  1. One of our physics profs. still has a couple of NeXT workstations that he still uses. They are dog slow at this point, though. I use OneSuite as a dial around to call overseas from my pc or telephone. For example, calling China is under 2 cents a minute. Why am I tleling you this, you might ask? They also have a FAX package. You won't need a modem. Check it out, I really think it will be what you are looking for. https://www.onesuite.com/products_OneSuiteFax.asp> Bruce
  2. Poo poo! Not necessarily a piece of cake, but it can certainly be done with a pretty good accuracy rate.If you can OCR the scans, and turn them into straight text files, you can pretty easily import them into MS Access. You can mark off the field lengths, columns, etc. It would be retyping all the names. If you would rather have it in Excel, you could export out to Excel. Access is easier to do sorts on without messing up the data. You already have a scanner? What OS do you have on your PC? The lists coming to you in paper form, I take it... Would I steer you wrong... didn't the pdf come out great? Bruce
  3. I have a slightly older version of Goldwave, and it can save as FLAC, Apple, WMA, MP3 and more, yada yada... Like all software, you have to take some time to learn it. Audacity was not software that I found intuitive enough to spend enough time with.
  4. Has anyone here who uses the Behringer done the mods to the analog output that were published in AudioXpress? I know a lot of folks on here use one for their active setup. Just curious. Bruce
  5. From djk: But by adding a simple two pole high pass filter ahead of the power amp we can now have a C6 with a -3dB point of 31hz. Since this is the Fb of the system there is no increase in cone excursion or distortion. The filter consists of a cap, an inductor and a pot. The pot allows adjustment at Fb of +/- 3dB. This is similar to being able to change the Qtc of a sealed box from .5~1.0 .If you think about it we have the choice between a D2,SC4,and a C6 in the same box by plugging the port and/or bypassing the eq. If you have a SET amp or simply want to get the most out of the LaScala you will want to upgrade the woofer to something with a lower Qts. The Klipsch K43E does the trick, as do the EV DL15W and the JBL 2205. The EV and JBL drivers require some minor network changes. The lower Qts drivers allow for an SBB4 alignment which has the best transient response of the vented alignments. With no eq they have 3dB more output at 30hz than the stock woofer
  6. Dennis, great explanation! Thanks
  7. Which also means loosening and retightening the connections.. Might as well do it the first time you take the backs off.Bruce
  8. I worked in the newspaper biz for quite a while. A friend of mine told me that they do all their photos at 200 lpi, which is really pretty darn good for web offset on newsprint. I worked at a paper that only did 85 lines! Newspapers are all about convenience. They don't have time to play, and even a 12 megapixel camera is overkill for the medium. Our college just built a new darkroom for students, and they can't get enough of it. THe teacher gave them a bunch of foam core and instructions and had them make pinhole cameras. They are doing some incredible stuff. It's magical! Bruce
  9. Well, Dean, I was just needlin' ya... []
  10. That's a pretty cheap shot, really
  11. There is an Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, and O'Reilly store in the small town where I live. They have pretty knowledgeable folks in all three of them, but it helps when you know exactly what you need too. Bruce
  12. They could have made a single 8 track head, and electronically switched the tracks. The speed was double that of a cassette. It wasn't an insurmountable problem. They could have made it better, but they didn't. Lot's of cart machines probably got sent to the landfill. []
  13. I mentioned in your thread about cassettes, that 8 tracks should have sounded better than the cassette, but they didn't develop it enough. After all, they ran at double the speed of cassettes. If not better, at least as good.Bruce
  14. I must confess, I did own the first Cowsills album. I had an 8 track player in my Volkswagen, and not near enough tapes. A couple of Firesign Theater, Emitt Rhodes and a few others. While the quality shouldn't have been any worse than a cassette, they were... less than stellar. Bruce
  15. This is sounding better all the time. I wish I lived a bit closer. []
  16. Charlie Haden and Pat Matheny / Beyond the Missouri Sky What a beautiful album...
  17. Michael, the CX2310 is one of their analog crossovers. As I mentioned, I thought it would be a simple way to dial in the crossover points that sound the best, before committing to the caps and inductors. This one is really inexpensive, too.
  18. What is HDTV? Seriously, I only have a 13 1/2 inch analog TV. I am too busy with everything else to even watch TV. I meant to mention, our college is seeling off most of the LP music collection. A lot of them are things like the Time/Life series. Idid pick up a copy of Charles Ives string quartets, but I left it in my office for the weekend []. One of the research librarians grabbed a boxed set of E.Power Biggs and the London Symphony. I tried to talk him out of it, since he doesn't even have a turntable. He is talking about getting a "record player", and asked is he could just plug it itno his TV. They could be doomed, but I am going to try andget them back from him. A few sets on London Records that each weigh a ton. They want t dollar each or two dollars for each boxed set, no matter how many LPs are in the box. Bruce
  19. Very cool, Dave. An historian friend of mine worked for a while at the EdisonHistoric Site in East Orange, NJ. Thye have a vast collection of wax cylinders, recorded on equipment at his studios. Lots of interesting stuff. They have a recordingbyt the actual bugler ON THE Bugle that was used in the charge of the light brigade. He said it is erie to hear it. Anyway, when he left, one of the guys made a CD or two of various things they have. Awesome historical archive. Bruce
  20. I had thought of an analog electronic crossover to get all the levels I wanted, and then make the passives to match. I think it was a great idea. So you built the bottom boxes with the woofers? Is that a little Magnavox on top? Bruce
  21. I believe rule number 3 is to put rags in a metal can...ATM = Acetone, Toluene, and Methanol These are the three primary ingredients in Lacquer Thinner and are used together to form a very aggressive stripping agent. ATM strippers are available with wax and thickeners to form semi-paste finishes as well as in forms without any of these additives.
  22. I can still hear 15k sitting at my PC, but I have a pair of AlesisMonitor Ones as the PC audio system. not sure the db level. The bass wasn't too loud, and it just sorta tapered off once it got above 5k. At 15k it's pretty faint and dropping off. I guess that's not too bad for 59. []
  23. They closed that airport in '98. I'm glad the new one was built when I flew into HK a year ago.
  24. Here is THE runway at the Macau International Airport. The one in Nagoya, Japan is the same way, built on fill out in the water. I came though Nagoya on my way to visit my GF, and got in at night. It was really clear out, and I could see the moon shining on the wing. All of a sudden out to the left I saw lights, almost straight out from me, and the same altitude. They were from a ship in the bay. Then, we were over the runway and I could see the shadow of the wing on the ground and we touched down.
  25. Changed your perception in a positive way? The HIII are smaller... [] , but the Chorus II is a great speaker, too. Bruce
