Rhetor
Turning to my forum friends for some help recommending over the ear headphones for my 77 year old mother. Mom has been living with me for a few months to get well. That mission seems accomplished and she is about ready to return home. Since being with me she upgraded to an iPhone 6 Plus, and has rediscovered the joy of music. (I load her CDs on the iTunes and sync it with her iPhone.) We tried all sorts of ear buds (even some high end ones) that I have, but none of them seemed comfortable for her. She tried on a pair of old crappy beat up just about worn out Bose headphones that I have, over the ear, and it worked great for her. Before she goes home, Mom is asking that I order a pair of over the ear headphones for her. Mom would like to keep the cost of about $100 more or less. I am pretty much out of the knowledge loop about over the ear headphones. But here are some I am looking at; I am hoping you will have some better options and insight. http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Reference-ONE-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B005ZNHDYS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1424284617&sr=8-8&keywords=KLIPSCH+headphones Or these: http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-Status-Black-Headphone/dp/B00FIXBZQM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1424284617&sr=8-4&keywords=KLIPSCH+headphones I simply have no idea of what kind of bang she can get for $100. So, Over-the-ear headphones recommendations at around $100 for Mom? Thanks in advance! Edited February 19, 2015 by Rhetor
fuzzydog
I have a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50's and they are excellent. The current versions (ATH-M50x) have a detachable power cord. $129 on Amazon.

mustang guy
I like foam type ear pads cause they are more comfortable and don't make you sweat. Sennheiser has a lot available in your price range. I have had many pairs of Sennheiser over the years. I don't have an HD-518, but it looks like a good model for your mom's use. wvu80
You say "over the ear." Do you truly mean a soundproof cup that encloses the entire ear, or something more "on the ear." Those over the ear phones are usually heavy and bulky and have a wide band that sits right on top of the head. I don't have any model specific suggestions, but I will say in general I don't think you should think about your mom's needs in terms of what you like. For instance, sound quality for a decent price would be #1 for most of us. But your mom ain't us. I'm thinking your mom won't want to put a big bulky headphone on top of that nice hair do she gets done every Friday so she will look nice for church on Sunday. I would think more in terms of those under the chin headphones, that are nice and light. Just a thought.

Fortunately Mom puts her hair in a short pony tail and only gets the curlers out or a fancy do for a big event, very rarely. She wants headphones that cover the ear, something like the two I was exploring and the few suggestions I have gotten. Looking for bang for the buck for her, but does not need any battery powered noise canceling headphones. johnnydrama
Can't beat these deals. I've owned a few pairs of them. But if you want to stick to Klipsch, that Statuses would be the way to go and $119 is a good price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Monster-Inspiration-Active-Noise-Cancelling-Over-Ear-Headphones-Multiple-Colors-/121417566363?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item1c450d089b or http://www.ebay.com/itm/Monster-Inspiration-Noise-Isolating-Headphones-Black-Brown-Box-/121465834486?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c47ed8bf6

Mine were also listed as "blemished box" but they were perfect, no blemishes, box or otherwise. They are big and heavy, they sound great, and they are well built. They originally retailed for $329 and at the price point listed, it would be hard to go wrong.
TasDom
I bought these for my mom the Christmas before last. They sound great and are very comfortable. Was also able to get them in her favorite color. They were on sale for 70.00 when I bought them. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BYRGKE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=
joessportster
Just got the boys the fostex TX-1 at 15.00 a pair and I can tell you they sound pretty darn good for 15.00, They are usually around 30.00 and still a great deal for that price They have a hump in the bass as most lower end phones do (seems like a fad for today) they play well off portables as well as desktop, no inline controls but those are problematic quite often (seen countless threads complaining about not working etc...) I also look at the inline controls as an added link in the chain that none of us would do in our systems There was also a 30.00 phone that got revues all over as being superb it was from mono price or media bridge (cant recall which) They raved about the value and statements like best in the under 100 range (I have not tried it I use Heavy HiFiMan He500, and have no desire to switch currently) Not bashing anyone or anything but be forwarned check the reviews b-4 buying, I love Klipsch speakers but I see a lot of QC complaints in regards to there headphones / earphones Good Luck, Hope you make MoM Happy

huanfong
Just received my pair of Klipsch X11. It is extremely comfortable and sounds really great. You can take a look at my little review at the link below. http://www.shoppernistic.com/?cat=9 The price is also very attractive for such a great earphone. It definitely feels a lot more comfortable than my Sennheiser IE80. I am sure your Mom will love it...... Cheers
