greg928gts
I've finally started working in the shop again this winter. I wish I could have started a couple of months ago, but I've been too busy. I thought I'd provide these links to my latest projects for those of you that like to watch what I'm doing. I've got 4 pairs of speakers in the shop right now for refinishing. A pair of Walnut Khorns, a pair of bookshelf AR4x, a pair of JBL L100, and a pair of JBL 4311. Once I get these out of the way, I'll get back to the rosewood La Scalas which are long overdue. Walnut Khorns JBL's Greg

edwinr
Great pics, Greg. Those Khorns are exactly the same finish as mine. Walnut scrubs up really well with the right amount of tlc.
dbflash
When are you going to do another pair of Rosewood Khorns and one Belle? My sister and her husband are moving to Maine (thanks for answering all of their questions) in May. They bought a house in December and they fly up again on the 28th to close. I could kill 2 birds with one stone. See the family and pick the speakers. Danny
jtkinney
Wow Greg! That's some great work. I'm inspired, now I just need to finish cleaning out the garage, and finish the closet shelving, and finish the kids play set, and .... It would be an opportunity (excuse) to buy some more tools. You can never have too many clamps!

pierceb
Oh boy, my K-horns are in just about the exact same shape, and I didn't know how to fix them without a complete re-veneer job (which they don't need). I love the grain in the walnut veneer on my k-horns and really want to keep the old veneer. I just want to spruce them up a bit and possibly re-veneer the edges. One of my problems is that one of the previous owners kids used a felt pen on the top of the speakers. Any one know how to get felt pen out of the veneer? I will be watching this closely. Thanks Greg. -PB
jvencius
I really can't think of a way to get felt pen stains out of veneer, especially if the ink penetrated the finish into the fibers of the veneer. As long as you plan on re-veneering anyway, you could try bleaching and re-staining the veneer in hopes that the stain will get less noticeable, but I don't have real high hopes for that succeeding. greg928gts
Thanks for the compliments everyone, it's what keeps me going! The AR's are done, and I've been working on the JBL's quite a bit and I'll be finishing them up this weekend. I'm waiting for more veneer for the Khorn edgebanding. I'm having trouble matching what's there, either because what Klipsch used originally was very red, or it got red over time. The walnut I got was brown and didn't match the red tone. What I may do is still use the darker walnut on ALL the edges. The contrast might look very nice. Sorry Danny, these Khorns are spoken for. I don't get too many to work on. I'm always keeping an eye out for Khorns in the New England area that are in need of TLC. I suppose I should just start making them myself. I DO have 6 La Scalas sitting in the shop right now, could I interest in you in a 6 speaker HT system done in rosewood? I'm going to be sanding all the surfaces of the Khorn pieces with a random orbit sander, not just cleaning them. Ink marker probably will come out if you sand the top. Khorns are really pretty easy to work on once you get them all torn down into separate pieces. Much easier than La Scalas! Greg

Rick ---------------- I'm still having room accoustic problems. But the actual room was declared an accoustic write off so if everything goes according to plan, a new living room/listening room should be created from scratch in the actual workshop I have. Disregarding those problems, I can now say that I do really appreciate the khorns. Especially since put in the Alk xover instead of the Type AA. I used the type A for a while with good results but found the Alk more to my liking. I still would like the khorns to be as fast as my Lamhorns but that would be a hard task. I found that for classical music, the khorns are definitively up there. They really give a proper sense of scale. For jazz, I'll wait to hear the khorns in a proper room before making a final judgement, but right now, I prefer the Lamhorns. But listening to Wheater Report "Heavy Wheater" yesterday night proved more enjoyable (if you can cope with Joe Zawinful's style that is) than with the Lamhorns. So yes I'm really happy with the khorns. They are unique. As are my Lamhorns. Problem is that both are huge speakers that cannot share the same room... That would be the perfect set up for me. Kudret: You bought quite a beautiful pair of Walnut khorns. You can be sure that Greg will do an outstanding job on these.
tkot
hey greg928s4... i see from your screen name that your into fast cars!! how about a little race for 3 of thoes lascalas??? drag race/road race/ city to city?? jay
greg928gts
Yeah Jeff, that's like posting audio porn! Stop doing that, you'll make someone . . . well, you know. Having seen Jeff's workshop, I think he's got a great idea to build a listening room there. Lot's of masonry, high ceiling, rectangle shaped room. Could be very nice. 3dzapper
Khorns on one wall, Lamhorns on the opposite wall and a swivel chair. The perfect solution. Rick
greg928gts
Jeff, you should mention what you did to your tweeters. Jay, the 928 hasn't been too fast lately. I've had it garaged for 2 years. I get a sick feeling in my stomach every time I think of it. There's really not much wrong with it, it's just that I don't really have time to do much with it, even drive it! Yet I don't want to sell it. It's a painful reality. Ha! I also can't find anyone to work on it except a Porsche dealership 100 miles from me. I lost track of what their hourly rate was some time ago, it must be over $100 an hour by now! But I'd be up for a race with my wife's car. Greg
