  1. Greg Timbers was skeptical at first and now advocates for Charged coupled. A member at the Lansing Heritage forum said his Everest were sounding 'grainy' and after a while he realized he needed to check the battery and that cleared them up. Greg said to just make sure to use film caps and Solens are what everyone was using about ten years ago. I have a pair of 250 TIs that I am considering going charged coupled per Greg Timbers comments, but with that network the cost of the caps really add up. He is the designer so I will most likely just trust him and go that route.
  2. Captain already said it, look at the graphs above. There is a seller of Russian PIOs near you. That would be my first choice in EU.
  3. Very good point. Same problem with Pink Floyd. It is annoying. I am listening to 40 licks by the Rolling Stones and it is a really good compilation without the issue. Another really good compilation is Eric Clapton Complete. Great set and really good price. I have it on Vinyl and am temped to get the CDs as they are easier to play in my family room. https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Clapton-Eric/dp/B000UAE8CQ
  4. FORUM RULES, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO POST PICS OF YOUR NEW SPEAKERS.
  5. If the coil is easy to access you can unwind a little using an inductor calculator if obsessing over details is your thing (I like to)
  6. I saw it for about $150, but now I see it for $37.79, well worth the $40. Some good deals on Ebay for the CDs.
  7. I know that it changes with frequency, but if a speaker were too bright, this might be an easy solution, although the mylar caps appears to be inexpensive.
  8. Steely Dan CDs will run you about $10 to $15 each, get them and then the vinyl later if you like.
  9. Silly question but for someone who already has polypropylene caps, can you run a parallel 0.5 ohm resistor on the existing caps? I found this at Partsexpress but am curious about something that might be less expensive from Digikey or a similar source: https://www.parts-express.com/Jantzen-0.51-Ohm-10-Watt-Audio-Grade-Superes-Resistor-255-941?quantity=1
  10. How is your CD vs Vinyl? If CD is as good, get the CDs, they are cheaper, more convenient and can be burned to FLAC for a server. Citizen Steely Dan is a good compilation, but it is expensive now so just get all of their CDs or albums. With Steely Dan, get all of their main albums. All are great. I missed out years ago on a Japanese vinyl set of everything for $300, but that was a lot back then.
  11. Yes, lets stop this immediately. This is the first interesting thread that I have seen on this forum in a very long time, no arguing and a lot of interesting technical info. We wouldn't want any more of this. I am not critical on this forum, but after twenty years this place is so boring. Back to your scheduled program gents and thanks for some interesting information!
  12. Things are very slow right now but we were at $1M to $2M an acre for run of the mill land in Las Vegas.
  13. Engineers laugh over this stuff. HDMI cables require thicker cables as the amount of information transferred increases. Higher resolution needs thicker wire because so much is being transferred nowadays. If you are just transferring sound over a UBS, any decent cable should work. If you prefer a $700 cable because it is a small portion of the total costs, enjoy...
  14. Check these out, quite a bargain! The much coveted 601s for $3K. https://lasvegas.craigslist.org/ele/7558562031.html Prices can get too high. I just passed up a local pair of Marten Django XLs for $4K. They sounded amazing and I was really tempted, but where would I put them? Point is if I had to choose between say a pair of 1970s Cornwalls or those for the same price, easy decision.
  15. I have one of these. Even if you only do a few holes once in a while it iw worth it. I can do what used to take an hour or more in ten minutes with this beauty. I love it. Great price too: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kreg-Electric-Pocket-Hole-Machine-Adjustable-Mobile-Base/50292519
  16. From Del Boca Vista Phase II, a mid 90's Eldorado, but he had to sleep in it with his space pen.
  17. I don't like oiling speakers, especially JBLs because you need to be so careful by the drivers. I just refinished several pairs of speakers using oil based poly. Each was an oiled finish but the smell and time involved using BLO is annoying. Beautiful finish and a do it once thing (at least for the next twenty years). My concern in another thread is drying out. I think that I need to put on a coat of BLO to maintain a pair of 250 TIs while I wait to restore them (they are actually perfect, just old, need a nice finish and maybe some caps).
  18. I use packing tape over it. One layer very neatly over it will preserve it for future owners.
  19. I'm sure my desk is killing me and I should go with a standing desk but I have four monitors and a complicated desk. For your back problems, try really strengthening your core. Stretch and do leg lifts and crunches every day and try to do this video three times a week ( I used to do five but actually got a bruise on my abs).
  20. Yes, exactly. I want to make sure that the wood has a correct moisture and then put on a finish that will last ten years. I just did three sets of speakers and love the finish. I do not want to have to oil these every year.
  21. Do it right or don't do it at all. I bought some beautiful Chorus IIs that were re-finished. I replaced the stands and found that they did not finish the bottoms. I put on three coats of urethane and the bottoms then looked better than the speaker, so I refinished the entire speakers. I also did crossovers and made new grills, all on a set of 'restored' speakers. The big thing is the amount of time to do it correctly, it is a labor of love because you will have so many hours into this you can never try to make money doing this.
  22. Oh man, I have a bunch of really nice grill cloth that is much less than that, like $60 a yard. I need to post a pic.
  23. Take them completely apart. Lightly sand the wood with 220 grit. Also sand the black areas. Tape up the sides and spray the black (front and back). Then maybe stain the speakers (I don't like oak). Apply three coats of an oil based urethane, sanding with 600 in between coats and clean with a tack cloth. Wire wheel and paint each screw in semi gloss black. You will also need to make new grills. Might as well replace the capacitors too. Heck, might as well just keep them at this point.
  24. What I am trying to do it to add some moisture to the finish if needed. The plan it to refinish these in an oil based urethane finish, but in the meantime, I am concerned about them getting too dry and possibly cracking. I think a coat of blo / mineral spirits for now and then when I am ready to refinish, I can disassemble the speakers and put on an oil based urethane. Hate the smell of BLO in the house.
