  1. DALE: you mean you are only using the $280 cables from NBS audio cables???? that's your problem ....you need to step up to the $10,000 4 ft rca interconnect cable that they sell...enough dollars will solve all of your problems.... o.k.......i apologize for the above statement....but I am a salesman at a store that sells a $4.00 neutrik connector that NBS uses in their "high-end" cables....... caveit emptor...... copper is copper.....double-blind will reveal all....that's why most cable compnies don't do it....

  3. Just like everything else out there, you get what you pay for....the radio shack spl meter is a p.o.s....it's amazing how many people on this board will spend thousands to tens of thousands of dollars on their equipment and actually expect a $30 spl meter to be accurate....lol....
  4. I picked up a nad 1300 preamp on ebay for my second system in my bedroom. One of the best two channel preamps I've ever heard!!....I would highly recommend nad to anyone....
  5. thanks for the great link colin....excellent article!!!

  7. ok....i know the low end of the cables...the ones that come in the box with the component....and with some web searching i think i found the most expensive interconnect on the planet... http://www.nbscables.com/products/new.html anybody else find anything even more exotic and expensive???? does anybody have a general formula on the ratio on cables to equipment? or how much do i need to spend on equipment to justify a $10,000 interconnect? my system: pioneer elite vsx-24tx receiver bang & olafson rx-2 turntable sony dvp-nc650v dvd/sacd/cd changer philips cdr770 cd recorder sony 75es dat recorder pioneer elite ct-05d cassette deck klf-30 mains klf-c7 center rs-3 surrounds velodyne ct-150 sub

  9. i agree with an earlier poster.....go to separates...i just got a nad 1300 preamp off of ebay for my bedroom system and it is great!!!...super quiet and just what the doctor ordered for a 2-channel system.... there are also many good amp choices out there...nad...carver..i'm using a used samson servo 170 and it sounds great!!!
  10. personally, i prefer to replace my equipment when i want to and not when the lightning decides it for me....not to mention your computer....how much info on your computer can be replaced if you get zapped by lightning?....a good surge protector is well worth the money....(in my opinion)...i can't comment on the whole sound quality issue....but surge protection is a definite value!
  11. maybe the best thing power conditioners do is remove occassional garbage that the power system lets through; whether from local contamination or from system contamination. The better ones also provide some surge protection....although you never know if they still are working if they protect you once.....almost all surge protectors use components that are sacrificial....components that burn out to protect your equipment....the problem is that you never know if they have burned out or not ...is your equipment still protected???...check out this link... http://www.surgex.com/ This message has been edited by minn_male42 on 08-22-2002 at 09:27 PM

  15. I found a great little portable dvd player at Target (believe it or not) for $99...It's about the size of a portable cd player. It operates on 12vdc. You need to purchase a car adapter separately (I got it at radio shack for about $3) It works great and does keep the kids occuppied for those longer trips! 16. I am running KLF-30's for the mains, KLf-c7 for the center, RS-3II's for the rears, and a velodyne ct150 for the sub...
  17. I have a Pioneer Elite receiver and I am very pleased with it. I would highly recommend that you audition the whole Pioneer Elite series of receivers...
  18. As was mentioned above, Marantz is very big in the pro a/v market...They have a very solid line of professional cassette decks, cd players, and portable recorders. Marantz recently released a portable cd recorder and they can't keep up with the demand.... Overall, very reliable, solid equipment....
  19. The main thing to look for in choosing bulk wire as mentioned above...i.e.: "home depot"...is to try to find the manufacturer on the wire. If you pick wire that is made in the U.S. by a reputable wire company...Belden, Comscope, West Penn, Eastman, etc. you will get a good cable with a good jacket. Home Depot imports alot of the wire it carries and its jacket and insulation is frankly a POS. (Sorry for the language...) I won't even start to discuss the merits of the wire itself....I don't have my bullet-proof vest on..... This message has been edited by minn_male42 on 06-30-2002 at 03:39 PM
  20. I picked up my pair of KLF-30's at a local pawn shop for $600 for the pair in perfect condition!
  21. Tripplite makes a great line of line conditioners as well as some of the best surge protectors out there and there prices are not too bad... You can check out them at www.tripplite.com
  22. "... but maybe it's better just to drink beer and listen to great music I gotta respect a statement like that....I was married for nine years and the WAF was the main reason that I kept my bose system..(also, spending money on the stereo system was not allowed...if you know what I mean).... after the divorce I now have KLF30's as my mains, KLF-C7 center, and RS-3 as my surrounds as well as a rack full of semi-pro and high end consumer equipment.... (it would even be better equipment if it wasn't for the child support...but that's a whole another story..) Thanks to all of you out there for your very interesting and insightful posts and comments on all of these forum topics.... ... but maybe it's better just to drink beer and listen to great music!?! (I hope you don't mind if I adopt that philosophy as my own...) Russ
  23. One of the main purposes of all line conditioners is to set the voltage at a constant 117 volts ac.(or 120 vac depending upon the brand) The power company says that 90 to 130 vac is "standard". The first thing you need to do is put a meter on your ac outlets and see what your voltage is. If you have voltages high or low, I would highly recommend a line conditioner. As for the "cleaning up the power"...well I can't hear any difference with my Monster Power HTS2500. But, I am sure there are situations where noise can get into ac lines....
  24. Hey, Great discussion! I have a link that you might find interesting. I know there have been numerous references to using JBL equipment in your project. The JBL Synthesis equipment is some pretty awesome equipment but it is out of your price range. A local dealer here in Minneapolis gave me a demo of the system. He told me that the audio side of the room was about $50,000 and the video side was another $50,000. Despite this price tag, they had sold 6 of these custom rooms and had more on order. So much for a recession!!!! Here is the link for the JBL Site http://www.jbl.com/home/synthesis/productlist.asp?SerId=Syn6
  25. indyklipschfan....you said that bose doesn't do anything in commercial/pro sound... actually...bose does have a full line of professional speakers for commercial installations....if you go into a disney store at your local mall you will probably see bose speakers in the ceiling as well as other businesses.... and yes, bose does the same thing in the pro field as the consumer market....their speakers are priced 2 to 3 times higher than the competition and they don't sound any better...sound familiar????
