  1. We installed a couple pairs of the CA-8T systems in classrooms at thecollege where I work. The sound is really, really good. Not even driving them with that large an amp. When I started there, the one classroom had some TOA speakers. Then the school moved to some Bose, which worked, but I knew we could do way better. The next time we added multimedia to a classroom, I talked them into the Klipsch. Everyone has been impressed. You won't need the 70 volt transformers in them, but you can get the manuals from the Klipsch site to explain the wiring. Bruce
  2. Some certainly still prefer the K77. I found that putting the CT-125s in my LS helped the top end a lot, to blend better with the mid, and I still brought the mids down some more to balance it all out. If you try them, and decide you don't like them, they will be pretty easy to resell. Bruce
  3. Pretty good surrounds on those JBL woofers. They almost never wear out. Someone on the Altec Lansing Heritage site might be interested in them if you want to pass them on. My younger son is using a pair of L46 at school. Awsesome as his PC speaks, mated with an H/K 430. Bruce
  4. If you are in an apartment complex or even a duplex, I would look to see if a neighber is piggybacked on to one of your circuits. Wouldn't be the first time that has happened. Anyone move out recently? I can't imagine the sub causing that big an issue if not actually in use. I admit it is not s Class D amp. Is is being triggered to saty ON all the time? My sub was doing that for a while until I fiddled with the input some. Bruce
  5. Crown still makes them, three models for music. They have them on the website: http://www.crownaudio.com/mic_web/pzm.htm
  6. Terry, Took forever to get those cuts from him through my mail system. Still don't think I got all of them, and yes, they ARE smokin'! I would have loved to have been there too. Has Duke sent you any of his recordings? What are talking about with the Merlin? I've pretty much left it the way it came, but am open to some tube rolling. Pickin' up JC's BBX in another week, which will do me in financially, but I couldn't stand to pass it up. Bruce
  7. It was not taped, but filmed in 35mm. Cost a small fortune to do that. Woodstock was shot in 16mm. The band has been one of my favorites, ever since Music From Big Pink came out. And the Dukester send me some music of a friend of his, Jim Weider, who played in The Band in later years. Incredible player! I was all smiles. Bruce
  8. I gotta be there if Dean is coming. I emailed Amy that I will do my best. Have to clear a couple of things, but it is looking ok so far. I'll bring the Moondogs, too. That way we can really have a QUIET room.[] Bruce
  9. I would still opt for the Weldbond. It stays very flexible, is easy to apply and may run you $5. If you don't like the way they sound after that, buy a surround kit.
  10. They are the original Heresies, and not the Heresy IIs. Crossovers may need refurbing for best performance. If you can get the serial numbers from him, we can tell you the year they were made. If the labels are gone off the back, the SNs are stamped into the wood on the back edge of the top of the cabinets. Did you win these? Bruce
  11. Dave is correct, most ribbons are fairly low output. The Royers are rather pricey, and the Oktava might just do the trick. Don't diss the recorder too much. Friends of mine have done some albums on some low rent digital 8 tracks, and 99 % of the folks here probably wouldn't be able to tell. btw, an outboard pre might be a good idea anyway. The one built in won't be worth a flip. Bruce
  12. Was thinking the same thing, but we likes our guns here. [] Bruce
  13. I was talkin' with my gf online one night (she's never been to the U.S.), tellin' her about stopping in at a Conoco for some milk. I told her about the two young girls working there, and how they were carrying on, and was using their fdialect. She asked me what country they were from... I told her they were from Georgia. 14. The Merlin is a sweet, sweet preamp, but has no phono section. The only real caveat to using a tube pre with a SS power amp it the possible impedance mismatch. Most tube preamps have a fairly high output impedance, which will not mate well with most SS amps. You will possibly lose some low end due to the matching acting as a filter, rolling off the bottom end. There are solutions for that, just keep it in mind. A SS pre with a tube amp does not suffer the same problem. Bruce ps, I have a Merlin (which I intend to keep) and am picking up a Juicy Music Audio Blueberry Extreme in another week. The phono pre will be nice to have, so I can hook up my turntable once again.
  15. You can get them re-coned for a price, or you can do a repair on them yourself. Whatever you do will change the compliance of the passive, meaning how stiff the movement is. I fixed a couple pairs of JBLs by using Weldbond. It doesn't cost much, and you can thin it out a little and brush it on. If there is a crack or separation, you can use a small piece of cigarette paper to cover the gap. The stuff worked great. Did it change the sound of the speakers? Probably, but it also meant there was no air leak. Without testing, there is absolutely no way to know how far off you have made it. The JBLs sounded fantastic and it was nice to know the cones weren't going to totally come apart. Bruce
  16. I would say try some Royer ribbons, but they are going to cost too much. Beautiful mics though, and would work really well. Bruce
  17. Just sent a PM. I couldn't get one sent out from work today, as I just didn't have time. Bruce
  18. Gorgeous piece of furniture, Dave. I mean REALLY gorgeous. Bruce
  19. jc, thought I sent an email, but it was acting a bit funny. Am interested, but could pick it up since I am in LaFayette and travel to Mableton every week for church. I could drop by to exchange a check for the pre. Let me know the cost if you would lower it a bit for picking up directly. Presently have a wonderful Merlin, but could use a phono section. Bruce
  20. Gosh Mike, you are learning how to record the best that can be done. Do you think they hold back in the studio just because it is just for tv? Of course not. The composers are top notch, the recordings are the best, done in the best studios (ever been in a Nashville studio?) New York, L.A., excellent facilities, with the best engineers and producers. That is all I'm saying. I know it isn't the best when you are downstream, but it starts out as good as anything on the planet. Sometimes it hits home that way too... then it's magical.
  21. Since I have had my own tv off for the past year and a half, maybe not. I only know form having worked in around recording studios and knowing studio musicians, that the recording end of the process if not the problem. If the delivery system is lacking, there is the problem. The music is usually extremely well written (my mind is absolutely blank right now, sorry) and engineered very well.
  22. Neither one... I am saying that some of the best written and recorded music is for tv. How it ends up in your living room is a whole other matter. Bruce
  23. Dukester... what is the age a=range of all the Gibsons you've got ? (asking as I hijack Win's thread) And... I've been groovin' on the Jim Weider stuff you sent me. Then I find out that he played with The Band for a stint (one of my favorite bands)... gotta love it. Bruce
  24. I still have a JVC/Nivico ss amp from around '72. A really nice piece of gear... solid as a rock. It has some issues now, was nice when new. Bruce
  25. I would beg to differ about tv audio. Especially the music. It is some of the best written and recorded music you will find. Perhaps YOU need a better system.
