  1. Another longtime cyclist here who started when Greg was a junior. I agree with Schu's comments on Greg vs. Lance. I do feel bad that Greg has "let himself go"; he just doesn't look healthy, nor like even a FORMER cyclist. To me it tends to detract from his credibility. But kudos to him anyway for winning, and more importantly, for riding clean.
  2. How true! I for one, think environment/room treatment and placement is EVERYTHING. Even a POS el cheapo speaker can sound great in the right room. I've eaten more popcorn waiting in suspense for the new crossovers to arrive!
  3. Place a voltmeter, set to ohms, across the terminals on the blown speakers, specifically the woofers and not just the the speaker cabinet terminals. What reading do you get?
  4. I think you should STAIN them black rather than paint them black. Painting will fill in the grain and you'll lose the high quality attractiveness of real wood. Stain, then add the gloss level finish of your choice- probably better to rub in an oil finish or wax. Of course, it would be wise to sand the existing finish off first. Or, at least sand enough to allow the stain to penetrate.
  5. So you had '78 LaScala's that sounded better than these new ones? I wonder whether the crossover points or the driver specs changed between the two models. I know you said Klipsch is shipping new crossovers to try so be sure and report back if that fixes it. I'm inclined to say no because I'd think Klipsch is smart enough to not mess with what works. Assuming the '78's were situated in the same spots and the new speakers, have you tried repositioning the new ones not as a potential permanent fix but just to see if location is affecting the sound? Is it possible the speakers are wired out of phase by you? Perhaps the internal crossover connections are not the same for both speakers? Lastly, and this is contrary to what I see in the photo: Is that a real brick wall or faux? I see the brick wall, and the hardwood floor and I begin to think the acoustics in the room may be too live, which would muddy ANY sound.
  6. Yesterday I wandered across this article about Chipotle restaurants using Klipsch Heresy's for their sound system. This intrigued me; I'd only visited a Chipotle once, about a month ago, and failed to notice the Heresy installation or the sound. That should be a subtle indication that the sound wasn't impressive, which is contrary to my experience with Heresy's I have in my condo. Fast forward to today, when a coworker and I were out on a service call and he wanted to eat at Chipotle for lunch. I thought this would be a great chance to revisit the sound system. It didn't impress me at all. Thank goodness Klipsch didn't demand a logo be placed near the speakers; it wouldn't be good advertising. I think it's the acoustics of the restaurant and the speaker placement which killed everything about the Heresy that I love. While you could argue that, at background music levels, that you won't hear much to impress, I think otherwise. One wall was brick; the ceiling was all steel and girder beams. With the speakers mounted away from any boundary walls (the plywood fascia didn't count as a contributor in my eyes), there was no bass reinforcement. Chipotle could pretty much have tossed the woofer and not affected the sound. I know some people consider the Heresy light in the bass department but that hasn't been my experience. The live acoustics muddied the sound. Here was a case of a sound system thrown together without any professional advice as to the application and installation. Taming the live acoustics would be one component of the solution. Since placing the Heresy's at floor level wouldn't be practical and I don't think ceiling placement would improve the bass either, the addition of a subwoofer, hidden behind the plywood architecture is almost mandatory. I wonder if LaScala's replaced the Heresy's in the same location would add that tactile bass at background music levels? Something needed to be done otherwise the Chipotle/Heresy marriage is nothing to brag about.
  7. You almost certainly won't find parts to repair a SINGLE spring loaded terminal; they're only manufactured in pairs. You can buy an entire assembly and solder it in yourself. Or you can remove the spring loaded terminal cup from the back of the sub, and cut the wires leading to the existing terminals. Extend those wires to somewhere else on the back of the subwoofer and drill a hole in the cabinet to allow the wires to exit. Get a terminal strip, much like seen on old Klipsch Heritage speakers, attach it to the rear of the cabinet/amp and connect those wires to the terminal strip. Connect your speaker wires and you're done. You can get a terminal strip at your local hardware store; it will likely have more terminals than you need but it will work
  8. Thanks for this solution-I had no idea an Apple AirPort would function like this. I've posted to the Apple Discussion forums on some specific questions and if all things are a go, I'll post back with my success.
  9. With your solution I would have to run the cables across the floor. Might work in a bachelor pad, but has zero Wife Acceptance Factor otherwise.
  10. I want to stream audio from my iMac's headphone jack to my stereo amp's RCA CD input, which is the remaining input, and is 15 feet away. Will the Klipsch Gate do the job? I assume I need 2 of them; 1 for Rx and 1 for Tx? I don't have a smartphone or tablet; can I control it with my iMac? I really don't need any library controls or anything; I just need to get the signal across the room. Are there any other products out there that will solve my problem? Thanks!
  11. We definitely want to hear your opinion after you get them. Considering you have no clue what they sound like, I'd be interested in your first impressions, other than the $hi!-eating grin!
  12. What a great description! P.S. I tried to "test" the bass of my 6.5" woofer bookshelf speakers with some electronic music from Neurodisc. The injection molded baffles came unglued from the cabinets and started buzzing...they were not Klipsch's.
  13. Obviously from a wife who hated the things. ;-)
  14. RESALE?! I got news for you all; Aaron is either going to bequeath them to a family member or make room for them in his casket...
  15. I'd choose the kg 4.2 because of its passive radiator. I've read that passive radiators don't have the potential issue of port noise "chuffing" because there's no port for air turbulence to be created.
  16. If your receiver isn't shutting down at the levels you're playing, it's fine. Your Insignia receiver may have had internal protection devices which activated when the speakers drew too much current or the receiver got too hot (thermal protection). As efficient as your Klipsch speakers are (they play louder with less power required than most speakers) you shouldn't need much power to drive them; even 120 watts isn't necessary. You DID buy a receiver with many more features than you need. Unless you're looking to RETURN IT for something less complex and less expensive that meets your needs, I'd say keep it. For the price of the Sony, you'd probably pay the same price for something that meets your needs but without all the bells and whistles. However, if you're looking for recommendations for something else, just ask and I'm sure you'll get many sound answers.
  17. NOW we're gettin' somewhere! I was looking for that user description that would explain how the LaScala's produce something the Heresy's cannot while their low ends' are only a few hertz apart. I start reading things such as, Sure; pzannucci is talking about the Klipshorn here, but I think it applies to the LaScala as well. Here, pauln confirms that coupling the speaker to the room by proximity to the floor is key for the Heresy, as well as the other models, to bring out one of the hallmarks of the Klipsch horn loading. I mean, I'm a new owner of a pair of Heresy's and I'm constantly reminded when I feel the woofer stimulate the furniture across the room, even at modest levels, of these principles. I've no doubt the LaScala's horn loading brings this up to an entirely new level.
  18. Your comments make me wonder what would be the result if Klipsch built a fully horn loaded speaker with an 8" or 10" woofer.
  19. Sorry pal, I'm not a troll. I AM getting REAL answers to my question and I think they're all doing just fine explaining that there's more to it than just a few hertz in the low end. Thanks for all the responses!
  20. What's the appeal of the LaScala vs. the Heresy? I mean, according to the current spec sheet, the LaScala doesn't play much lower (58 vs. 51Hz.). Sure; it's more efficient, but I can turn up the volume on my Heresy's and get the same result. Does the extra efficiency add a new dimension in sound? Does that 7Hz really make a difference? Does the horn loaded woofer have a different coloration than the Heresy direct drive woofer? I'm not criticizing the LaScala. I'm actually intrigued by it and wonder what I might be missing, although it would never fit in my room and my neighbors would probably mutiny.
  21. Maybe you can keep the Cornwalls and the wife can just come to visit? ;-)
  22. No; the Heresy woofer surrounds are not foam. I've also never read of them rotting. And Heresy's WILL fit in the back seat of a sedan. I bought mine used and both fit in the back seat of my Saturn.
  23. You think just like me; put the candy right in front of Beachboy! Heresy's in Olathe Heresy's in Dodge City Heresy's in Dodge City (Same as above?) Sounds like a motivated seller... kg4's in Littleton. These play lower and louder than Heresy I's and that's not to disparage the Heresy, which can stand on their own. I see no shortage of the ability to scratch Beachboy's itch for Klipsch in Kansas. He owes it to himself to hear both the Heresy's and the kg4. P.S. I also encourage you to check eBay using "Klipsch" as the search word and sorting the results by "Distance Nearest First". You'll soon find a good deal with a "Local Pickup Only" option.
