  1. I had Cornwalls for quite a while before I got LaScalas last Fall. I was surprised how different the synergy was between the two with some amplifiers. For example, I couldn't understand the excitement about the T-amp with Cornwalls but I didn't think it was too bad with the LaScalas.
  2. Hey, she got 100%! "Superb work! Best in class for sound quality and loudness." Best of all... she had fun and learned a thing or two.
  3. Can you get any sound (from ANY application) to play via HDMI or have you only been trying J. Rivers? I'm not familiar with the output settings in that application.
  4. Looks kind of cool! If she plays it loud enough will it heat my coffee or will it all just splash out?
  5. I think the kid done good! She tested different gauges of magnet wire and went with 30 gauge. She also experimented with different lengths and she learned to use the multimeter. Finally settled on about 18 feet of magnet wire which got it to 2.4 ohms and was the loudest she tried. Any longer was just going to be too unweildy to handle. The assignment was for ONE speaker but she wanted stereo.
  6. VERY nice verticals! One of my vertical pairs look like they have the exact same finish and grill cloth but they are one year older. Are you sure it says "C-WR-15" ? I would think it would be "WO" for oiled finish. Beautiful speakers! [Y] Buy from Appleskinner with confidence. I was happy with my purchase from him.
  7. I've been through this before with other computer models. Here's just a couple of ideas. My suspicion is that the HDMI on your laptop does not support audio. If you have confirmed that it DOES support audio then check your sound hardware in control panel and be sure that "digital" is checked under the playback tab. Of course, you will have to get it to recognize the device again first. Edit: I see that you mentioned Windows 8. I'm not sure how the settings are presented to you but also check the properties on your HDMI output device to see the supported formats. I believe this should be set to 48KHz.
  8. Whose project is it anyway? Bruce This really made me laugh, I remembered we (Dad and I) wanted to build a car for a soapbox derby. Needless to say it ended up where my Dad and his friends discussed how and what then proceeded to build it. I did not touch one piece of lumber or nail.^^ Kids and their toys!! Have fun with the project. Heh heh! I can be hard to keep your hands off but I remember building pinewood derbys with Dad as a kid. I didn't do much and the wheels were off limits. Dad must have know what he was doing because they won every time. Kind of a hollow victory but still fun and it was time with Dad. The science teacher hasn't done this project before so I suppose she is learning as she goes. She might find a problem if she hears from any parents about blown cell phones or MP3 players. I think this is a great project that a kid could take as far as they want and learn things way beyond the teachers' intentions.
  9. The iPhone app for the Squeezebox Touch works great for me! Gives me access to all the flac files on my PC server via the logitec media server application , MOG, Pandora... Sounds good without a external DAC but the DAC is an improvement.
  10. Whoops... the teacher won't allow any amplification other than from the headphone jack of a mp3 player or such other player. Guess we won't have to wheel in the Pioneer SX-1250 [] She will probably just use the jack on the cell phone. How many ohms do you think I should have her shoot for on that coil for her to get the most volume ?
  11. I need a new cup [] I tried the magic rocks but now it's crushed.
  12. Funny you should mention the wire! Happens to be 3 feet of Belden wire from Blue Jeans Cable that already had some banana jacks. I had this sitting here from when I used it to test some LaScalas I bought a few months ago. She already started asking about woofers and tweeters... next thing you know we will be building a crossover.
  13. My daughter asked me to look at her science project for school. I like helping when asked and was excited that her project was building a speaker out of a paper cup. She already had the coil made out of magnet wire and had taped it to the bottom of the cup. The leads were connected to some old ear bud wires and plugged into a mp3 player for a source. She would move the little neodymium magnet different distances from the coil and listen to the change in sound. When she found the sweet spot it put out a surprisingly decent tone. Somewhere along the line of the old AM transistor radios I carried around as a kid. She will have to figure out how to fix the magnet in that position. I suggested she try different sizes and materials of cups to hear if there is any difference. The foam coffee cup had a lot better sound but I suggested we give these speakers a little more power. She found that a Dayton t-amp was more than enough to drive her new DIY speaker. In retrospect, I should have shown her how to check the ohms on the coil first. She is going to try some different size magnets and magnet wire to listen for any change. We will see if she can figure out how much coil to get it close to 8 ohms. Of course, the cone material varies the sound quite a bit… Who knows what else she will find around the house to test! She is already talking about making this a 2 channel setup.
  14. Sometimes it is nice to know what NOT to get. I bought this a couple of years ago: Antec Fan I can see paying 25 or 30 bucks for this but certainly not $60. It does work but it is noisy on high speed so I only used it on slow speed. I did some temperature tests with a Yamaha CA-2010 and my cabinet which is open in the back and has glass doors in front that have a nice gap around the edge for air flow. It maintained the same temperature with the front cabinet door closed as without the fan and with the cabinet door open. I finally decided to just leave the cabinet door open.
  15. Interesting read! Far be it from me to attempt to throw rocks at good science lest the puny pebble that I could heave would merely ricochet and hit me square between the eyes. I admit that I don’t have enough redundant information on much of this topic to have a firm understanding of all the sciences involved. That said, it really bugs me that he says that our human vision of a limited spectrum of light is directly analogous to the audible spectrum of sound waves. I don’t buy that analogy! Sound waves are nothing like light waves. We talk about both having frequencies and waves… we even talk about sound as having “color” (which has to do with harmonics and nothing visual) but how sound and light waves move and their effect (or lack of) is completely different. It isn’t that I agree or disagree with the rest of what he says… it is just when I find a problem with a part I tend to question the whole. Most of us are chasing the sound that sounds best to us. If someone uses a higher quality master for the high resolution download or 16/44.1 CD most of us would probably want the better master version which ever that is. Thanks for the link! This got me interested in looking at this some more when I have time.
  16. I used dBpoweramp to down convert from 192/24 to 96/24 because my bedroom DAC wouldn't go higher than 96/24. Listening to both on my main system I just couldn't tell a difference in the single session I listened. I didn't really care enough to put much effort into it because I was ready to listen to something else that evening. I also converted from 192/24 to 44.1/16 so I could burn to a CD later and this is where I could hear the difference. I would be happier if I DIDN'T hear a difference! Then I wouldn't be tempted to buy higher resolution versions of some of my favorites.
  17. I keep seeing/hearing people say this and they seem so emphatic. Simply not my experience. I can't help but wonder if the so called 24/192 material that they heard didn't perhaps get up converted from 16/44.1 in which case I wouldn't expect any improvement. Perhaps if you tried down converting some true 24/192 material for comparison? I haven't had much experience (or need) as of yet to down convert but when I have converted from 24 bit to 16 bit that was the most noticible change. From 192 to 96kHz I just couldn't tell a difference.
  18. Open the garage doors and make sure your neighbors know you have them! [] I'm sure they would like to hear them !
  19. Very nice! I don't blame you on the price.
  20. I think you mean http://www.nittygrittyinc.com/Fi_models.htm. Those machines sure look like they would save a ton of time. I can do about 4 to 5 records in an hour with my manual method and that is about as fast as I can go. That isn't counting set up time though. Wishing you a speedy sale and your wife a speedy recovery!
  21. Actually, I don't think I'd change a thing with Cornwalls this new. It is all good! On the other hand, I really like the sound of Fastracs or maybe I'd like to try out eliptracs or Gregs' V-tracs (just set them on top). With new mid horns I might want a crossover that will allow me to attenuate the midrange so I'd be talking to Al K. The modification possibilities get expensive fast! At some point, you might as well build new boxes. Seems wrong to do anything to these nice speakers that can't be reversed.
  22. I don't think his price is that far off... maybe by a hundred or two. It is not a great deal but it wasn't that long ago that these were going for more than this. Bad thing is that I would wind up investing almost another thousand in upgrades. Maybe I misunderstood but I don't get why you would contact again to offer the same amount again... unless you were going to increase your offer?
  23. Beautiful cabinet! [Y] Tom isn't just a woodworker... he is an artisan! Woodworker, craftsman, and artist.
