  1. My version of the 4 door Family Sports Truckster: ^^^The side most people see on the highway when the wife is sleeping.^^^ The heart of the beast.
  2. Larry could play the violin (professionally) if he ever tired of being a stooge. I don't believe he could sing though.
  3. That's exactly what the wife said after I showed her the Klipschorn's I planned to purchase to replace my Cornwall's. So I sold the Cornwall's and purchased Belles. Now if I don't play them for a day or two she's plotting their quick demise. On a cold day she's also been eyeing my axe and I by this I don't mean a guitar. Fortunately, her mother's still alive so I can threaten to 'send her home to mother' for a couple of weeks.
  4. Welcome to socialized medicine. The reason many Canadian physicians train in Canada, practice for a few years then moved south.
  5. In my experience, once a power tube test's 70% or less its on it's way to tube heaven. Some tubes, like 7189's tend to not go quietly in the good night when they finally go. That makes sense. In trying to contrast the life of a tube with tire wear, I was actually describing the life span in percentages and not the testing results. For example, if a tube had a 10 month life span, it seems the tube tests as 'new' for about 7 of those months and when it moves from new, I may have about 3 months left. Of course, not in all instances, but it seems to work this way more often than not. Many older NOS power tubes with maker's like RCA, GE, Western Electric were built to last for tens of thousands of hours. For example I run a modern set of mono-block amps that use 211 power tubes. I have several pairs of pre-WWII GE VT-4C tubes that I acquired along with a single pair of VT-4B tubes made by RCA in the 1920's. These tubes were initially made to be used by the 2 way radios in B-17, B24, etc. US Bombers, they were also used in the British/Canadian made Lancaster Bomber radios (this is the bomber that my father served with during the war). These radio's were both huge and out-dated by the 1940's. One reason they probably weren't replaced with smaller units was the VT-4C tubes they used never seemed to quit working unless they were damaged by enemy fire. That and there were hundreds of thousands of VT-4C tubes made and sold to the air force as spares.

  7. I've got a tube tester or two that were resident in a couple of tube manufacturing plants in their heyday's of the mid 1950's to mid 1960's but I'm up on the moon from where you are. I suspect that you can find someone closer and cheaper to ship too. As to hours on tubes, I keep detailed records on every power tube and every expensive non-power tube I've owned in an Excel Spreadsheet except for one tube amplifier at a 2nd residence. The WE396 is a long lasting tube but if yours is dated 1948 I suspect it was most likely a pull from some WE telephone or signal equipment. That tube was optimized for voiced communication.
  8. I'm thinking no way unless your outlet power is way over 120VAC. If it was a power tube on an old 1960's era amp maybe but not on a modern piece of tube equipment. That said, the WE 396a tube is a long lasting tube. Have you got an idea of how many hours on this particular tube or the date code off of it?
  9. Speaking of candy, I found these online for my 200th anniversary of the battle of Waterloo Party and the damn things are addictive:
  10. I would say that any electrical wiring job that doesn't end with electrocution should be deemed as a success. Especially if you're not a electrician.
  11. me too... Not me. I like having all of my fingers intact and attached.
  12. Purchased one like this in June 2006 to drive north up the West Coast Highway: The above car is not mine, but it has the OEM hardtop and correct colour (Berlina Black) as mine which currently sleeps back home for the winter while I avoid the snow here in the SW Desert. i.e. shamelessly stole off the internet.
  13. Do these only fit Klipschorns without modification?
  14. OH MY GOD MY EYES! What was that green thing? I think I just saw Michelle Obama naked! My Retinas are TOAST! Roger That's the coveted Family Sports Truckster - perfect vehicle for hauling the entire family to Wally World. You can buy one from the Salesman Eugene Levy. If you're lucky he'll toss in a free sports jacket! Maybe the one he's been wearing. As to Michelle Obama, she's the black female I'd least like to run into in a dark room!
  15. Nothing say's class like The Family Sports Truckster and Cousin Eddie's Tenement on Wheels!
  16. Too bad Bob is so busy with his Klipsch related products business. I would have hired him in a NY Minute a few years back when my marketing guy retired. I don't know what he would think of a minus 40 degree day or massive Canadian style blizzard when compared to wintering in the tropical climate he's been used to living in.
  17. I had an email exchange with Al on XO's a couple of years back when I replaced my Cornwall's with Belles. When I told him my power amp used 45 tubes and put out 2 WPC he told me to get rid of my amp and replace it with an amp with more horsepower. I figured that response to mean that he designs and builds XO's for people who prefer to listen at loud volumes. I'd been there and done that with several amps I purchased years ago that put out up to 150 times my current preferred amp's rating. With Klipsch speakers I can use a 15 -20 watt tube amp when I want to Rock n Roll at high volume. That also requires the prerequisite of the women around here being at least a block away before I hit the play button. I believe Al designs and makes an excellent product but such product was no longer a match to my current listening habits.
  18. Unfortunately, we now have only one side of that argument. Terms like "absurdly loud" and "big" are not scientific, and have no engineering meaning. No one here now can refute the claim? Sent from my SM-T330NU using Tapatalk I've come to conclusion, late it seems here, that like Basil Fawlty, 'whatever you do, don't mention the war'. Substitute 'XO design' for 'war'.
  19. Order something: Some of these guys may have too much free time on their hands. Re-read the entire thread and decided to take my own sound advice and order something from a Klipsch after-market maker: Bob Crites. Bob, as usual, wins 1st place in the Civil Department. Even when he doesn't post stuff.
  20. Hey Wolfbane, We used to drive down and up Highway 1 confidently. More recently, we drive south by some other route, then return north on Highway 1. That way we are driving on the INSIDE, rather than hanging out over the cliffs and water, particularly in Big Sur. We make sure it is morning or early afternoon so that the sun is not in our eyes. My first time down was in 1965. It didn't bother me at all, and, believe me, plenty of drivers were using weed then. But now, we drive only north, because: The States may not be maintaining the road as well ... budget cuts. The heavy rains that will be hitting long-dry soil perhaps causing slides. Age (mine) Road crowding A friend's father's car was rammed off that road by an unsafe driver. He was lost. In another case, a woman I know wondered why her boyfriend didn't show up. His car was found at the bottom of a cliff. If you like Big Sur, though, you can go there mentally by reading Robinson Jeffers (The Double Axe), Jack Kerouac's Big Sur (or see the so-so movie), or read the fragment La Costa del Sur by Jaime De Angulo. Actually we are in Arizona now after crossing the 49th last Saturday. We decided to redo the 2006 trip up Highway 1 (north) on the return trip. We stayed the 1st night in 'But' Montana at this place after arriving well after dark: http://www.hauntedhouses.com/states/mt/copper_king_mansion.htm For the 1st time ever I was awakened at 2:00 AM by music playing instead of the wife's usual snoring. Got up in the dark to find the head and did a one and a half gainer face first into some pottery in front of a mirror waking up the wife. Relied on my natural cat like reflexes to grab the antique pottery crap before it smashed into the mirror. Escaped 7 years of bad luck but it was an interesting trip from there.
  21. You did him a favor Mrs.dtel. That man has real issues. The whole thread was a witch hunt from page one and its a shame we as a group allowed it to go on that long. I think there were many here like myself that wanted to chime in and tell him to kick rocks, but sometimes when you wrestle with pigs you're gonna get muddy no matter what. You and the other mods gave him plenty of rope and we all just sat back and watched him hang himself with it. Its a shame for him to direct comments to the entire community here as know nothing peons, but at least a few outsiders or newcomers now know who they don't want to do business with at all costs. Thank you Max. It's always with a heavy heart that I issue warning points, and even more when I ask for someone to be banned. That being said, discussions have recently been made about editing the posts in this thread. I'm requesting that the thread and the posts remain in their entirety to not only serve as a warning about inappropriate behavior, but also as a record of the way people choose to conduct their business affairs on a public forum. Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak (post) and remove all doubt.
  22. Warning points or no warning points: Online forums like Sandboxes attract children, who at times, need to packup their toys and go... home.
  23. Sadly I pissed away all my liquor money on fast women and slow mid-drivers. This means I'm going to have to listen to Ringo sing 'With a Little Help From my Friends' sober.
