  1. I have a cedar chest that I bought at a flea market back in the mid-70s. Haven't bought many LPs since then--the cedar chest is full.
  2. In 1970 I moved up from graduate student poverty to postdoc wealth. About that time my mono 24W Knight 5881 amplifier's transformer died. My first reaction was to find another mono amplifier after not finding a replacement transformer. However, stereo was now "the thing". I built a Heathkit receiver, but couldn't find another University 12-inch triax speaker to match the Aristocrat knock-off I'd built as a teenager. So I started auditioning speakers at audio stores in Syracuse. Nothing impressed me until I stumbled upon Klipschorns at a store on the northside of town. That ended the search, but at $884 each I could only afford one. Klipsch promised to hold the second one for me until I could save up for it. My pair matches in appearance, but the serial numbers are not sequential. I assume the second serial number was issued when the second one shipped. Still satisfied with the sound after all these years. A year ago I built an Elekit 8600s kit and put Western Electric 300B tubes in it. It's sweet listening to my old ears.
  3. I would Google "how to apply wood veneer" to begin with. Then be sure all surfaces are sanded smooth. I veneered some plywood a few years ago. Not hard to do. You'll need a roller to smooth it out, but read about how to do it first. Should look nice. You can probably find lots of veneer wood options to match what you have in your LaScallas. Good luck.
  4. I think ZT is right -- speakers are most important.
  5. Be careful around those high voltage ceilings John -- probably hooked up to the B+ of a 1000 Watt tube amp!
  6. I use 12 gauge, oxygen-free copper zip cord. Very low impedance. www.amazon.com/Performance-Gauge-Speaker-Oxygen-Copper/dp/B071KHG7X5
  7. Henry, what speakers are you using that 1/3 watt is sufficient?
  8. Kevin, Check out the review of the Elekit 8600S amplifier in Stereophile. https://www.stereophile.com/content/gramophone-dreams-48-venus-tube-western-electrics-300b I use 12 gauge multi stranded oxygen-free copper wire for speakers with banana plug connectors. Not very expensive.
  9. Was the sub from the older sub series or the new one?
  10. back of the tv had 25,000 Volts with cathode tubes! But if you turned one off, unplugged it and waited a bit there was no danger.
  11. It's your amplifier. Try one with less power or lower noise.
  12. I'm very happy with my Elekit 8600s. It's a 300B tube amp kit from Japan.
  13. I saw a suggestion today in another forum to use an audio jack to dual RCA connectors to tap the headphone port to link in the sub. Anyone done that?
  14. I have not tapped the woofer crossover output yet. I was trying to find out if this would work. Depending upon the resistor value one should be able to get enough signal for the sub amp. And the sub amp would follow the main amp's volume setting, so once set the sub should stay in sync.
  15. interesting thread--took awhile to read. For all the concern over the amplifier, not much discussion about the choice of tube brand, new or old, etc within a particular tube type such as EL34. In the tube forum this is a big deal for many enthusiasts. They would experiment with the tubes within say the ST70 amp, maybe before moving to another amp design. Resistors generate noise when current flows through them. One type of noise is low frequency noise called pink, or 1/f noise because it increases in magnitude as the frequency decreases. You can find an article about this by Moore on the internet to see which resistors have the least of this noise. I don't know if this impacts audio amps much. I bought Klipschorns in 1972 and recently got back into the audio hobby in a modest way. I've built an Elekit 8600S 300B amp after reading a review in Stereophile mag. Plenty of power for Klipsch speakers.
  16. I use 12 gauge cord multi-strand bought on-line with my 16 ohm Khorns. The wire impedance should be plenty low enough compared to the speaker resistance. Not very expensive.
  17. I recently asked about hooking up a sub using my two-channel amp with Khorns. I asked whether I could tap the speaker's woofer output from the crossover with a resistor significantly larger than the 16 ohm impedance of the woofer and feed th at tap to the sub. I didn't get an official reply but I think it would work. That would feed just the bass frequencies to the sub and you could still use the sub's filtering settings.
  18. Maybe just move the resistance probes to the speaker connection from the crossover. No need to disconnect anything.
  19. Elekit has volume control. Phono preamp has none. I have a switch between components and the Elekit to select the source. It's like this one-- https://www.ebay.com/itm/115742615137?chn=ps&mkevt=1&mkcid=28&srsltid=AfAwrE7e-XgM-GVJ8yrpQpGNhieB2TEe6oKPof1qtMCeotAU5C29jfXDebc, but not exactly the same.
  20. I use a Vincent Pho 701 preamp with my turntable, but it has no volume control. Other inputs (iPod, DVD, TV) do not have a preamp. I thought of tapping the speaker output after the Khorn's crossover output to its woofer to mimic a woofer output. Google search for B1v2 buffer turns up nothing quickly. Will the subwoofer output from the Russound ADP-1.2 make the sub's volume track the speaker volume? Thanks for all your thoughts
  21. I have a 300b SET amp (Elekit 8600s) and 1972 Klipschorn speakers. The new Klipsch subwoofers seem attractive, but I don't have an amp with subwoofer output taps, just outputs for two speakers. I think the new subs have their own amps and was wondering if I could tap the woofer output of the Klipshorn crossovers to feed the subwoofer amp(s). The Khorns are 16 ohms. If I tapped off 1 % with a 1600 ohm resistor and fed that to the subwoofer, would that work? Once the subwoofer's volume is set, the the subs output should track the amplifier's volume control. I thought about tapping the amplifier's input but then the amplifier's volume wouldn't be tracked by the sub. Maybe someone has another thought.

I use an Elekit 8600s with Western Electric 300b tubes to drive my 1972 Khorns. You might be able to hear this amp at the Western Electric factory in Georgia or you can read about it in Stereophile mag review linked at the Tube Depot (https://www.tubedepot.com/products/elekit-tu-8600-300b-se-tube-amplifier-kit-limited-run). 23. Sorry to upset the expert listeners here with a wish for scientific data on a topic of heated opinions. I have seen some tests of cables and the data showed almost no differences (0.1 db). Seems to me that some measurements might enlighten us and I'm puzzled as to why this seems to offend some of you. I'll go back to my 300b Set amp and Khorns now and try to calm down. Peace be the Journey
  24. I'll wait for someone to record a track from a new component and compare it to a recording after the imagined break-in period. This could be a speaker, a SS transistor unit, a new tube, or a capacitor - whatever. I haven't noticed anything myself. I almost immediately decided to buy Klipshorns after hearing them for the first time--my ears didn't need to adjust over a period of time. It was "problem solved".
