  1. I would sell all but your favorite, assuming you still can get parts for it? Then try something different and ask forum members for a little direction. After that, make sure what you purchase you can always sell for close to your purchase price. Thats one of the funs with this hobby, listening to new EQ. Good Luck with your search!
  2. This is a very special person you speak of, you must be ok too......
  3. I will try not to make this to long. I finally received my amps back from repair, after what seemed to be a very long wait. Like all of us who persue this as a hobby, we all read about this piece or type of equipment, and more often than not, in our particular systems, many times, things dont pan out as expected for this reason or that. For the last couple of years, I have tried about 20 or so mid-fi, amp preamp combos and this is the best sound I have had in my system by a large margin except for one other amp. I have read that horns love tubes, but some vintage amps have many trade offs, in this area or that. I must say all of my fears of lack of bass, distortion, power, wooliness, and noise are completly gone. These amps do everything very well from top to bottom. Whenever I evaluate a new piece of EQ I try to make it as easy as possible. I use 20 or so very good recordings of many different types of music, and listen to very specific passages, that I have listened to hundreds of times, and then make my evaluation. These amps are so well rounded it is suprising. The bass is clear, strong and fast.with hardly any wooliness or decay. THIS REALLY SUPRISED ME. Of all the amps I have tried the bass is almost as good as the best . The mids are very well behaved and balanced and very natural. The highs are not as rolled off as much as I expected, they are very clear and precise with a delicacy that is hard to explain. Also these amps can image with the best I have had, and have that 3d, hollographic quality that makes you feel the music is all around you and not coming at you. These are WONDERFUL AMPS. THANKS TOO ALL OF YOU,who have provided so much sound knowledge, about all things audio, you have made my trek far easier than it should have been!!! Also thanks TUBEFANATIC for walking me through the tube amp rebuild process and putting up with some of my inane questions. Thanks Bill Lair formerly of Atma-sphere music systems, and TC tubes you did a great job!!!!
  4. RE: I just like trees. Bonsai is one of my hobbies and junipers make interesting subjects hence the name. I have had few that were worth more than all my audio purchases combined.
  5. This is not entirely unique to CD's. All source material is at the mercy of the mastering engineer EQ...records, cylinders, casettes...everything. The abscence of any and all stereo audio mixing standards gaurantees that it's pretty much a crap-shoot everytime. There's more variety available out there now than ever before, so yes, blatant differences in mastering styles are to be expected. Although, we don't have to like it. stereophile How does this happen? "Can't listen to most of them" because the music sucks; or "can't listen to most of them" because the mixes suck? I'd think after the first couple of mistakes, I'd have learned my leason. How does this happen, that I dont know! Mostly I assume it is the recordings, my space, my equipment, and that from what I have read some horns may need tubes or eq with solid state. Sorry I am not as up to date as you, dear sir, I like 2 channel the way I think it was meant to be. and this is just how I perceive it. As far as the music I listen to, I think it is O.K. Please tell me what you listen to so I can be enlightened!!! Also please tell me again how much you love your sa-xr 57!!!!!
  6. Thanks, that is great information. I understand now, why many times, I prefer older cd's to new remastered cd's. Some cd's I have 3 copies of and they all sound different, and often the oldest is the best. Maybe someone should start a thread about their favorite recordings, and the pertinant information, so others could find the same ones. I have only about 250 cd's and I cant listen to most of them. Great info Seti, thanks again!!!
  7. Speakerfritz, after my incident, I did some reading, and it seems that ebay often does things like this. From there standpoint it is brilliant as they hold peoples funds they make money on the interest. I found many blogs where people are very upset with some of there policys, some of the individuals have sold thousands of things with excellent feedback, and out of the blue, have been either restricted from selling items, to holds on accounts, to limits on the number of things they can sell per month. I hope none of this happens to you!!!
  8. Speakerfritz, sorry to hear your story! Ebay can be lame. I recently started to unload unwanted gear on the bay. I have a 100% satisfaction rating and recently ebay says that they are going to freeze my account for 21 days after sales. Reason, " I have a higher than average refunds" , which in total equals 1. This is after a buyer complained to me that a light was not working on a receiver needle, and I refunded him 60.00 dollars. He was fine with this and so was I. In the ebay photos that I placed it was clearly working. Next I ran into a flake I sold some NOS reals to, and lost money because shipping was over 20.00. He received the items yet kept telling me that he didnt, and was sending me daily messages that made no sense what so ever in broken english. Finally he admitted he had them. I think he was phising, because mysteriously, someone used my paypal account to buy something without permission, Ebay said we must of made the purchase and essentially stick it!!! Then he sends me a Merry X-mass greating!! Ebay is not very friendly to sellers it seems. I closed my account quickly.
  9. I live in the country and have this same type of problem and they love my jeep as well. My country bumkin mechanic says put dryer sheets in the corners under the bumpers. As far as trapping I try to use live traps, make sure you take them a good distance from your house or they will return. Also keep the mice seperated, different clans of mice dont play well together. Dont ask me how I know this. If you must trap to exterminate, I have found that the old school traps with the metal plate are the most humane and the most effective. The ones with the plastic plate never work once for me. They cant resist peanut butter, if you set 10 traps like this, 5 will be filled by the morning. Good luck
  10. For what it is worth? and this maybe very little...... I recently had some cables made by a gentleman in california that builds studios and has worked for and with over one hundred major recording artists. He boasted that his mogami cables which are nothing fancy or expensive, bested a pair of 10,000 dollar cables in a test performed at one of the studios he was working on. Everyone in the room agreed that his cables were better. I tried 3 pairs of his 2549 unbalanced interconnects with one of my systems. After I ran through about 5 of my favorite recordings they were yanked. Although the bass was a little tighter, and cleaner, the top end was to shrill, and my horns were vibrating more than I had ever heard. I spoke with one of my techs and he said that the cables need to burn in for at least 200 hours. I spoke with another tech and he said that is B- - - S- - -!!!!! It is interesting to note after receiving these cables I did a little research, and another site that builds cables described the 2549 as sounding very similar to what I was hearing. Once I dampen the horns it will be interesting to try these cables again.
  11. Wish I still lived in this part of the country!!!! Been to some classical performances met a few conductors, excentric types even more so than concert masters. I was a little scared once at carnegie hall, the conducter was in his underware, at the piano, with the pictures of some of the greats, all around him, in the conductors room. Like the seinfeld episode, at dinner that night everyone referred to him as "maestro". I laughed every time someone said it, to myself. Carmina burana was magical that night. I wish I could get my speakers to sound like many of the performances I have seen!!!!
  12. I agree with Russ69 completly. I have read in many places that cables or connects have very little influence on what we hear, my ears tell me something very different. Like Russ says synergy is everything and voicing through all sources is important to find what you are looking for!!!!!!!!
  13. Try describing what you are hearing that you don't like, and let the forum know, what you want to hear and like. I have been through alot of mid fi, that was well regarded, in the past two years, upwards of 30 pieces. Some very suprising results......not only may it be your room, some of this stuff is generational...... think of the bass that turned your head, and annoyed you, when you pulled up to a stop light in your car. I am sure the people who enjoy this type of sound, would hate my systems and many others on this forum. To give you another example, I spoke with a gentlemen the other day about chip amps he had a bel canto unit, his second one infact, that did everything "right" he loved it but something was missing. Latter his friend brought over an inexpensive amp that was 1/10th the cost and after A-B ing, the friend said thats embarrassing, not only is it not worth 10X's the cost, it has no "soul". This hit the nail on the head for this particular gentlemen, he could just never figure it out, or put it into words. Good luck with your search, remember it's the fun part!!!!
  14. Thats amazing!!!!! Wish there was some f-1 racing like that today, but the costs and the speeds make it prohibitive
  15. I didn't see that post. I miss his attitude, his wit, his knowledge, and a bit of balance.
  16. What happened to Duke Spinner? Hope he is O.K. I really miss reading his posts.
  17. Very cool pictures, I think that bird might be a Whip poor will fairly rare to see one of those
  18. I have not had so much luck with his offerings, but I have only tried a c-2 pre and a 700b 4000 combo. Although, the c-2 with Cornwalls and a yamaha amp sounded very nice, with the right connects might of been stellar for value. Very interesting person and true pioneer who thinks way outside the box.
  19. When it does happen, you will know the truth...but unfortunately it will be too late. It was a joke youthman, if you dont recall the person who started this thread changed the title, yes we all know its coming, in the interim. believe in global warming, cars can drive alot further, birth control is a good thing. "oil" is more than just oil......and we all can go on and on......but if someone whispers in your ear you may not want to listen...... you just might believe it.....
  20. Audible Nectar, it is like the rapture, except there is some of truth...
  21. Looks like someone put a wet spot on the front of the right speaker? lots of extra posts here, watch out, only important posts allowed..... those of substance===== and don't post too often...................
  22. This makes some sense, but I thought this was PWK'S dream from what I recall and have read? Wasn't the Jub to be a 2 way system? Now lets dig deeper. These are owned by the person that did PWK'S biography, commisioned by his wife, built by someone who has been mentioned in his papers or his patents? This model never came to fruition to the general public except for a different version, so badges and serial numbers are not that important. The provenance is though, history will tell......
  23. I think this is a great deal, I would buy these in a second if they weren't so ........ ugly. Of course you could reveneer them but then you would devalue them and change a piece of history. Someday if jubilees, get the recognition they deserve, and are as good as people say which I am sure they are. These will only go up in value. I have a funny feeling that Klipsch will discontinue the Jub as it appears to be a complicated build. Watch then what happens to the prices. Someone really should buy these, "jimmy was an oak man, you can be too"
  24. There a few of these type of amps in the garage sale section that were owned by forum members. I would rather buy one that has been in use by a forum member and tested than one that is new. Good luck
