  1. Been building and riding Harleys over 50yrs. My suggestion is especially since you seem to want a Sportster is buy one then you will learn all you need to know. I always bought what floated my boat and never regretted it. I prefer after market big inch stroker engines because of build quality and incredible power and torque increases. These twins are machines you can get wrapped up in just like our quest for audio perfection.Good Luck have fun finding your new Harley.
  2. Just picked up a K400 horn with K55V driver noticed right away that the bore of the horn was a tad smaller than the bore of the driver. Right away noticed how clear with no harshness compared to the Peavey horns we are presently using. It does have a small bore approx. 3/4" wonder how different the sound changes as the bore gets bigger. Will be looking for another one.
  3. I'm all ears you guys been through this before. Way back when deciding on sub woofer for living room that too ended up being confusing at first till mother spelled out nothing to imposing. So many opinions with so many choices makes the decision near impossible especially without being able to listen to a few examples. In this case floor space has to be a part of the process and why BFM subs are one of the options, my ears will be the judge. I regularly visit three other forums adding to the confusion and I want to build the cabs.
  4. Still waiting to preview a couple different BFM subs before I consider anything what would their weakness be? My search is for a sub that will fit our floor plan first considered opening up the doghouse on our LaScalla's for the extension box, then the quarter pie but it has just too many square ft. Certainly open for suggestions. Mike Ross
  5. Just got back from a month of R&R and finished reading all the posts. Thank you all for your responses. I have a good choice of speakers to play with just getting the cob webs off everything and wanting fresh opinions. Plan on building a pair of Bill Fitzmaurice subs, to help our LaScalla's if that is the way we go. Also have a pair of Heresy's,and a pair of Peavey SP5's. Once the horn subs are finished will let my ears be the judge. Was interesting to read about the power handling ability of horns with 1" throat compared to horns with 2" throat. Our system is bi-amped with 125wpc powering the mids and highs will have to focus on that. Without a pair of 2" throat horns cannot compare. Mike Ross
  6. Thinking about mid range wondering what is more accurate horns or cones particularly in vocals or is it personal preference. Gearing up to build sub base horns thinking ahead a little to the mid-range and try to be setup to build cabinets for whichever way I go. Considering horns does the size of the driver make a big difference in sound example 1" or 2"?
  7. It is very difficult to recommend speakers because of how we all hear a little different and our preference in music. Suggest you preview subs for their size some are quite large, more important their performance. Then there is the option of building one of the highly efficient horn subs if you have the place to do something like that. Have fun in your search.
  8. Recommended subs for LaScalla's? same question here. This weekend will meet a guy who is bringing a couple different BFM subs a show he is doing the sound for. My limitation is space and hoping to get down into the 20h range. Actually our LaScalla's give us most all we need but knowing there is more to be had with longer horns and I can build them brings the teenager back to life.
  9. Will do, the weatherman is predicting a fine day. Living in Maine we all know you wait and see what the weather will bring the day of any event.
  10. See the "Been there done that" thread in the subwoofer section. These are being built to go under Lascalas. Sure liked reading about the track saw may have to look into that when the time comes. Those horns you had there sure have the curiosity juices flowing. Yes, the plan is to use the LaScalla's with horn subs at first searching for the sound and control of it. Also have Heresy's and Peavey's with mid horns I like. In the end will find the right combo, even if it means building more speakers particularly the mid-ranges. Next week am going to an event the soundman is bringing a couple different Bill Fitzmaurice subs for me to preview.
  11. One thing is for certain these LaScalla's with very little power sure beat on the chest cavity. Real anxious to hear the difference with subs that will get down into the range where the Lascalla's leave off.
  12. It's impossible to know what you're lacking until you hear otherwise. Were your previous speakers lacking? This is the biggest stumbling block when it comes to upgrading speakers, with so many choices and opinions not to mention we all hear things a little differently. Over the years have built a dozen or so pairs of speakers most all of them mulit range. Now focused on finding and building a pair of horn subs to compliment our custom built LaScalla Pro's. Will be previewing a couple different sets of BFM subs next week. After that will focus on the midrange using horns as well. Have to add that without the forums the search for the right combo's would be next to impossible. Thank you all. Mike
  13. It seems the more research I do looking for the best route to take for getting deep bass for our LaScalla's the more options I'm finding, even to the extent of building separate horn cabs. It would be so much easier to listen to the choices then build what will do the job taking up the least bit of real estate. My first choice would be the ported box for the opened doghouse LaScalla ,second was the quarter pie (really too big for our room) third is the Bill Fitzmaurice Tuba series cabs. The bottom line is getting the sub bass without filling the room with speaker mods or cabs searching for the really deep wattage hungry spl
  14. We just planted our vegetable garden pointed out to the wife where that sub could go. She says what part of the word NO do you not understand! ha ha. Our neighbors should be used to the ground shaking.
  15. How about Bill Fitzmaurice subs his has foot prints that might suit your needs.
  16. We have a pair of LaScalla's needing some help with deep bass and Bill's Tuba's are the way we are going. Am hoping to not sacrifice too much floor space. I need to let my ears be the judge and spend a little more time on the forums reading what you have to say. We also have a pair of Heresy II's and a pair of Peavey SP-5's that more than likely will replace the LaScalla's because of the horns. Once we decide on the subs get them built and in use will decide on how best to deliver the mids and highs.
  17. Check out his Q-Pie thread. Very interesting. I'd possibly be interested myself but need to cross over at 500 Hz. Paul Thanks found it Wow, another way to go for sure looks like they take up a lot of realestate.
  18. 1/4 pies are new to me and would enjoy knowing all there is to know. What are they, how do they add to the sonic pleasure? Have been toying with building a pair of WE SATO horns along with the ported bases and love the smell of sawdust.
  19. Without knowing what is inside my outwardly look a like LaScalla's and they sound incredible I might add. Before I dive into this project maybe it would be a good idea if I had a base test on their present state of tune. How do I measure the output to get this base reading?
  20. I know this is my own form of Heresy for some, but I have ears, and tons of curves to prove it. I have an engineering background, so I make no apologies for my opinions working against the industry's "emotional testing" the incomplete opinions that accompany those methods. You get what you pay for and internet information is free, so unless you prove it to yourself, it's all worthless, even from me. I only seek the truth. Those who have heard and felt horn bass and sub bass from an all horn system want to go home and throw rocks at their DR woofers. I tried to compromise also, but it didn't work. In the meantime, PWK said the "midrange is where we live" yet, even though the speaker measure OK in the range where the woofer section hands of the duties to a midrange horn, the response just wasn't fast enough to match and I'm trying to help people fix that for even greater enjoyment. My cause is noble. So many of us hear you but without actual listening experiences and knowing we all hear things differently it is impossible to understand. I for one wish it were possible to visit all of you that have such convincing things to say about sound reproduction and hear first hand what you are talking about. My custom built LaScalla bases (without getting inside them outwardly they are identical) am considering building bases and opening up the doghouses to enhance the base. I detect you do not agree with this modification, would enjoy hearing why in non engineering terms.
  21. Hi Full Range and thanks, It sure does help if it were not for the spring and summer season that's finally blossoming all around us I would be tearing into the Speakers. I'm so hoping my custom cabinets are true replicates of LaScalla's outwardly they are exactly the same. No matter I'm still going to build the base boxes and do the same thing you have done let my ears be the judge. The air ballons in the tubes sure is interesting, reading these posts is so inspirational. May not be able to wait till fall. Once the tube amps are up and running will at least tear into one of the LaScalla's and see what I have. Mike Ross
  22. Our system is bi-amped through an active crossover. For years we were in the Mobile DJ business before we understood amplifier clipping could cause speaker damage. So after wiring in an oscilloscope a couple of times realized you could be clipping an amp and not really hear it. From then on we started using two amps with passive crossovers eventually wired in an active crossover. Why it works for us is we never have to worry about hurting our speakers no matter the db level. With the power levels our gear has the speakers efficiency and our advancing age our ears need the most consideration.
  23. Was told by the builder the woofers are the same that came in the originals, once I'm ready to go will address everything. Honestly these speakers now are more than impressive before I change much inside will first get the boxes built the holes cut in the doghouses and give them a test drive. Having the LS drawings makes me all the more anxious to dive into this project. It will have to wait a while presently restoring one of our Heathkit W-5M tube amps. Our summer season is approaching fast with a wife that likes being busy,no complaints I have a lot of things to keep me occupied besides trying to keep up with her. Will certainly continue putting together all the info I need to tackle this project once the season changes. One thing is for certain will plan on previewing a pair of original LS. Thank you again for all the great info. Mike
  24. Thank you to both of you Bruce and Dave, mine were custom built looks like the rear panel is the access to the speaker. Not a problem want to look things over do what needs to be done to make the port mode work. Neither of you commented on the speaker so I will leave mine installed and see how it sounds once the boxes are built. Honestly it is hard to imagine the LS sounding better than they do now. Certain I could perform chest compressions standing in front of them. The exploded view of the LS gives me that much more to work with it would be excellent if I had the dimensions of the LS internals to compare against mine. One other thing do the LS have any damping material in the dog house? By the way I have always enjoyed tweaking our sound systems and conversing with like minded audiophiles.
  25. Bruce, Thanks for the reply, my LS's are custom built will have to cut an opening into the doghouse. Should that opening be a smooth transition the opening matching the doghouse walls? Also wonder about changing the speaker wont it be acting a bass reflex with the doghouse vented? Mike
