  1. and then get this external phono stage to start out with: http://schiit.com/products/mani I love the Schitt products, I have their bifrost DAC with their uber upgrade and their pys passive pre, great stuff made in the usa at a fair price. I haven't heard their phonstage however. The emo unit offers a slightly smaller footprint and equally as flexible with adjusting gain for MM and MC. It would give you 30 days to audition and I think a 5 year warranty. I'd imagine either option would be better than where Jim is at currently.
  2. You nailed it, the problem is the built in phono stage. Send the table back and buy a used one with out a built in phono stage. You'll get a better table for the same or less cash. With the gear you mentioned I put my money on the pioneer phono stage but I'd still recommend the emo stand alone unit for $150. I've auditioned it and it is really good. It stood up to my dynavector p-75 which is a lot more new, a lot. Don't give up on vinyl but like I said it is by far the most fickle and potential expensive dragon one can chase in the audio addiction. That said when its good, its sooooo good.
  3. The manufacturer recommends a tracking force of 2 grams I noticed. I'd try going to the pioneers phono section and set it to MM. Good Luck you'll get it there.
  4. Very Cool! Boxx was a pillar of this community. He will be greatly missed and un replaceable.
  5. just relised that face plate appears the real deal.
  6. Nicely done! Ive always wanted one of those. That dude knows whats up fo' sho. Did you get the specs off the first watt site, diy ? So how does it sound?
  7. I strongly second Thaddeus on the KEF LS50's. These are amazing! Im not sure if 20 watts will do it or not but I suspect in a smaller room they'd be fine. If you haven't heard these do your self a favor.
  8. Jim When you say new do you mean new? I've seen some great tables recently not too far off from your price range. Also my neighbor rick who you met bought a techniques SL 1200, i believe. He's happy with it and I think it sounds great. Pretty sure he spent around $300. Its a DJ table from what I understand and has good motor that gets up to speed quickly. I think due to the DJ reputation its been looked down upon by the audiophile community. The table you heard at my house in dec has been a lot of fun and a real adventure. From my experience the TT is the most fickle and with that the priciest piece in the system. Theres a ton of synergy at work within the chain. Table, platter, arm, cartridge, phono stage and depending on the table isolation. I audition 3 different phono stages and heard clear audible differences from them all. The cartridge you heard on my table is what I'd consider pricey but I did my research and it has lived up to what I read and has justified its cost. I did buy it with my table and it had been in use for a month according to the seller whom I know and trust. In the last day I moved my table from where it was when you were here. I knew that it wasn't in the best of places but it was easy and convenient when I first go it so there it stayed for 3 months. With free time over the holiday I rearranged and its like a new system. Its crazy how much better it sounds with vibrations being reduced. Its night and day. That may not be a concern with all table Im sure some deal with the issue better i.e. heavier plinth etc. Our friend J weber had the same table as I and made a comment so that inspired the change. He wasn't blowing smoke. Anyways feel free to hit me up if you think I can be of help in your quest I'd be happy to do so. Hope you're good and enjoying the holiday. Happy New Year! and its about time to get another chicaoland session on the calendar.
  9. I just ordered a shielded 6 ft cord from emotiva it is $60. I am going to use it with a amp and sound pre amp.

  14. if you're shopping around I'd also suggest looking at.... ampsandsound.com Justin Weber, the gentleman behind these products, is a great guy a forum member. I've had the pleasure of hearing his stereo 15 amp on my cornwalls and it sounded fantastic. I think you'd be very happy with his service and products. Good luck with your search.
  15. Happy Birthday Jim! Play it loud! or however the hell you want, its your birthday.
  16. I think mid Jan would be good. The only downside is if anyone wants to sell anything the crowd might be lite on cash after the holidays. I'd be up for a Dec bash too so whatever everyone wants to do is cool by me.
  17. here's the original thread that got me interested in pursuing this mod: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/149442-lascala-sonic-detail-improvement-for-only-22098/?hl=%2Blascala+%2Bwoofer ClaudeJ is the original poster and he clearly has a lot of knowledge. Enjoy the read theres a lot to take in and make a good case to give them a whirl.
  18. I haven't tried any others so I can't answer that but as I said they do sound great and in my case better than the stock part did and I don't know that they are the most cost effective but imo they are reasonably priced.
  19. Sounds like a blast! You think we should start thinking about another GTG with our midwest brethren?
