And I would add, a bit easier to read compared to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, which my mother gave to me in the '60s. I kept falling asleep in school and I stayed up many nights reading into the early morning. To add to that bit of info, in 2005 I met a woman whose mother was English (father was an American), and as a teenager lived in England where her father worked. Her father passed away, but the family knew Tokien's, and afterwards, he would pick up her and her mother and take them to church.

I started a few months ago reading the Bible again using the 2 commentaries above and comparing. The "Harper Collins Study Bible" on the left is more scholarly oriented and I got for my birthday in June, while the "Jeremiah Study Bible" was given to me by a friend/student as a gift and has more of a sermon point of view. Ironically, both at the same time and not knowing about the other. I'm currently reading a fascinating American book called "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams. I like that this is a novel with humor, it is not as boring to read as I thought. Speaking of which, I was asked a week ago in college to come up with topics for narrative essays, I found https://papersowl.com/blog/narrative-essay-topics for this. But I think I’ll just write about this book and take something from it. I still have one more book, I’ll continue reading. I usually joke when I say that I read the Bible and so on. I don’t know when I’ll get through it and want to read it. Edited June 27 by stevenaughtonnsx11

I highly recommend having a Bible Parallel with the 3 Synoptic Gospels for those studying the New Testament--really eye-opening, imo. I actually found the Jewish Bible/OT fascinating because I discovered it along with learning about the Dead Sea Scrolls in the mid 1990s. The intriguing aspect of this material is how the Jewish tradition was rewriting/reinterpreting their written material in the language of the own people. What I didn't realize early on was that the NT was written in Greek. 👣 Lately, I've been following discussions about how treating this material as literature and comparing it to other Greek literature at the time shows more similarities than originally attributed. Interesting. If you're interested search for a Robyn Walsh/Dennis MacDonald video on History Valley on YouTube for an introduction. Hope all is well. Woofers and Tweeters
I love Samual's writing. Just now finished, for the second time, "Life on the Mississippi". When his autobiography was to be released, he knew that he and the people he knew would be gone, so he told it as he saw it.
jona
Just finished "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Such a captivating mix of mystery and history. Currently I'm diving into books about CS pro teams and their strategies. Full info here can give insights into their mindset and teamwork, which is just as intriguing as a good novel! But still, I'm in search of another good book to read. So, thanks for the recommendations! Edited October 27 by jona
thebes
Half way through Bernard Corwalls final novel in his Saxon series: "War Lord". If you like historical fiction Corwall is the man for you, especially his Sharpe novels mostly covering the Napoleaonic wars

Bart Ehrman and James Tabor are also EXCELLENT biblical resources on YouTube--I'm subscribed and have seen all of their videos. Also read quite a few of their books. Bart's translation of the Apostolic Fathers is on my Christmas list this year. 😊
