Boxoffice Buff
What is an appropriate db level for a 5.1 ch HT system? My room is 19' (L) x 16' (W) x 7' (H). I used Yamaha's YPAO to set the volume but find it too loud.
Moderators Youthman Posted March 13, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 13, 2017 I believe it's around 85db with peaks close to 100db. Truly a preference of how loud you enjoy movies
billybobg
I don't use a meter and I don't want to harm my hearing. I like clean conversations and loud enough during actions sequences appropriate to the on scene. I like action sequences to be at a volume that immerses me into the scene. My speakers have never been pushed to distortion, but imagine that short bursts at 110dB may be as hard as they're pushed. It all comes down to what you're comfortable with. derrickdj1
You just have to judge for yourself what is to loud. If you ears are ringing after a movie, it was to loud.
RoboKlipsch
Reference or 0 on the volume dial is massively loud for most people and too much for most in smaller rooms. I find around -15 to -20 very comfortable for most movies. Ypao has a few different versions too of i am not mistaken.

minermark
When the Neighbors are yelling over the fence or beating on the front door. Period.
Moderators Youthman Posted March 14, 2017 Moderators Share Posted March 14, 2017 With that said....tonight we had 10 of us in my HT watching Hacksaw Ridge. I had it at -5db and it sounded absolutely amazing, without being overly loud.
wvu80
I am with everybody else, down -10 to -15 from THX Reference level which my Onk AVR puts at 82 db. I like to listen to a movie and set the sound so conversation sounds "normal." I am not one of those who like sitting inside explosions and hearing gun shots that have a loud CRACK in my ears. derrickdj1
I normally watch at -5 but, my mains are around to 19 fit from the mlpl. I am most iikely use to a little louder thann most folks since tred to listen to most stuff af 0.0 db. but the speaker distance makes a big differents

holtrp
-20 to -25 is perfect for a full movie in my system. I limited my system to -0 which is pretty much demo mode. I even wear ear muffs below -10 most of the time.
