Best year for Klipschorn?

Is there a common consensus here among Klipsch gurus as to a period during which the best Klipschorn were produced?

What I mean is, I understand that with things manufactured over a period of years that the components and materials change. Sometimes this is to upgrade as new technologies and suppliers become available and other times less desirable changes to more economic components and materials due to market pressures.

In an effort to avoid buying a used pair and having to upgrade components, I am wondering are there certain years that the Klipschorn was at its out of the box best?

Likewise, are there certain years or components to avoid?

I would imagine that as long as the bass bin is good and sealed that

the other main factor would be the crossover. If you have older khorns

the crossover should be revamped or replaced. The difference in my BEC

rebuilt crossovers in my Belles was stunning. If you have old

crossovers Have you seen the latest Khorns? They are beautiful!

Andy (HDBRBuilder) has responded to this question before but the new forum search feature is about as useful as teets on a boar hog.

I would say that they are all good, and you can tweek them to your heart's content to meet your specific listening habits and requirements.

I think Andy said mid 70's to '80 were some of the best construction years. The '80 model will have the "AA" networks with the desireable solder terminal K-55V's. That said I would take just about any year, I have '77's and '88's and like them both.

I've heard that the 70's era is preferred. This is mainly due to the horns are 100% marine grade plywood, i.e., no MDF in them at all.

The horns also use the smaller throat opening slot (since '62). The crossovers are also well regarded.

Historically, that era can be regarded as the "golden age" of Khorns, IMO.

I remember seeing Khorns in ALOT of high-end audio stores at the time.

I can't tell you why...but I hear a lot of people like 1976. Maybe that is just because they have them, maybe there is an actual reason. I am sure the 76-ers will jump in and tell you why.

Sure enough, there's nothing quite like a 1976.

It was the red, white and blue limited edition that was all the rage, right?

Mid 70s models have a reputation because that's when the baby-boomers were starting to have enough money to buy things like Klipsch speakers. These acid, coke, tic and downer addled boomers have since gone on to become tastemakers and have made such imporatant audio advances as discovering audible differences in speaker "cables" and renaming patchcords as "interconnects".

  • 4 weeks later...

78~82, do a search if you want details, I've answered this more than twice.

Thank you for your reply, however after 3+ hours of searching, the only post of yours on the subject I see is: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/453339/ShowPost.aspx

What is the second post where you give details?

Also, I understood the alnico K-77 tweeters to be superior to the ferrite K-77-M tweeter.
