  1. Of those three I would take the Fortes.
  2. I believe it is the Barkhausen effect that causes iron core inductors to sound different than aircore. http://skullsinthestars.com/2012/10/01/making-magnets-speak-the-barkhausen-effect/ http://video.mit.edu/watch/barkhausen-effect-11295/ If this has this been discussed before please forgive me
  3. I think I was at the same show in 94. The Dead always seemed to me to have good accustics. I was at a monsters of rock concert in Germany(early 90s) and was suprised by how some bands sound close to a studio recording but others sounded really bad.
  4. Those are good prices and close for me.

    KLF-20 $100

Here is a good deal http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/vgm/4446263531.html
  6. Here is a guy in Huntington with 3 Heresy woofers for sale. They might be K24s. http://huntington.craigslist.org/ele/4435087749.html
  7. The cream is good but will sour if in my thermos too long. I use evaporated canned milk, nice rich flavor without watering it down.
  8. I dont move as fast as I used to. Better late than never. Did I miss anything?
  9. An open baffle is an interesting idea.... yet another option to explore I have a pair of K24s that are not in use and was thinking today of a KLF 30 vairant. The cab size and lower crossover design is already a known and is a good place to start.
  10. The woofer was not there so it will be only a guess as to what was original. The baffel has decent looking routed cut-outs for the horns which would lead me to believe it to be a factory board. There is a marking inside the midhorn showing that it is a HD-6...... then -6 is for 600 hz crossover. The tweet has a sn 33855. Above the input terminals on the crossover is the ink stamp 82099, maybe it is a serial no. also. Coming through the grommet is 2 different cables. One is connected to the tweeter. The other has 3 wires in it. The schematics I am seeing shows an L-pads in series with the drivers. So I'm not sure what it is for. Last night I removed the xo from the baffle hoping to see inside but the can has a bottom cover plate that must be pressed in. But not using the original xo shouldn't be too much of a concern. With all the schematics on the EV website, I will be able to build a new one. So that leaves me to pick a woofer and build a cab. There is a EV 15BW for sale in Illinios that is very tempting right now.
  11. I feel to have found this in a trash heap that was being sold as srap metal. I asked the auctioneer to seperate if from the pile and gave me a glare for only a $1 bid. When I saw the horn I had to investigate. I might use it for a center channel.
  12. Golly you guys are good here. That driver is a T10. Both it and the tweeter checks ok on my meter. I dont know what I might do with it. The drivers aren't that efficient at 52 db. Those EV speakers sure did cost some coin for the late 50s.
  13. I know it's not on the OP's list but no one mentioned Rotel. Is there prejudice against the brand?

    pricing

A pair of early Belles showed up on CL in north central Ohio for $600 and didnt last 4 hours, I was the second caller
  15. I found this motorboard yesterday at an auction. Got it for a dollar, cant complain there but I am having a hard time identifying the midhorn driver, crossover and perhaps what speaker it came from. The mid driver shows 10 ohms dcr.and the horn flare is 20 in. wide x 3.5 x 12 deep. Only the tweeter has a data plate it is a T35B. The woofer cutout is 13.5 dia. and as you can see the midhorn is wider than the woofer. When I searched google images the horn and woof looks to be the same width. And the crossover has more connections than I am finding when looking at other EV crossovers.
  16. Thanks for the warning Dave, I might be opening a can of worms. I have one set of Fortes with an upgraded passive xo with premium parts. And another pair that is still stock. I like the way the new crossovers sound now, much improvement over stock. But sometimes, not often there is an overbearing low freq. I have no way to acuratly test the them. I decided in a dbx Driverack with the setup mic. If that works, I'll likely set it and hopefully leave it alone. The pair of KP-301 are a recent purchace and I might let them go in the future. They are alot of speaker compared to the Fortes. I could move them to garage duty since they have metal grills.
  17. I have a pair of Tangent 400s (heresy 2 components) that I loaded the cabs with Forte components. I also have proper Fortes that will be triamped soon. The T400 cab is about 10 percent larger than the forte. I went with a solen recap and Crites Ti tweeters. That brought back lost details. You just could hear more from the new parts. I agree with Dean the highs were brighter making the percieved bass less. Later I changed the midrange cap to a mundorf sgo and difference between caps was slight to little at best. Now these speakers have Ti mids and I think they need a lowpass circuit added to the mids. The Ti mids plays to a higher freq. than the phenolic varity. Mr. Crites offers a low pass addition. Lastly I changed the iron core inductor for a 10ga. aircore and changed the stock transformer to a large one from germany. I believe these improved the bass in the areas of clarity, the size of the soundstage, and provided a more natural sound. Maybe I bought the wrong caps, but I think all of that copper improved the sound as much as or more than the caps. I keep one forte around with a stock crossover to use as a reference and no one prefers the stock sound.
  18. Thanks guys this is a great forum. I should have tried this a year ago when I noticed the factory crossovers were sounding tired. I just picked up my second Dynaco 70 sunday. I also have a pair of HK Citation 24s A Driverack PA was near the top of my list as it has more functions than the manual ones. That was a debate, I usually try to keep it simple and was leaning towards a Rane AC23 it is 6 channels out and has time delay corrections. Brad a PM is on your way.
  19. I have gathered enough amps to give triamping a go. I was looking for brand recommendations Rane? Peavey? dBX? Behringer? Ashley? I dont want to blow the budget used is ok. current have a pair of Fortes and a pair KP-301 II this would be for a home system
  20. Neil Young Edie Brikell or maybe P!nk Yes
  21. Hi Scott, I see you are in ohio. I live about 40 mi south west of cleveland. I have forte 1s that have been modded to some degree. Your welcome over for a listen. They have ti.tweets and mids along with a recap.
  22. I like Easter better now.
