  1. Joe, Why are you going with a Rega arm? Have you looked at (auditioned) their Unify tonearm? Klipsch out.
  2. Sadly, I don't know how I missed the information earlier in the week. Jazz/Afro-Cuban pianist Hilton Ruiz passed away on June 6,2006. http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=2045360 Klipsch out.
  3. Max, VERY nice setup your friend has there. Are the Tannoy's the only two speakers he used for the audition. What are the other speakers? Did he play any classical music on the other speakers? BTW, It's good to see that overseas vote for the VPI TNT turntable, and I also noticed he uses a Symposium Ultra platform. What cartridge is he using with the TNT turntable? Klipsch out.
  4. What a great reminder why there is a Women's Movement against sexism! Klipsch out.
  5. Allan, Deep groove or not, this is a seminal Blue Note LP by Jackie Mc, and one of my favorites of all time. Klipsch out.
  6. Max, I'd love to audition that Walker vinyl system, but I would need serious Mega Lottery jackpot help to own it. Nevertheless, there are some elements in this system which can be incorporated in more pedestrian systems to improve playback. Attention was devoted to areas that are often considered "wasted money" by many. Among them, quality cabling, both power and interconnects, a turntable motor controller, component resonance(vibration) control, power line enhancer, and even the component rack, are all areas where most true vinyl enthusiast can reap audible benefits. I think my system has been improved by devoting attention to these areas, so it is great to see them, and how they are incorporated, in a "no holds barred" playback system. (I am a bit surprised that they did not incorporate a three point support rack system, especially since they employed it with the components.) Klipsch out.
  7. Can someone quickly say what is the last year for Heresy I production? 1983 or 1984? Klipsch out.
  8. I'll take it. The contact button is not working so send me an email at e_long@sbcglobal.net to complete the transaction. I'm in the Bay area and can pick it up. Klipsch out.
  9. Allan, Happy Birthday! Coltrane seems to always be a spiritual experience for me. His intonation and energy are ever present, and a great way to kick in a joyous birthday. Klipsch out.
  10. Absolutely Wonderful! Great looking speaker cabinets. Hopefully I'll find a showroom to listen to the SP-80s in the near future. Klipsch out.
  11. Most digital stylus guages are modified digital scales commonly used in the jewelry business. There are many AA threads on the subject and alternatives. Klipsch out.
  12. Mike, Congratulations on a true "steal" of a deal that should sound wonderful on the Cornwalls. That ST-70 looks like it was wrapped and stored away in a box for the last 40 years. Klipsch out.
  13. Fini Congratulations. Great find, and with what looks like could be a great base! Go Fini.....Go Fini....! This turntable should clean up very well. Klipsch out.
  14. Larry, Glad you like the Apollo. I think it gets better further down the playback road, and will distance itself from the Sony even more. The gap between analog playback and CD playback in my system has narrowed some with the addition of the Apollo. Analog still wins, but the Apollo is a real treat that takes THOUSANDS of dollars to better. Klipsch out.
  15. klipsch I will agree with Dean on this. I've had mine for some time now and have been impressed with how smooth and extended the presentation is. It replaces my original Rega Planet, and it is several leaps ahead of the original Planet. I think you're going to enjoy it. Klipsch out.
  16. Joe and rplace, Joe, are you still using the Denon 103? If so, I understand one reason you can not immediately tell the differeances between the 1400 and Gary's 2001 rig. The DL-103 is still one of the more musical moving coil cartridges you can mount in a tonearm. It requires extended listening for the average audio enthusiast to grasp the finer points of presentation the Transfiguration cartridge offers, especially with all the additional variables of hardware, room, source material, etc. This is not to say there is not a difference, because there is, it's just not as immediately discernable without extended listening sessions. rplace, Make no mistake however. A lot of what you are hearing in Gary's Basis, if you've heard it, is the result of the Transfiguration cartridge which is fantastic. Given all the positive attributes of any Basis table, a VPI Scout with the JMW9 arm offers more presentation presence and upgradable value than the Basis 1400 in my opinion. The RB300 is a good arm, but even with the better wiring package you can do better. The Scout is also upgradeable to an outstanding end package known as the Super Scoutmaster. Many dollars could be put back into your vinyl collection without sacrificing your playback quality with the Super Scoutmaster package as your end setup. The VPI Aries is also an outstanding option, readily available on the used market along with the Scout. An Aries can turn into a TNT or TNT HRX with upgrades from VPI. I understand Gary and Larry's enthusiasm for their Basis tables because they are excellent choices, but there are other options that includes Clearaudio's lineup, which like VPI, has loads of quality, and loads of upgradeability. My advice is to take your time and audition as many brands and models as possible. If you choose a Basis 1400 or whatever model, great. Don't make your choice based on what someone else has. A path too often traveled by many forum members, i.e. "X" said it's great, so it will be great for me. Can you hear the difference between a suspended table and one that is not? Which presentation is best to you? Take your time, learn what you should be listening for by auditioning as many different brands, models, and options as you can, then make your decision with some idea or plan how to get from where you start, to where you want to finish. Don't forget, cartridge choice is another journey that will be influenced by your choice of table and tonearm. Vinyl playback on the upper end is a great journey, as well as a very personal one. Educate yourself. Enjoy the journey. Enjoy the music. Klipsch out.
  17. Ok, here we go again with the BS that PWK recommendation of 20W minimum for Heritage speakers. What a crock of Bull SH!T from the Parrot. I hope no one buys into this without knowing the truth. Klipsch out.
  18. Gary, The Blackhawk performances, I believe, were released as a single record "Friday" night, a single record "Saturday" night, and the two record "Friday and Saturday" night. I suggest you get In Person Friday and Saturday Night at the Blackhawk with "No" eyes if you can find it. Klipsch out.
  19. "I think I never bring him up because I just figure everyone knows his body of work like the back of their hand, I guess." Allan, I love "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" It's very easy to not mention Miles because he has such a large body of recordings, almost everyone has a few in their stack. This also makes it easy to overlook some excellent music by some of the groups he recorded with. The Miles and Monk at Newport easy to miss because only one side is MIles, the other side is Monk with Pee Wee Russell on clarinet as special guest artist, and the Monk side is worth hearing as well. I'd like to list a few more that aren't on Gary's list, but you surely have. Odyssey! Prestige Stereo 7540 Miles, trumpet; Milt Jackson, vibes; Jackie McLean, alto; Ray Bryant, piano; Percy Heath, bass; Art Taylor, drums. Walkin' Prestige Stereo 7608 the LP includes MIles; J.J. Johnson, trombone; Lucky Thompson, tenor;HOrace Silver, piano; Percy Heath, bass; Kenny Clark, drums. It's also the/my only known appearance of Dave Schildkraut, alto sax on side B. Milstones Columbia 9428 This LP includes Cannonball Adderly; John Coltrane; Red Garland; Paul Chambers; Philly Joe Jones. There is also the set of recordings done live at the Blackhawk in San Francisco. Friday and Saturday Night at the Blackhawk in particular. These are only a few of the many contributions of Mr. Miles Davis. There are so many, many more. Klipsch out.
  20. Scott, It's no secret I love the Page One LP, but it's more accurate to state that Joe Henderson is one of my favorite Jazz artists, therefore there is usually something recorded by Joe that's in my rotation of vinyl all the time, not always Page One. There's also usually something by Miles, Mingus, Monk, Cannonball, Coltrane, Dexter, Jackie Mc, and Lee Morgan in that rotation at all times also. Likewise, my list of "frequently" played artists probably extends to more than 2 dozen individuals. On different days, in different moods, there's just no way to tell what LP, by whom, will get multiple plays. I love Jazz music, and have loved it since I was 13, which makes it really hard to pick a best. If I had to be stranded on an island with only a few pieces of music, I would not be without Kind of Blue, but that does not make it the "Best", but my favorite over all these years. Another LP on that island list would be Miles and Monk at Newport.(surprise!) Klipsch out.
  21. fini, Cal is one of many outstanding vibraphone players in the world of Jazz and deserves your vote. The level and diversity of the musicians, the wide selection of musical instruments that are employed, the musicians display of artistry on their instruments, plus the diveristy of musical selections recorded, at least for me, make Jazz recordings impossible to narrow down to a "Best" recording. Klipsch out.
  22. Ebay is such a strange market place, that it is hard to determine what is "fair value" for any given product. The military grade 2A3's, such as these, can sell from $150 to $250 a pair depending on the interest during any given point in time within the non Sun-Ra universe. You just never know! The good news is RCA made so many of these 2A3 blackplates that if you don't get this quad, there will be more available in the future. Klipsch out.
  23. Greg, Yes, the price was reasonable. There are however, plenty of vintage RCA blackplates available on ebay, and many go for bargain prices if one is willing to shop with the standard precautions of ebay purchase, meaning a buyer with sufficient positve feedback, and good communication. Patience, doing your homework on prices and brands, and not being caught up in bidding wars are the additional keys to success. I hope you enjoy your new tubes. Klipsch out.
