  1. I have an earlier model JVC (1972), integrated, with 7 band EQ. The thing is only 30 wpc, but weighs a ton. It is very well built. Those later ones have way more fancy stuff on them that the Japanese seem to like. It has some issues, but I can't bear to part with it just yet. It was the first good piece of gear I bought. Bruce
  2. I would keep the original crossovers. If you decide to sell the LaScalas, you can quote two different prices. With the originals and with the new ones. What are the Model 14s you are talking about? Bruce
  3. CTP, This is from the upscale audio website: "Tubes age in a couple ways. One is they lose emissions over their lifetime. In other words, they run out of gas. Or better yet steamas they dont just "quit" but lose their drive capability gradually. If you figure a tube like a 12AX7 or 6922 to be good for about 10,000 hours, and you leave it on 24 hours a daywellyou do the math. There are 8,736 hours in a year. So when did the tube go bad? It depends on how picky you are. Its like a tube of toothpaste. Kinda peters out at the end but it seems you can squeeze out a little more. Some products (and audiophiles) are more picky than others. I recommend to folks that want to upgrade to premium new old stock tubes that they do it while their stock tubes are good. That way you have the cheap ones working and available should you decide to sell the pre-amp." In other words, they should last a long time. Many factors come into play. Some amp designs have the bias up on the power tubes, thereby shortening their life span. Ventilation could make a difference, but probably a smaller one. You small signal tubes will last longer than the output tubes will. Mac amps are pretty easy on the output tubes by design. But enjoy it. I never changed tubes in my Dynaco from the mid '70s to 2002. There were times I had in on for many hours a day. I should have changed them, but they were still working. Bruce
  4. I liked the one about the Nigerian astronaut. It was TOO funny.
  5. Many tube amps (dare I say ALL?) get pretty hot. Enough to burn your skin. The output tubes will get especially hot. Had a babysitter lay an album on top of the cage on my Dynaco ST-70 once. Melted over the side. At least it was a crummy album to begin with. The hum... kinda hard to determine the problem there. How does the pre on the Pioneer disconnect from the amp section? I used a '72 JVC integrated to front the aforesaid Dynaco for years. It had little jumpers between the two sections, and I just plugged that into the amp. It had no hum at all. Is there a hum in both channels/amps? Bruce
  6. This is reminding me of the thread about the Heyser testing on time delay. What you measure and what you hear are two separate things. I have heard some great acoustic bass on a Fathead Newman CD, played on some LaScalas that was just beautiful. Without a sub, and on SS. Only using a couple of watts as I recall too. I would be quite happy with a pair of LS. Bruce
  7. A fantastic player on a fantastic instrument can be magical. I like vinyl a lot, but will try to pick up the cd for the ease of use. Thanks Allan.
  8. You didn't actually upload the photo to the Klipsch server. If you just did a drag and drop, it just links to your hard drive. Try resizing the photo to about 500 pixels wide and then post again. Use the file attachment window just below where you input the text, and browse to your pic. Nice price btw. Bruce
  9. Could be the problem. They all work differently than drawing programs though. I just haven't had the time to get back to it.
  10. Oh yeah! Clueless is one, and there have been a few others, but they have real lives to live instead of being on here. Bruce
  11. Perhaps the dime was added just to increase the cost of the amp. []
  12. DM, I had trouble with cadstandard. When I would save a drawing then open it back up the dimensions would have changed. Pretty wierd. I just dowloaded allycad, the free one they offer. http://www.allycad.com Bruce
  13. I do like the size of the Welborne chassis. At least you have a bit more room to work under there. The ST-70 chassis is pretty tight and doesn't give a lot of room for experimentation. Bruce
  14. David, Your family will certainly be lifted up in prayer here. Might I also suggest, that you look into a blog site, set up just from families with medical issues. We have several friends who use one, and my wife also uses one. Free of charge, with an area for your pics and a guestbook. www.caringbridge.org It has been great for us, as we can post info there and not have to keep track of all the folks we email. Bruce
  15. Leo, All but one of the ones from 41Hz are Tripath chip based. Those are really cool. Bruce
  16. I could quote myself about the degreasers (cough, cough), but I won't. They work great. I'm not sure about on the remote, but the amp itself would be fine. Take the thing outside, decide where you want the junk to flow out of and make that's the low corner. Spray from the high point down. You can also use with a small brush to scrub over parts as well. If you want, try on a cheap piece of gear first, to see how it works. Bruce
  17. They have been know to float in the air across Lake Michigan from east to west, landing on the taller buildings in Chicago.
  18. Man, something is wrong with the new forum software if that sounded like I was pissed. []
  19. I have worked on a LOT of equipment that used four diodes instead of a single full wave bridge in one package. Now I'm getting amused. One isn't any more correct than another. Time for bed. 4:30 am comes far too early.
  20. I have found that the Hersheys have a choclaty midrange. The Heresys however rock on low power. Especially in a room that size. Bruce
  21. I recently downloaded JustCAD, which is free. I haven't had a chance to try it though. You can see the complexity of a drawing and download it here: http://justcad.com/ I tried a couple of programs, and they were just too flaky (can't remember the names, sorry). Bruce
  22. I got my 730 for $100 from Jim Cornell and still think it was a good deal.
  23. At least you've got good knives too! Hope the foot heals quickly with no trouble. Bruce ps Always be nice to the cook... they know what goes into your food. []
