  1. My first post here a few months ago was for help on refinishing an older Klipsch. The denizens here were extremely helpful, you made a good choice going here first for advice. Here is my refinish thread: https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/149241-epic-cf4-needs-overhaul/ In short, I would recommend sanding by hand with a sanding block, sand with light pressure. Use 120 grit to take off the stains, then 220 to get a finish to which you can apply polyurethane (by brush). I think Minwax will recommend two coats. Be sure to lightly sand in between coats with the 220, and let it dry a couple days between applications. Let it dry for 30 days after the last poly application, then do your final wet sanding with 600, use your hand, no sanding block. Use mineral spirits for the wet sanding, available from Walmart. It's explained in one of the videos embedded in the thread. This technique will take all the tiny bubbles out, will not take off the poly you just applied, and leave you with a really nice looking finish. The Minwax you choose looks fine, but you choose GLOSS. A SATIN finish will restore it a natural, factory finish without being shiny. I tell you that for information sake, you can choose whatever finish you think you might like. The Poly WILL NOT hide any flaws. Whatever it looks like when sanded, that it what it will look like with the Poly. If you want a darker color, you will need to apply stain. The sanding will likely take out all the stains and look great, so you will have options. Sorry for your loss, but the care you are putting into this refinish job will honor his memory, every time you listen to music on these magnificent speakers.
  2. Bump by me, to make it easy to find again.
  3. It sounds like we've kind of run out of ideas for you, but I don't think you should give up. It just seems like a crime for you to have such a nice setup anchored by the RF-82 II and every time you listen to it, it doesn't give you that GREAT feeling because you hear the gap in the sound, or null from that center. I'll open this up to the others, but can the XO be reworked on that RC-64? Or, can you open it up and try adding some polyfill which might lower or pad that midrange?

    Alex and Chad?

"Alex" and "Chad" is an awful lot of names to remember. Why don't we simply refer to each of them as "Amy?"
  5. I agree with everything you said. With the DIY concept, I am not trying to "sell" an idea, it's just when a guy has a real clear picture in his head of what he is looking for, THE answer is not always at the fingertips. I have played similar SEOS speakers vis-a-vis my Klipsch and I actually swapped drivers from one speaker to another. The sound was remarkedly the same, especially swapping compression drivers and horns. And I think I know the sound he is looking for. I also don't buy equipment for its own sake, I am usually looking for a characteristic sound. Similar to the OP, when dialog is going on, whether male of female, I want to be in the next room and really believe somebody is in my house talking. The exact way to get there equipment-wise, I don't know.
  6. I was thinking that as well, or at least some variation of that. Since he likes the sound for male dialog from his RF-82 II, is a third RF82-II an option? Mr. gtg90, how much space do you have in the front? Does this have to be a Klipsch center? I don't know about timbre matching, but I know of a DIY kit with dual 8's that is horn driven, that might be able to keep up with the RF-82 II's. It's called the 88 special, and it was designed to be a center in a theater setup. http://www.diysoundgroup.com/home-theater-speakers/88special-kit.html For the cost of about $350 you might get a center that would keep up with your RF-82 II's and give you that nice mid-range voice you are looking for. It has dual 8" woofers and a 15" horn driven SEOS waveguide. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/155-diy-speakers-subs/1533068-88-special-center-channel-build.html I couldn't post a pic here, but there is a picture of it Post #30, and Post #36 on the above link.
  7. Edit: Did your Yamaha YPOA set up your old speakers, and did you re-calibrate for the new speakers? +++ I would suggest doing some EQ on that center, and maybe some EQ on your mains which support the center, and see if that helps. Your AVR should be able to EQ each of your speakers. Here is the graphic chart on where instruments/voices show up in frequency.
  8. Yeah, great sport for Americans. We didn't score today against Germany, lost the game, and we're cheering the outcome.
  9. Sincerely, thank you. Very kind. Now, if the state of Texas will loan us some of those 5 star high school All Americans you guys have been hoarding...
  10. LOL! I met some Texas Tech people when they played WVU at home last year. I was in the WVU alumni band and we talked marching bands (they have a good one, as do we), football, hating Oklahoma, and more football. Real nice people, they invited us to Lubbock next year. They could afford to be nice, they tromped us. And we are double digit dogs to virtually every Big 12 team this year, so it's not likely to get any better for 2014.
  11. I've learned much about West Virginia (and WVU) since they joined the Big 12. And I have learned much about Texas, and the Big 12. It seems we share a bond of hating Oklahoma.
  12. I'm watching LIVE! also, 2-2 in the 7th. Vandy is the underdog, and it's hard not to root for the underdog. I know Virginia is playing, but I'm from WEST Virgina and we really are a separate state. You wouldn't believe how many times I've heard people say they like West Virginia, and have relatives who live in Richmond.
  13. That Tony Williams video does not impress me, speaking musically. He is typical of the set drummers who rams unaccented notes as fast as he can, but is not formally trained as a drummer. The accents are what make drumming interesting. There is no doubt he has fast wrists, but I find the continued use of singles a bit uninteresting. I assure you, anyone can do single stroke rolls. There are 40 basic rudiments, and he uses about two of them, single stroke roll, and maybe a few flams (a flam is a single with a grace note, then alternate hands) http://www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.php Here is Steve Gadd (from Steely Dan, think of his work on AJA) giving a master class on how to use a rattamacue in a fill. He is super smooth, and you can tell by the way he talks he knows music, not just drumming. His drumming technique, ie, the way he holds the drum sticks and strikes the drum head, is excellent, and drum tuning is excellent. Tune in about 4:30 to 5:00, and 6:50 to the end to hear what I am thinking about mixing interesting drum fills using standard rudiments. This guy is Smooth, a drummer's drummer, not just anyone can do what he is doing.
  14. LOL! Good call on locking the topic, Amy. "One for the road" is the way I will remember you. A true professional to the end!

    Epics on ebay.

Congrats from a fellow CF-4 owner! I have had mine for a few months now, and it is fun getting to really know new speakers with older recordings. My advice to get the most out of your new speakers; do whatever Moray suggests!
  16. Why was he trying to get out? +++ So many one liners possible, so little time, before the close.

    Save Amy!

    Amy is leaving Klipsch. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/150825-moving-on/
  18. Was my brilliant, witty sarcasm too subtle? +++ I know we are from different cultures and backgrounds, with different ideas about humor, but where I'm from in West Virginia, that's how we guys talk to people we like. I was just taking a good natured poke at him. BTW, I'm coming up on 29 years of marriage. How long do you think my marriage would have lasted if I took my own "advice" to Steve? I would guess, "not long."

    Dobly Atmos

I am voting "no" to Atmos with my wallet. I am VERY happy with my 5.1 setup, and there is still plenty of room for growth should I want to go bigger, better louder. I think the manufacturers are PUSHING new hardware on us because THEY need the money. That, from the guy who lost his shirt in the 80's buying Beta Max cameras, recorders, and tapes, and followed that debacle up with a $700 VCR with Zenith's new proprietary STEREO format that NO ONE ever supported. I don't think I ever heard one note in stereo from that piece of junk. Uhh, what were we talking about? /rant
  20. What, are you nuts??? How long have you been married, a week???? NEVER tell your wife how much you need to spend, they don't think that way. You have to talk the way THEY talk, not the way WE think. TELL HER the replacement cross overs are needed because the old ones are not safe, they are known to catch on fire, especially while you are sleeping. Even if they are unplugged. Then tell her they are regularly $1500 bucks, but because you know "a guy," you can get them for only $575, but you have to get them before he sells them to someone else. Tell her (and this is the most important part) that you can SAVE a thousand bucks, but you have to act, now! She will write you the check for that $575, and tell you she'll take over your job of mowing the yard so you have the time to go pick that safety equipment. Steve, go get those cross overs, now, before your wife leaves you for making her unsafe! You can thank me later.
  21. MLB is still two centuries behind. The DH is used universally in high school, American Legion ball, USSSA Baseball, college ball and every other league above little league. Nobody comes to the park to see pitchers hit. They need to adopt the DH in EVERY MLB park. And let's get rid of the balk rule. You can already fake a throw to every other base except first. Give the pitcher ONE throw to first per batter, and then let's play ball. And that stupid infield fly rule. They say it's there to prevent the defense from getting the "cheap" triple play. I say if the offense doesn't want to give up a cheap triple play, then don't pop the ball up into the infield with runners on 1st and 2nd, or 1st 2nd and 3rd, with less than two outs. I'll shut up.

    Epics on ebay.

That CF-4 and my CF-4 picture look alike, taken with the camera flash on. Mine is 1994, version 1. I hope that helps someone.

    Moving on

Thanks for the heads up. Very classy move.
  24. Got a name ?? the link brings up a list My Nephew was a finalist in the guitar center drum contest a couple years ago Guitar Center Drum-Off 2012 Champion Juan Carlos Mendoza +++ Iron Butterfly, not Deep Purple, sheez. I fixed it in my post, but I really should have remembered who played Inna gadda da vida. +++ I just watched the vid you posted for your nephew. Obviously he is working on a tune, and he is solid rhythmically. What he is doing best is NOT over doing it, because a regular song is not the best place to ram notes, which is what most of us drummers like to do, too much of the time.
