  1. The preamp out of your reciever is at a level that is too high for the mic imput to handle. Yes, even the SB may be better than the built in audio chip on the laptop, but not necessarily. If you are in a hurry, you can take some resistors and pad the level down for the mic input. This can actually work quite well. You need to drop the level about 40db. That would probably get you into a range that you could then adjust more easily. Do you know the mic. input impedance? I can generalize, and you can get reasonably acceptable results with the following, but details would help. in ----R1--------R2------ out / / R3 / GND (shield) R1= 50k ohms R2= 1.8K ohms R3= 200 ohms 1/4 watt will work fine. This a 40 db pad for one channel. You would have to wire two up (left and right), so you only need 6 resistors and the cable. Radio Shack parts would work fine. Get a 1/8" stereo to roc cable and have at it. This is around 2K output impedance, which may still be too high for the mic input, but a lot of cheap sound cards have a pretty high in;ut impedance. This is approximate, but should work okay. Marvel
  2. I've got some of the parts to make a box or two. How soon do you need one? Marvel
  3. Michael, 3/4" fir ply will be lighter than 3/4" Baltic Birch ply. The Baltic Birch will be much stiffer as well.

Isn't the reason the LaScala box is 24"x 24" to make perfect use out of a sheet of plywood? Michael ---------------- The last Birch I got was 11 ply. Unfortunately, a 48" width won't get you two 24" panels after you run a saw through it. Maybe close enough. You could try ApplePly , which uses 1/16" layers of Birch and Alder. Up to 1 1/4" thick. 5. These guys carry lots of great woods, at great prices. I am fortunate to have a store within about twenty minutes of my house. Pretty good explanations of grain, and cuts too. But you need to be in the East for this. http://www.hardwoodgroup.com/
  6. My son uses a GK 700RB head (two amps in one, to go with the biamp speaker cab), and a GK cab that has two 10s and a tweeter. The tone is excellent. The head is very light, and he has never even had the fan come on. I think he would consider it one of the best purchases he has made. Has a balanced DI built in as well.

While the outboard DAC may, in fact, be better, there are some on this forum using internal sound cards with no complaints or interference with very clean audio. My analog audio output isn't buried in interference. Maybe you need a better PS. You really won't know about some of these until you actually try them. Even with the external ones.
  8. If I had the money right now (which I don't) I would be getting an external firewire card/box. But then, I would be using it to replace my ADAT (for sale). Second would be an external box, holding the DACs, connected to the PC through an internal card, a lightpipe being my first choice. Probably with an RME card. The RME cards are incredible, latency is very low... Lots of options for anyone, even just for playback. Marvel
  9. The M-Audio card would be great. The impedance in running unbalanced isn't going to be a problem at all. USB audio devinces still tend to act up more than the PCI card ones do, and I have NO noise issues with my 2496 card inside my dual Athlon system. All you need is 1/4" phone to phono cables. Nice!
  10. Perhaps John can post some more pics of his LS... Trim added on the edges and a NICE finish. Marvel
  11. I own a rebuilt ST-70, and like it fine, but from all I have read, the SCA-35 was a combinations of all the bad ideas from Dynaco. The OPTs would still be good, but you would be building a different amp then.

I don't know where I originally heard of them, but I had one of their albums. It may have been their only ablum for all I know. Pretty different for me when I was an acoustic guitar playing Kinston Trio, PP&M, James Taylor kinda person back then. Marvel
  13. I thought he had mentioned that he was making grills to fit, which would hide the inside back section. If not, a flat black would work quite well too. Marvel
  14. I tried to find the link to JimE's post for his LS drawing so I could post the link. I can't find it at all. Sometimes the search function works fine and at others.... Gil, Did you ever get those Belles set up? Marvel
  15. I'm afraid that our Golden is named Max. But because he is a pretty big dog, we call him Maximus sometimes. It just seemed to be a name that fit. I have a good friend who's husband is also Max. She always cracks up when she asks about the dog. Marvel
  16. When I worked as a news photog in Memphis, we did a story about a woman who had lived in one half of a large duplex. She passed away, in the house. Social services folks called us to see the house. We never broadcast where it was. Black water standing in the plugged up sink. Dishes everywhere. Dog poop six inches deep throughout the whole house, with only a twelve inch wide path from room to room Pretty stinky! They cleaned it out and refinished the hardwood floors, painted. You would have never known... Oh, a lot of disinfectant. Marvel
  17. I apologize for my post above. I totally misread what you meant (not too uncommon for me ) Try single quotes instead of double quote marks. And you need to put angle brackets around the line instead of the codes for them (you put in ampersandltsemicolon on the left, etc, which would display the less than angle bracket, like this: < ). Marvel
  18. JBL has some models using a cone midrange compression driver. They are supposed to be very good. Used for live sound, they purportedly are very HiFi like. I would like to hear some. Or some of their ScreenArray models, using 6.5 inch speakers on a horn as mids. You know, the other company that makes systems for movie theaters. Marvel
  19. Having to do some termite repair on the house, I don't think so. At least not with these drivers! I am making some molds to cast some throat adapters for some Smith horns though. Although, as John Warren pointed out, the Smith horns have a large horizontal dispersion, which may not work well at all for a corner horns, given the reflections one might get off the nearby walls. Might work well on a Cornscala type cabinet that would sit in more away from the corners. B&C has lowered their price on their DE1000 a small bit, and it comes in lower cost than the DE1050. The DE1000 is a 1.5" throat (4" diaphragm) rated 500-20K. Looks to be about 92 db at 20K, so some eq would be in order. Marvel
  20. It's about $718. But that is list. Compared to what PE has the other drivers listed for, maybe $150 off that for the DE1050. PE doesn't have it listed yet.

Doesnt look like a 4in driver in the pics?? Wouldnt a 4in driver require a much bigger horn than the pictures show?? Is it a 4in cone driver or some type of dome midrange?? Seems very promising, cant wait for them to come out. These have the potential to be the best Klispch speaker ever made. They better put some decnt binding post on them and some decent footers for the price they are asking. i sstill cant believe the crap they use on the RF-7's. ---------------- They may be using the new B&C driver (DE 1050) a 4" diaphragm, and a 2" throat. List is 586 Euros. http://www.bcspeakers.com/index.php?sez=1&categoria=4&id_descrizione=46&prodotto=174
  22. That leaves out the new Atlas driver. So Dana, you could try this out (could be what Klipsch is planning to use on the Premire series too. Handles 280 watts continuous. http://www.bcspeakers.com/index.php?sez=1&categoria=4&id_descrizione=46&prodotto=174 It's 568 Euros though. They just sent me the new price list. Marvel
  23. Maron, I fully understand that. But a lot of people seem to be pretty happy using that driver in a two way. I am going to try it on something as well, and may have to resort to a three way. Marvel
  24. I shouldn't have sold the 3/4 size Gibson electric hollowbody for $100 with brown pink plush case, since I've never seen it in ANY of the Gibson guitar collection books. Marvel
  25. Big D, You might remember me asking about the JBL 2426H. JBL used/uses this one inch driver in some two ways they make, I can be crossed at 500Hz, with a derating to 20watts. Although still in production, and expensive, they can be had for under $200 each. PE sells them, so you could look up the specs on them. If you are crossing at 700Hz with an ESN, they should be fine.
