oscarsear
The pie man passed on. I loved his irreverent humor and slapstick antics. I tried to buy some of his stuff on DVD but the really good black and white programming doesn't seem to be available. 'S'pose he's now flinging those cream pies at angels and vice versa. WMcD
A very funny man has passed away. You can find a brief description of the "send in the pictures of the presidents" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soupy_Sales. He described it in more detail in an interview which might be out there on the 'net. As mentioned he did ask kids to go into their father's wallets and send them to him. There is no reason to think that any kid did so. However, some of his viewers played along with the gag and sent in at least some money. IIRC: S.S. described that the next day he went to the studio for work and was greeted by a guard who told him he was instructed to escort him to the office of the general manager. The general manager was there with the station attorney. The manager asked him if it he had actually made the request, which S.S. admitted to. But he was worried at the harsh expressions. "What? so maybe they sent in a couple of bucks?" This was met with more anger. The station manager announced they had received $2000. And S.S. realized this might be trouble. Of course, maybe this was just a little embelishment by S.S. Smile. Wm McD Does anyone remember, "Do the Mouse, Yeah"?
Myhamish
More to this guy than meets the pie. I remember him well. RIP, Soupy

cmdridq
He was funny as hell, day in and day out. Of course, one would need to appreciate his style to feel that way.
picky
Gosh, I didn't know the Soup was gone. That's too bad. I really enjoyed his shows. He got his start in Detroit years ago. I saw him at a public appearence in our town in the 50's. I shall forever miss Soupy, White Fang, Black Tooth, Pooky & Hippie. I was a Soupy Sales Bird Bath Club member and watched 'Lunch with Soupy' every day! Hats off the Lou Adler, too (his puppeteer also RIP). There's nothing worse than cold soup! ...he would have appreciated that. LOL - Glenn
