  1. Guys, the sky is not the limit. A Patrician 800 has the "Patrician 800" crossover on the outside of the back right of the enclosure, and it is quite simple to take a photo. The 30 inch Patrician 800 woofer is bolted to the middle of the back panel. A Patrician 800 did not exist in 1951, in fact here is a review of the Patrician IV from 1956. The 800 followed it by a decade. http://audioarchives.ecrater.com/p/8981550/electro-voice-patrician-iv-speaker If Andrea states the speaker is from 1951 and this speaker was on the cover of the magazine, it is a Patrician I or II, does not have a 30 inch woofer, and is not a Patrician 800. If it is a factory assembled Patrician, Andrea can remove the front wood facade rectangle that has the metal grille cloth and the Pisces metalwork, exposing all the drivers except the woofer. The woofer is exposed by removing the square wood panel on the underneath front facade. If she wants $30K large for a single Patrician, she better get more forthcoming with photos to reach even a tenth of that.
  2. Unfortunately, you heard wrong. I would expect a 1951 Patrician 1 or Patrician 2, which this is, might sell for a pair at $5K tops. A Patrician 800 has the thirty inch woofer, and is an entirely different bird indeed.
  3. I have listened to quite a number of tube amps, and between an estate and our stable, we have close to thirty amps now. I have yet to hear a well integrated HT tube based setup. I have heard a multitude of SS based HTs that have kicked *** with ease, and for far less investment than a tube based one. I'm sure tubes can be done, and done well, but break out the wheelbarrows of cash. Max, unless the MC30s have been totally rebuilt and decked out with superior tubes, the VRDs are a better investment at that price point. I would be hesitant to buy a set of 30s at prime rib pricing and still needing to be rebuilt and upgraded. The VRDs are happy with virtually all genres of music at all volumes, at times the MC30s do not like being pushed hard. Wolfram, good to hear from you again. Our sheltie Shiloh passed a year ago at 18.5 years old, a fierce guard dog and boon companion for all his glorious years with us. I see yours has his muzzle turning to white as well. Give your some scratches and love from us, maybe while listening to some good jazz!
  4. Duder, I know Tim and could check them out as Tim allows.I even have a 10x10 storage nearby in the south county area. You have a pm.
  5. This should be mandatory for everyone to read and act on. If you have more than a couple thousand dollars, have kids, have a house, car, or other significant assets, all should be able to pass on to your desired heirs with an absolute minimum of fuss, muss, legal action, and time.
  6. Andrea, you have EBay as the best route to command the highest amount of money, and then you have to navigate the shoals whether you are dealing with an honest person or not. I have a Patrician utility speaker sitting in the garage, with the 18" woofer, 12" midwoofer, t25 mid, and t35 tweeter with the correct crossover, and have not been able to sell it in the past year for $1500. Yours is better displayed, but fairly modified, and looks like it is living room ready. Outside of EBay, you may get $1500 to $2000. On EBay, you could get $5K if there is a bidding frenzy. You could also get taken. Korean and Italian buyers are among the largest prominent sharks in vintage circles. You get around the shipping problem by noting a couple shipping companies in your auction, like Craters and Freighters, and let the buyer be responsible for pickup and shipping entirely. Yours has the 18" woofer and the 12" midwoofer, but I can't tell for certaing if the horns are Altec or Stephens. That is a beautiful speaker and a wonderful set of memories for you. I'll do a little more digging... Dave
  7. Zaw posted this ad. Zaw is not noted for being at the low end of pricing.
  8. We will be at it again on consecutive Saturdays, January 17th and 24th, from 1 pm to 6pm both days, here in St. Louis. We will be running some Klipsch RF7s with modded ALK crossovers, an Audio Research SP9 tube preamp, and either a Canary Audio CA301 with 300Bs, a Sun Audio SV2A3, or an Atma-Sphere S30 MKII OTL amp in the main room. In the kitchen we will be running Altec 19s with a Juicy Music Merlin tube preamp, with either McIntosh MC40s or a Sean Casper 5998 amplifier. This will give folks quite an assortment of output tubes to listen to, as 300Bs, 2A3S, 6AS7S, 6L6s, and a 5998 will be represented. RSVPs will be required, and we will have some beverages and probably a hot soup to nourish cold tummies.
  9. Alex, your dad was a great help and a good friend of mine. It has always been a pleasure to read of the joy in his posts, a joy caused in no small part by having your mom and you in his life. You dad was a gentleman and a good father, and we all are proud he was a friend here. Thank you for sharing him with us, and know that we treasured him as well. Dave
  10. Carl and I took his 9 year old son and my 8 year old son to a combined Scorpions/AC DC cover band concert. We got asked to leave at the midpoint of the AC DC concert, as the boys were having too much fun dancing(in the judgement of the rent-a-cop), so we left. Three years later, our sons still talk about the great time they had before they got booted. It was a blast all the way around!
  11. He worked for Klipsch before he went out on his own, and he went after the commercial market. PWK was almost all about the home market, and Allen had a lot of good will built up while he worked for Paul. Plus, Klipsch was making a decent profit from what they sold to Allen.
  12. I thought it would be Kresco. You should see his warehouse down in Crestwood, it is quite stunning. Don't forget our Festivus party in January, Tim. Hope you can make it!
  13. Hey Mike, if RockOn doesn't buy it, I'll buy it for $150 and hold it for the summer, when you are again floating well and want it back. Dave
  14. Yeah, 2 watts is probably enough, but we can't know for sure! Dave, you had a discussion on AK about the actual speaker which the gentleman (the person whom you PM'd me about) purchased, and expressed some concerns about the cabinet not being original, etc. I can send you the link if you can't locate it. Maynard Okay, Tom's Stephens in Maine. His is either a knockoff or a factory one off type build, but it has all the correct drivers, track rack, and crossover, but not the identical Eames blueprint design. That should be about 102 dB. I have talked to Charles Eames son in the intervening years, and he noted his dad was adamant about the factory being a stickler on his EXACT design. That meant the exact materials, dimensions, colors, bare aluminum, finish, and build process. His dad had five to ten differing builds in the ramp up to full production, and some of these prototypes would be offered to managers and key figures in the process at teardown time. Without provenance, it is hard to say whether this one is one of these, or a great sympathetic rendering of an Eames classic.
  15. If the speaker is an e1, 2, or 3, it is about 98 dB @ 1 watt. I desperately would love to find an E3 for our 1957 atomic ranch.
  16. I think that pair was in southern Illinois near here. You can listen to my RF7s with Dean modded crossovers, but they aren't for sale any time some. I'm in south county.
  17. Favog, it means you have been around long enough that things are starting to circle around. It is a good thing when a skateboard, reconnecting with a friend, and a recording are of greater significance than a Mercedes, gold bullion, and a European vacation.
  18. Yea, that is Fairchild 260's(Chis) 260, Larry. He has the pair, but in this photo, he only is running the one. SETI is always looking for a Brook 12A, and I am stalking for a 255 or a 260, so keep your eyes open on the east coast if you could. Tapajeurs, I wish you were in Chicago, so you could come down for a listening session. SET amps are really extremely sharp ice skates. If you don't get the preamp exactly where you want to be, it can throw off the entire presentation, which is the reason why you bought the amp in the first place.
  19. Ben, the tubes and amps arrived, expertly packed and looking mighty fine! As always, it's a pleasure dealing with you.
  20. Hey Larry, Captn Bob had one, but sold/traded it to a friend about twenty years ago. I am sure there are a couple other old buzzards who twisted Fairchild knobs in the past as well, but it's really a way back machine thing now. Here are a couple photos of my humble Fairchilds. If you come across any Fairchild amp, I need one to go with the preamp(s) and the 412 table to make up a complete Fairchild setup.
  21. Tapajeurs, I would not run to get a Conrad Johnson, as they are generally a little veiled and colored. That is NOT what you want with your SETH, as it will reduce the best attributes. I also would stay away from all McIntosh and Marantz vintage preamps, as they also are in the same boat. For clarity, neutrality, and just doing a great job, the two newer and three vintage pres I have had great luck with are the JuicyMusic Merlin(now out of production) and Craig's NOSValves NBS preamp, and from the vintage side, the Ampex stereo preamp, the Fairchild 248, and the Audio Research SP3 MKII. I have heard all of these driving SET amps, and they were all superlative. Note that anything can sound wonderful IF you massage and mod the HE)($*#@ out of it, but these hit the bullseye without any work, which is a great place to start.
  22. aidyn, sorry I couldn't help, but my set is mismatched. However, I do have a friend who is selling a set of EV Sentry IIIs in Alton that you should consider. He also may have other Klipsch, but I don't know at this time. Dave
