Moderators Youthman Posted September 20, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 20, 2014 (edited) Friend of mine asked me to help him find a budget system (no more than $300) to replace his Sony bookshelf speakers. Of course I'm looking at moving him to Klipsch. He bought an entertainment center that takes up the entire wall so there is no room for floorstanding speakers of any kind. Room isn't incredibly large so smaller speakers should work fine for him. I would love to get him some small bookshelf speakers (ie RB-61) but a $300 budget isn't going to get him 5 speakers and possibly a small sub. LOL Believe this is the model number of the center channel. Any Klipsch speaker would outperform this surround. So far, here is what I found..... Option 1 - Quintet III New in Box (guy bought a soundbar instead) for $150. I could then pick him up a Velodyne CT-120 (12" with 120 watt amp) for $100 OBO (so probably $75.00). Total Cost: $225 - $250. Option 2 - Quintet (I think it may be the 1st Version but not sure) for $300. This is all 5 speakers and a Klipsch sub (not sure what model goes with this set. Can someone help give me some direction based on the photos? She sent me these addtional photos without the grills Edited September 21, 2014 by Youthman
Moderators Youthman Posted September 20, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 20, 2014 Option 3 - Onkyo TXSR603 Receiver, 5 Klipsch Speakers (not sure what model) and a JBL Subwoofer (not sure what model). Here are the pics she sent of the Klipsch speakers.
Moderators Youthman Posted September 20, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 20, 2014 Would appreciate help identifying Option 2 and Option 3 as well as your opinions on which option would be a good upgrade from his current Sony setup. He's powering them all by his Harman Kardon AVR146 (Has HDMI, Dolby Digital & DTS and only 30 watts per channel). He has no desire to change his receiver so Option 3, we would have a receiver to sell to make the deal less than $300.
mustang guy
Double his money by folding it in half, and the new budget would be $600. There's always a smart a in the group.
Scrappydue
Option one would be my choice. The one quintets are old as dirt. And the hd satellite aren't near as good as the quintets IMO. My dad has the hd500 5.1 setup.
Moderators Youthman Posted September 20, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 20, 2014 Option one was what I was leaning towards as well. Is Option 3 one of the HD series?
Moderators dtel Posted September 20, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 20, 2014 We had some Quintets, I don't know what version and I was really impressed. With a decent sub it would be really nice, I have recommended them lot for people who want something small or inexpensive. For there size and cost they will surprise you.
derrickdj1
I have the HD 500 and for a small to small medium size room they were good. Is she buying off CL? I have the HD 500 set sitting. The sub is what makes the HD 500 or quints a decent system. Edited September 20, 2014 by derrickdj1
Moderators Youthman Posted September 21, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 21, 2014 The sub is what makes the HD 500 or quints a decent system. Yeah, I've told him that if we go with satellite speakers, he has to have a small sub or they will sound terrible and there will be no bass. Is she buying off CL? Yes, I'm looking on CL for them. We had some Quintets, I don't know what version and I was really impressed. With a decent sub it would be really nice, I have recommended them lot for people who want something small or inexpensive. For there size and cost they will surprise you. Yeah, that was my thought too.
Raz0r
I like the Quintets also. Not sure if you are still looking, but here is a decent setup in your range. Even with shipping, I think you can still fit in there. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ele/4680978810.html
Moderators Youthman Posted September 24, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 24, 2014 Thx Raz0r....my friend is in contact with someone with the Quintet III for $150 new in box. So far, that's the best deal I've found for him.
The History Kid
I would also say Option 1. I think you'll get more bang for your buck going that route and $150 isn't too bad either.
Moderators dtel Posted September 24, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 24, 2014 At that price he can not go wrong, ours were $300 new from a dealer without a sub and to be honest after hearing them felt we got a great deal. Your friend would love them with a sub, he would be hooked.
jason str
For ~$300 Speakers Sub Not Klipsch but much better than what you listed here. Those 3 way Sony's are not too bad, maybe you could just find more of them to complete the system.
Moderators Youthman Posted September 25, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 25, 2014 Jason, that may not be a bad option for him. The sub seems to be on par with the Velodyne CT-120 that we were considering (think it has been sold). Bookshelf speakers "should" sound better than satellite speakers. The Dayton sub has great reviews, the bookshelf speakers have zero reviews. I'll see what he thinks.
jason str
The woofers are good and the tweeters are highly rated, i would have not recommended them if i thought they were not an upgrade to the other suggestions.
Moderators Youthman Posted September 25, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 25, 2014 Thanks Jason, I've just never heard any of the Dayton speakers myself. He might like the idea of having brand new speakers anyways as opposed to a 10+ year old sub.
Moderators Youthman Posted September 25, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 25, 2014 Only problem I can see is that's only a 2.1 system for $
K5SS
You know the game better than anyone Youth. Just tell him to keep his current setup and start saving up for a better system down the road. I wouldn't recommend any of the systems you listed over what they are currently using.
Moderators Youthman Posted September 25, 2014 Author Moderators Share Posted September 25, 2014 (edited) Yeah, these RB-3's would make sweet main speakers for him but I think they will be way too high for the shelves he has. I'll get him to measure the space tomorrow so I can see what is the largest bookshelf the entertainment center will fit.
