No, there is no rule.  It's just the way pro baseball is played.  If a ball hits touches anything other than the pitcher or catcher a new ball is put into play.

 

I'm also pretty sure for the WS the balls are specially numbered and each ball is tracked so if a grand slam is hit to set the all-time record ten people can't claim they have THE ball and try to sell the HR ball on Ebay.

I don't know.  I thought they tracked every ball, but after watching that MLB video maybe after a ball is hit it needs to go somewhere to get the authentication sticker.

 

I don't even know how they do the ball tracking that shows curveballs, balls, strikes, etc.  It's incredible technology.
