USNRET
We have been promising a snow trip in 3rd week of March 2016 and our reach is about 12 hrs from Corpus so it looks like New Mexico. I am the only one in the family who has ever skied and that was as a much younger man. I am looking for a child (11-14 y.o.) friendly place to stay for a few (maybe 3) days to let the kiddos romp, run and play. I think I would need to make reservations sooner rather than later but then I would want to make sure that there is indeed snow.Room for 4 @ max of $200 per night (less is better of course)Input from you guys? TasDom
Lots of great places here in NM Mike, all depending on how far you want to travel. Coming from Texas, i would recommend Ski Apache near Ruidoso, NM Inn of the Mountain Gods is great but it is a casino as well as a nice hotel / lodge so not sure on teen activities there. Plenty of other facilities around Ruidoso to choose from. http://www.discoverruidoso.com/
TasDom
Forgot to mention there are a lot of cabin rentals in that area as well.
USNRET
Thanks for the link, I see some have retired military discounts. Any thoughts on these?
TasDom
Thanks for the link, I see some have retired military discounts. Any thoughts on these? They all look pretty good but I've only stayed at the Inn of the Mountain Gods. Personally I'd shoot for a nice cabin to give the boys a better experience....prices look good.
TasDom
Click on some of the cabin links and plug in some dates and amenities. http://www.discoverruidoso.com/lodging-in-ruidoso/type:2/
Quiet_Hollow
+1 for Ruidoso. We've spent a couple nights at the Shadow Mountain cabins just up the hill a bit from the scenic main street. Staying near Cloud Croft is another option and is only 40 minutes away. The Lodge Resort and Waterfall B&B come to mind. Ski Apache is mostly intermediate to expert skiing due to the abrupt slope at the top of the mountain. The lifts are nice and fast though. A couple of green runs that are rather long (service road and bunny slope), but typically packed with beginner skiers from El Paso and Mexico on the weekends. Still worth it though, even so for just the gondola ride to the top. It's beautiful up there.
Quiet_Hollow
A quick check, looks like the Waterfall Lodge closed its doors.
USNRET
The boss dropped by the PC and was thinking more like this place for the kids to play. Will continue to look at cabins for the stay.

CECAA850
+1 for Ruidoso. We took a family vacation there when the kids were smaller. Great place and nice cabins all around. The trip to the top of the ski mountain is a little hairy but otherwise it's a wonderful place to take your clan.

juniper
With the new modern skis its very easy to ski, I taught my wife and 7yr each in less than 30 minutes each, skiing backwards, having them hold my extended poles and I would push them back and forth teaching them how to turn. With 3 ski outings later my son was going down black diamonds.... Parabolic skis are very easy to use.
J M O N
You can also take them to White Sands and tell them the sand is "desert snow" and the reason it's not cold. Don't forget about the Klipsch museum in Las Cruces.
