CECAA850
My brother is sending me his 30 year old AL crossovers to recap. What's the preferred cap to put in those? I have a few weeks to round things up. His Lascalas are bone stock.

jimjimbo
Well, if he insists on keeping those crossovers, you might as well put Dayton 1% Precision audio capacitors in them

CECAA850
I figured it would be easier for me to swap everything with like values as opposed to building him something different from scratch.
jimjimbo
They have the 30's and the 2's, but don't have 8's. Just put two 4's in parallel and you're good.
jason str
Replace the AL with a better crossover, not worth sinking any money into it.

Marvel
I would give an amount you are willing to spend and go from there. My '89 LS had AL crissovers and I didn't like them much. John Albright sent me the schematic for the DHA2 which he designed and Dean picked up the parts at P.E. and sent them to me. They sound great to me, but then again, I don't listen very loud. What does your brother listen to, how loud?
CECAA850
OK, removing the notch filters. One driver at a time. On the woofer circuit, that would be the Iron core inductor and polarized capacitor?
CECAA850
Or should I just build him AL-3's from scratch?

CECAA850
Sounds simple enough. Thank you very much. To be clear, on the mids, remove the polarized cap, the iron core inductor and the resistor?
CECAA850
Thanks for the detailed explanation. Makes perfect sense. Looking at caps, does the voltage matter? Any issue with these and these?
CECAA850
50 bucks total for all 6 isn't bad. I'll just get them all from the same place.
jimjimbo
8uf, 2.5uh and 8 ohm resistor. You do not have to physically remove them just snip the wires that include the extra notch filter components into the circuit. The notch filters are considered the bad guys of the AL crossovers. Take them out and you have an AA. When building another Klipsch crossover from scratch the autotransformers are the expensive parts. This way you do not have to buy new ones to make an AA. Autotransformers and inductors for all intents and purposes do not wear out. Save the old big motor run 8uh caps and 2uf tweeter caps. You may like the sound better with the olds ones. I disagree with some that the old ones are bad. Sometimes sure but not always. How would you measure the old big motor run caps to see if they are still good or not? Do you need an LCR meter?
